Endotracheal intubation sometimes leads to complications, particularly in patients with anticipated difficult intubation. The GlideScope is preferred because of its high success rate in cases with anticipated difficult intubation. However, complications during the process have been reported. Most minor injuries can be treated after early detection. However, treatment can be difficult if complications occur later. We report a patient who underwent an emergency tracheostomy due to a delayed airway obstruction caused by pharyngeal wall bleeding during intubation with a GlideScope.

Journal of Korean Neuropsychiatric Association 2007;46(5):507-511
OBJECTIVES: Clinical utility of the Short Form of the Samsung Dementia Questionnaire (S-SDQ) as a screening instrument for Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). METHODS: Three groups (n=27, Subjective Memory Impairment (SMI); n=41 MCI; n=79, Early Alzheimer's Disease(AD)) recruited from memory clinic were administered a battery of neuropsychological tests including S-SDQ and Korean version-Mini Mental State Examination (K-MMSE). RESULTS: S-SDQ, unlike the K-MMSE, had no association with the age and education of the subjects. Scores of S-SDQ was found to correlate (r=-.496) with scores of K-MMSE. Result of Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis revealed that S-SDQ discriminated between the SMI and the MCI groups. CONCLUSION: S-SDQ may be a solution to the problem of contamination by education and age which affect traditional cognitive screening instruments like K-MMSE, and it may be a useful tool for screening MCI.

Keimyung Medical Journal 2014;33(2):126-131
Fibrous dysplasia is a benign, bony abnormality that is usually asymptomatic. A 41-year-old male with minimal symptoms presented at this hospital with abnormal findings incidentally seen in his ribs on the chest radiograph. A skeletal survey showed numerous, osteolytic lesions throughout multiple bones. Diagnostic processes for malignancy of undefined primary origin (MUO) were performed in order to identify the underlying primary neoplasm, although abnormal findings were not seen except for multiple bone lesions. A computed tomography guided bone biopsy was performed on his left rib. The final diagnosis was fibrous dysplasia. This case demonstrates that fibrous dysplasia should be considered in the differential diagnosis in young patients with multiple, osteolytic lesions and without a prior history suggesting malignancy.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the efficacy and safety of memantine-an uncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist-in the treatment of moderate-to-severe dementia. METHODS: Forty-four patients with moderate-to-severe dementia received 20 mg of memantine daily for 24 weeks. The primary efficacy variable was measured by the Korean version of Severe Impairment Battery(K-SIB), and the secondary efficacy variables were measured using the Seoul-Activites of Daily Living(S-ADL) and Neuropsychiatric Inventory-Questionnaire(NPI-Q). Neuropsychological assessments were administrated at baseline, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks. Safety parameters were monitored. RESULTS: Of 44 patients recruited, 30 completed the study and 14 dropped out. Memantine-treated patients showed a therapeutic benefit in all efficacy variables ; the K-SIB, S-ADL, and NPI-Q total scores were not significantly different from baseline either at the endpoint(in the analysis of intention-to-treat, with the last observation carried forward, ITT-LOCF) or at week 24(in the analysis of observed cases, OC). The response rates, when "response" was defined as improved or unchanged in the K-SIB or the S-ADL scores, were 43.3 and 50%, respectively(in the analysis of OC). The responders showed significant improvement in the cognitive subdomain of memory function, praxis, visuospatial ability, and orienting to name. Memantine was shown to be tolerable and safe. CONCLUSIONS: Memantine treatment reduced or delayed clinical deterioration in cognition, function, and behavior in patients with moderate-to-severe dementia.

The Ewha Medical Journal 2022;45(4):e18-
In response to the changes in the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic situation, Ewha Womans University established Ewha Safe Campus (ESC), an on-campus infection outbreak management system, to allow students and faculty members to safely resume face-to face classes in 2022. The COVID-19 testing station, Ewha Safe Station, is the core element of ESC. Symptomatic students and faculty members perform a combo swab self-PCR test or receive a nasopharyngeal swab PCR test from experts to prevent the spread of COVID-19 through early detection and management. ESC is significant in that it detects infection risks and proactively implements preemptive measures in a university. The COVID-19 health response system model at the university level was applied for the first time in South Korea, reaching a milestone in the history of university health in South Korea. In particular, it is highly valuable that the test was free of charge, as it enabled all of the examinees to have easy access to the test through joint cooperation with the Seegene Medical Foundation. This is a successful example of cooperation between schools and private institutions for public health improvement. In the future, the direct and indirect effects of the establishment and implementation of ESC need to be evaluated and confirmed, and areas requiring improvements need to be identified in preparation for another infectious disease outbreak in the future.

Objectives:
Ewha Womans University launched an on-campus Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) response system called Ewha Safety Campus (ESC) Project in collaboration with the Seegene Inc. RTPCR diagnostic tests for COVID-19 were proactively provided to the participants. This study examines the effectiveness of the on-campus testing strategy in controlling the reproduction number (Rt ) and identifying student groups vulnerable to infection.
Methods:
The ESC project was launched on March 2, 2022, with a pilot period from Feb 22 to March 1, 2022—the peak of the Omicron variant wave. We collected daily data on the RT-PCR test results of the students of Ewha Womans University from Mar 2 to Apr 30, 2022. We daily calculated Rt and compared it with that of the general population of Korea (women, people aged 20–29 years, and Seoul residents). We also examined the students vulnerable to the infection based on the group-specific Rt and positivity rate.
Results:
A lower Rt was observed about 2 weeks after the implementation of the ESC Project than that of the general population. The lower Rt persisted during the entire study period. Dormitory residents had a higher Rt . The positivity rate was higher in students who did not comply with quarantine guidelines and did not receive the second dose of the vaccine.
Conclusion
The study provides scientific evidence for the effectiveness of the on-campus testing strategy and different infection vulnerabilities of students, depending on dormitory residence, compliance with the quarantine guidelines, and vaccination.

PURPOSE: We investigated the effect of location changes in the inferior border of the belly board (BB) aperture by adding a bladder compression device (BCD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We respectively reviewed data from 10 rectal cancer patients with a median age 64 years (range, 45~75) and who underwent computed tomography (CT) simulation with the use of BB to receive pelvic radiotherapy between May and September 2010. A CT simulation was again performed with the addition of BCD since small bowel (SB) within the irradiated volume limited boost irradiation of 5.4 Gy using the cone down technique after 45 Gy. The addition of BCD made the inferior border of BB move from symphysis pubis to the lumbosacral junction (LSJ). RESULTS: Following the addition of BCD, the irradiated volumes of SB and the abdominopelvic cavity (APC) significantly decreased (174.3+/-89.5 mL vs. 373.3+/-145.0 mL, p=0.001, 1282.6+/-218.7 mL vs. 1571.9+/-158 mL, p<0.001, respectively). Bladder volume within the treated volume increased with BCD (222.9+/-117.9 mL vs. 153.7+/-95.5 mL, p<0.001). The ratio of irradiated bladder volume to APC volume with BCD (33.5+/-14.7%) increased considerably compared to patients without a BCD (27.5+/-13.1%) (p<0.001), and the ratio of irradiated SB to APC volume decreased significantly with BCD (13.9+/-7.6% vs. 24.2+/-10.2%, p<0.001). The ratios of the irradiated SB volumeand irradiated bladder volume to APC volume negatively correlated (p=0.001). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that the addition of BCD, which made the inferior border of BB move up to the LSJ, increased the ratio of the bladder to APC volume and as a result, decreased the irradiated volume of SB.
