PURPOSE: This study was conducted to develop a resilience training program for nurses and test its effects. METHODS: A non-equivalent experimental group and a control group pretest-posttest study design was used with 56 participating nurses (28 nurses in the experimental group and 28 nurses in the control group). The resilience training program was provided to participants for 4 weeks from August 12 to September 4, 2013. Each session was scheduled for two hours per week. Participants completed the tools for resilience, positive affect, and perceived stress assessment. Data were analyzed using χ² test, Independent t-test, and 2*2 repeated measures multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVAs) with the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. RESULTS: Application of the resilience training program significantly helped nurses enhance their resilience and positive affect to workplace adversity, and reduce their perceived stress. There were significant positive differences for these variables in the experimental group compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that the resilience training program for nurses is effective and can be used as an intervention for a stress management guide for nurses.

PURPOSE: This study was done to compare the effects of abdominal aroma massage and meridian massage on constipation and stress in college women with functional constipation. METHODS: The participants were 38 college women, 18 were in the aroma group and 20 in the meridian group. The aroma massage was given using aroma oil which was a mixture of lemon, lavender, rosemary, and cyprus. The meridian massage was given at 9 accupoints which influence intestinal functions. The treatment was given 5 days a week for 4 weeks. A constipation severity score, weekly defecation frequency, and a stress response score were measured before and every week of 4 weeks of the experiment. RESULTS: While there was no significant difference between two groups, there was a significant difference within the groups in the constipation severity (aroma group: 1st week, meridian group: except 4th week), defecation frequency (aroma group: 3rd week, meridian group: 2nd and 3rd week), and stress (aroma group: all weeks, meridian group: except 4th week) after different duration of experiment. CONCLUSION: Based on these results, both abdominal massages relieved constipation and stress. Resorting to either types of massage will contribute to the reduction of use of stool softeners, suppositories, or enemas.

PURPOSE: Span of Control defines the scope of the managers' responsibilities to manage nursing staff. This study was done to measure span of control of front-line nurse managers (FLNMs) in Korea hospitals resulting in improvement in their work efficiency. METHODS: A sample of 203 FLNMs from five tertiary hospitals was recruited and completed the questionnaires. Data were analyzed using χ²-test, Fisher's exact test, independent t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé, and Pearson correlation coefficient. RESULTS: FLNMs had ‘narrow’ (n=8, 4.3%), ‘appropriate’ (n=161, 87.0%), and ‘wide’ (n=16, 8.6%) span of control. Span of control had significant correlations with the number of nurses (r=.63, p<.001), the number of non-nurses (r=.53, p<.001), units (r=.52, p<.001), staff (r=.83, p<.001), and programs (r=.67, p<.001). CONCLUSION: The research findings indicate that attention should be given to unit complexity, program diversity, total staff, and skills. Moreover, administrators of hospital and nursing departments need to provide systematic support in accordance with FLNMs’ wide span of control.

PURPOSE: This paper is a report of a concept analysis of 'quality of pediatric nursing care'. METHODS: Rodgers's evolutionary method of concept analysis was used. Data were collected from published literature related to quality of pediatric nursing care. RESULTS: Quality of pediatric nursing care was identified with three dimensions and seven attributes: 1) nurse's character: technical competence, interpersonal competence, 2) nurse's activities: developmentally appropriate care, attentiveness, entertainment, 3) nurse-parent interaction: nurse-parent partnership, emotional support. Antecedents of quality of pediatric nursing care were 'child and parent's expectation about pediatric nursing care', 'previous caring experience of pediatric nurses'. Consequences of quality of pediatric nursing care were 'meet child and parent's needs' and 'better health outcomes.' CONCLUSION: 'Quality of pediatric nursing care' is a core concept in pediatric nursing practice. Appropriate instruments to operationalize the concept need to be developed.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate pediatric nurse parent partnership and factors associated with this partnership. METHODS: A survey was conducted with 158 nurses working in pediatric practice at one of 7 hospitals in Seoul, Incheon, and Chungcheongbuk Province. Data were collected from September to December 2013, and analyzed with SPSS Windows 21.0. RESULTS: In hierarchial multiple regression analysis, self-efficacy (beta=.19, p=.016), clinical decision making (beta=.15, p=.046), and empowerment (beta=.29, p=.001) were associated with pediatric nurse parent partnership, after adjusting for marital status, children, education, position and satisfaction with work unit. These factors accounted for 44.0% of the variance in the pediatric nurse parent relationship. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that pediatric nurse parent partnership could be influenced by the predictors. Ultimately, intervention programs focusing on these factors should be effective in helping pediatric nurses improve partnership with parents.

PURPOSE: This study was implemented to investigate the level of awareness of osteoporosis among urban women. METHODS: A survey was conducted with a sample size of 434 adult females who resided in metropolises in Korea such as Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, Pusan, Gyeongsangnam-do, Kangwon-do, Jeju-do and Jeollanam-do. Osteoporosis Awareness Scale was consisted of five areas with total number of 31 questions. The questionnaire's scale was 1 to 4 point, 4 point being the highest understanding level. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics method. RESULTS: The average awareness level of subjects was 2.38 and significant different depending on participants' age, education level, previous encounter with any information about osteoporosis, preventive behavior of osteoporosis, bone mineral density test, fracture history, diet control experience, and regular exercise. In osteoporosis awareness level by five areas, preventive behaviors 2.76 resulted in the highest score and characteristics of osteoporosis 2.51, bone physiology 2.46, improving bone health 2.38, and risk factors 1.80 followed respectively. CONCLUSION: We should implement bone health programs from a various perspective in order to raise women's osteoporosis awareness. In addition, We need follow-up studies on whether or not the increase on awareness level actually would result in changing in their behavior.

