1.The clinicopathological relevance of Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) expression in epithelial ovarian cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinicopathological implication of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) expression in epithelial ovarian cancer. METHODS: Retrospectively, slide samples (n=72) were analyzed. PARP expression was analyzed using immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS: Of 72 cases, positive PARP expression were 27 cases (37.5%). PARP expression showed negative correlation with FIGO stage (p=0.004) and mitotic count (p=0.010), but showed no correlation with grade (p=0.053), tumor size (p=0.301), Ki-67 LIs (p=0.986), p53 positivity (p=0.414), and bcl-2 positivity (p=0.413). CONCLUSION: PARP expression showed negative correlation with advanced stage and mitoses in epithelial ovarian cancer. Therefore PARP expression could be a new prognostic factor in epithelial ovarian cancer.

2.The Diagnostic Significance of AgNORs and MIB-1 Labelling Index in Atypical Meningioma.

There is no definite histological criteria which can predict the biologic behavior of meningiomas, although resectability is the most important factor in terms of recurrence. For grading meningiomas, various factors have been studied, such as hypercellularity, nuclear pleomorphism, small cells with high N/C ratio, prominent nucleoli (PN), frequent mitosis, loss of architecture, focal necrosis (FN). We investigated 116 meningiomas to evaluate the correlation between the factors and the proliferative activity using AgNORs and MIB-1 labelling index (LI). They were divided into 3 groups: Group A includes meningiomas with none of the factors; group B with one of the factors; group C with two or more factors. MIB-1 LI was correlated with each factor, but AgNORs was not. There was a statistical difference among group A (<1.28%), B (2.7%) and C (5.1%) (p<0.05) using MIB-1 LI. FN was the most frequently associated with other factors, and it had the highest MIB-1 LI (6.31%). MIB-1 LI of group B was 5.1 2.3%. In group B, the most frequent combination was FN and PN, and it showed the highest MIB-1 LI (5.74%). This study indicates that FN and PN are important for diagnosis of atypical meningioma, and MIB-1 LI appears to be a useful method for estimating the proliferative activity of meningiomas, and 5% or more of MIB-1 LI could help in making a diagnosis of atypical meningioma.

4.A Case of Malignant Leydig Cell Tumor.

Malignant Leydig cell tumor of the testis is a very rare condition. A case of the malignant Leydig cell tumor arised from the right testis of seventy-year-old man is reported. The patient presented painless, 4 x 8 x 5 cm sized, mass without endocrinological manifestations and the mass was removed and diagnosed as a malignant Leydig cell tumor histologically showing frequent mitosis, pleomorphic cells in trabecular pattern with nuclear atypia, clear cells with foamy cytoplasm, and vascular invasion of tumor emboli in tumor capsule. No Reinke`s crystalloid was seen. The patient is now being followed in disease free state.

This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of UVB radiation on epidermal melanoctes of C57BIL mouse, The results are summarized as follows : l) The numerical increase of DOPA positive melanocytes following UVB irradiation was due to both of active mitosis of epidermal melanocytes and the conversion of dormant. malanocytes to DOPA-positive melsnocytes. 2) Long term effects of UVB irradiatinn on the epidermal melanocytes suggest the persistent activation of typrosinase in UVB irradiated melanocytes.

6.The Effect of Ultraviolet Irradiation on the Morphological Changes in Epidermal Keratinocytes.

A total of 40 adult black-mice was used and divided into two groups for expeiment. Group A was irradiated by UVB only and Group B had SPF 15 sunscreen a.pplied to the back followed by irradiation by UVB. Each group was divided again into 5 subgroups according to the days of UVB irradiation frcm 2 to 10 days. A Waldmann combination UVA+UVB Radiation Treatment Cabin 8001 was used as the light source and the UVB dosage was 50 mJ/cm2 daily. Skin specimens were taken 24 hours after the last irradiation. Histologic changes in epidermis were reviewed by the light microscope. In group A, the characteristic sunburn cells(SBC) were observed with 100 mJ/ cm2. SBC number was maximum with 400 mJ/cm2. The other epidermal changes were parakerat.osis, crusts, atypical cells, and mitoses of basal cells, which showed graded responses to the UVB doses. Pretreatment with the sunscreen completely prevented these changes.

Leiomyosarcoma of the duodenum is an uncommon tumor and have not specific symptoms and signs, almost all cases of tumor were diagnosed in operating room. This tumor is generally firm, relatively well encapsulated, lobulated and often soft if they undergo hemorrhagic necrosis. Most authors emphasized the relative number of mitosis as the most reliable findings of leiomyosarcoma. Recently, we experienced a case of leiomyosarcoma of duodenum which was confirmed by operative and pathological diagnosis.

8.A Case of Mosaic Tetrapaloidy.

Tetraploidy of human chromosome(92, XXYY) has been described very rarely. Liveborn infant with tetraploidy was reported in only 17 cases(complete 7 cases, mosaicism 10 cases) in the world, and no cases have been reported in Korea. The diploid-tetraploid mosaicism could arise during the early mitosis of the zygote. In one blastomeric cell, the chromosomes replicate but the cytoplasrn does not divide. We report a case of live infant with mosaic tetraploidy detected in lymphocyte(30%) and amniotic cell culture(25%), who presented with multiple congenital anomalies. A brief review of the literature is included.

9.Investigation on the inhibitory effect of the mitosis from the extract of some species of Crinum on the bulb of Allium ascalonicum L

The methanolic and water extracts of leaves, bulbs and roots from 5 species (C.sp1, C. sp2) were subjected to Allium antimititic test, of those methanolic extracts showed strong activity, especially the leaves extracts of C. latifolium, C.sp1, C.sp2. Total alkaloid of all samples exhibited a strongest activity. Furthermore, the water, methalonic extract and total alkaloids had clearly an inhibitory activity on the elongation of Allium roots.

10.A Case of Cellular Schwannoma.

Cellular schwannoma, a variant of schwannoma, is a rare, benign, nerve sheath tumor which presents as a slowly-growing tumor in the paravertebral region of the mediastinum and retroperitoneum in middle-aged adults. Cutaneous involvement is very rare. Histopathologically, the tumor is characterized by the presence of compact spindle cells arranged into fascicles, variable nuclear hyperchromasia and pleomorphism, lack of Verocay bodies and typical predominence of Antoni A areas. There may also be occasional increased mitoses and foci of necrosis. We report a case of cellular schwannoma involving subcutaneous tissue, which is a very rare location.