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to develop an instrument measuring awareness of osteoporosis. METHODS: The process included construction of a conceptual framework, generation of 86 preliminary items, verification of content validity, selection of secondary items, verification of construct validity and extraction of final items. The 86 items were reviewed for content validity by two groups of experts and were tested to evaluate inter item correlation coefficient by two groups of adult women. From June to August 2007, data were collected from 383 adult women who lived in Seoul and provinces in Korea. Data were analyzed by performing item analysis, Varimax factor analysis and Cronbach's alpha. RESULTS: There were 31 items in the final instrument categorized into 5 factors. The factors were labeled as "preventive behaviors (10 items)", "risk factors (5 items)", "characteristics of osteoporosis (6 items)", "improving bone health (5 items)", and "bone physiology (5 items)". Cumulative percent of variance was 60.92% and eigen values ranged from 1.20 to 12.44. Cronbach's alpha was .948 and ranged from .804 to .917. CONCLUSION: Validity and reliability of the scale are confirmed in this study showing its utility for measuring awareness of osteoporosis for women. Utilization of the scale will also contribute to designing an appropriate prevention program for osteoporosis.

OBJECTIVE: Electronic Medical Record contains the majority of clinical data in unstructured text. The information in the textual document can be stored in conceptual format and used to support clinical care by text summarization technique. In this study, we present Information Extraction(IE) using Concept Node(CN) which is extraction rule in case frame from brain radiology reports in SNUH(Seoul National University Hospital) for summarization. METHOD: Following steps are performed: design conceptual model to define semantic entities as extraction templates of brain radiology report, build CN dictionary based on statistical syntactic pattern and development of parser to extract relevant information based on defined templates. RESULTS: The three evaluation results shows that 19% precision improvement after post processing supplemental specified complex verb construction and 19.24~21.25% accurate semantic effectiveness with extracting additional Korean noun. The average of precision is 85.18%, average of recall is 93.71% and F-measure is 0.89. CONCLUSION: Our approach has advantageous elements for different language at the same sentence. We expect this IE technology can summarize vast amount radiology texts material for clinical decision support system effectively and hope this study helps the evolution of clinical data representation in Korean medical records and its integration into the EMR in the future.

Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the content and effectiveness of psychosocial support interventions for women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Methods: The following databases were searched with no limitation of the time period: Ovid-MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Ovid-Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, NDSL, KoreaMed, RISS, and KISS. Two investigators independently reviewed and selected articles according to the predefined inclusion/exclusion criteria. ROB 2.0 and the RoBANS 2.0 checklist were used to evaluate study quality. Results: Based on the 14 selected studies, psychosocial support interventions were provided for the purpose of (1) informational support (including GDM and diabetes mellitus information; how to manage diet, exercise, stress, blood glucose, and weight; postpartum management; and prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus); (2) self-management motivation (setting goals for diet and exercise management, glucose monitoring, and enhancing positive health behaviors); (3) relaxation (practicing breathing and/or meditation); and (4) emotional support (sharing opinions and support). Psychosocial supportive interventions to women with GDM lead to behavioral change, mostly in the form of self-care behavior; they also reduce depression, anxiety and stress, and have an impact on improving self-efficacy. These interventions contribute to lowering physiological parameters such as fasting plasma glucose, glycated hemoglobin, and 2-hour postprandial glucose levels. Conclusion Psychosocial supportive interventions can indeed positively affect self-care behaviors, lifestyle changes, and physiological parameters in women with GDM. Nurses can play a pivotal role in integrative management and can streamline the care for women with GDM during pregnancy and following birth, especially through psychosocial support interventions.

Background: The development process of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) must adhere to development standards and must be supported and steered by a representative and consistent governing body. We aimed to investigate the current status of the most recent CPGs published in Korea through surveys of medical professional societies and literature searches. Methods: We collected CPGs developed in Korea in the past 5 years through several electronic database searches (MEDLINE, Embase, and KoreaMed), hand searches, and surveys of medical society memberships from the Korean Academy Medical Societies. Three authors selected Korean CPGs according to our inclusion/exclusion criteria and extracted data from selected CPGs about general characteristics, characteristics of CPGs for setup, evidence evaluation, and the finalization phase. Results: Out of 2,337 articles searched from various sources and 66 documents collected by survey, 129 guidelines (122 by database searching and 7 by survey) were selected. During the recent 5 years, the yearly numbers of CPGs developed were around 25. A single organization was the most frequent CPG development body (42, 32.6%). The most common development methodologies described in the CPGs included were de novo (53, 41.1%) followed by adaptation (48, 37.2%) and hybrid (4, 3.1%). Systematic literature searching was performed in most of the guidelines (79.8%). The evidence level was reported in 104 guidelines (80.6%).There were 77 guidelines (59.7%) that reported an update plan. Fifty guidelines were published in Korean (41.0%), and 46 guidelines were published in English only (37.7%). Conclusion Among CPGs developed in Korea in the last 5 years, the proportion adhering to CPG development standards has increased, but there is still room for improvement.
