1.Food Habits and Serum Lipid Concentratons during the Periods of Training and Detraining in Volleyball Players.

This study was done to investigate the 12 college volleyball player's food behavior, nutrient intakes, and their serum lipid levels during the periods of training and detraining and to provide basic data for an effective progrm for the volleyball players during the period fo detraining after the game season. The results were summarized as follows : The total daily energy intake of the players was 3,363+/-339kcal and3,692+/-499kcal during the periods of the training and detraining, respectively. During the training period, daily intakes of protein, calcium and vitamin A, and B2 were lower than the recommended dietary allowance for the players. During the detraining period, the players' daily intakes of calcium, iron, and vitamin A were even lower. However, the consumption of alcohol was dramatically increased during the period of detraining. The levels of serum triglyceride and very low density lipoprotein were significantly increased during the detraining period. Basal metabolic rates were significantly increased after the training period and diastolic pressure was decreased during the detraining period. In conclusion, out results suggest that the detraining of volleyball players for 10 days after intensive training, negatively affects their food behavior and serum lipid concentrations. Therefore, for the improvement of performance for the next game season, a planned program for the players' detraining period should be developed.

2.Comparison of antioxidant activity and prevention of lymphocyte DNA damage by fruit and vegetable juices marketed in Korea.

PURPOSE: Fruit and vegetable juices are known to be rich sources of antioxidants, which have beneficial effects on diseases caused by oxidative stress. The purpose of this study was to directly compare the antioxidant activities of fruit and vegetable juices marketed in Korea. METHODS: We analyzed four fruit juices, two vegetable juices, two yellow-green juices, and six mixed vegetable juices. Antioxidant activities were analyzed using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) test, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonate) (ABTS) test, and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay. Protective effects against DNA damage were determined using an ex vivo comet assay with human lymphocytes. RESULTS: DPPH radical scavenging activities were in the following order: blueberry juice > mixed vegetable C juice > kale juice > mixed vegetable P juice > grape juice. ABTS radical scavenging activities were in the following order: blueberry juice > mixed vegetable C juice > grape juice > mixed vegetable P juice > kale juice. Peroxyl radical scavenging activities as assessed by ORAC assay were in the following order: blueberry juice > kale juice > mixed vegetable C juice > grape juice. Grape or blueberry juice showed strong abilities to prevent DNA damage in lymphocytes, and the difference between them was not significant according to the GSTM1/GSTT1 genotype. CONCLUSION: Antioxidant activities of fruit and vegetable juices and ex vivo DNA protective activity increased in the order of blueberry juice, grape juice, and kale juice, although the rankings were slightly different. Therefore, these juices rich in polyphenols and flavonoids deserve more attention for their high antioxidant capacity.

3.Analysis of Neonatal Surgery during a 5-year Period.

PURPOSE: In the field of pediatric surgery, neonatal surgery occupies a special portion and has clinical varieties. Recently many associated physicians, such as pediatric surgeons, neonatologists, anesthetists, pathologists and radiologists, work collaboratively for care. This study was designed to identify characteristics of neonatal surgery based on clinical experiences in a single institute. METHODS: Neonates receiving operation during a 5-year period between Jan. 2003 and Dec. 2007 in Pusan National University Children's Hospital were reviewed. Patients were divided into 2 groups of age after birth; early neonatal (before 7 days) and late neonatal period (after 7 days) and the operation was classified as a primary procedure for definite treatment and a staged procedure including 2nd look operation. We analyzed their clinical data and postoperative results. RESULTS: 286 cases of neonates were included during this period, 118 cases (41.3%) in early neonatal and 168 (58.7%) in late neonatal period. Distribution of diseases was as follows, sequentially; 60 (21.0%) anorectal malformations, 46 (16.1%) intestinal atresia, 44 (15.4%) Hirschsprung's disease, 35 (12.2%) necrotizing enterocolitis, 24 (8.3%) hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, 20 (6.9%) inguinal hernia, 13 (4.5%) malrotation, 9 (3.1%) tumor, 8 (2.7%) diaphragmatic hernia, 6 (2.0%) abdominal wall defect and 21 (7.3%) others. According to the operation, a primary procedure was performed in 205 cases (71.7%) and a staged procedure in 81 cases (28.3%). The morbidity and mortality was 3.1% and 2.8% respectively. CONCLUSION: When considering morbidity and mortality after neonatal surgery for patients who have associated anomalies, collaborative care is necessary to expect a good outcome.

4.Computer-Aided Diagnosis of Thyroid Nodules via Ultrasonography: Initial Clinical Experience.

OBJECTIVE: To prospectively evaluate the diagnostic performance of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) for detection of thyroid cancers via ultrasonography (US). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 50 consecutive patients with 117 thyroid nodules on US during the period between June 2016 and July 2016. A radiologist performed US examinations using real-time CAD integrated into a US scanner. We compared the diagnostic performance of radiologist, the CAD system, and the CAD-assisted radiologist for the detection of thyroid cancers. RESULTS: The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and accuracy of the CAD system were 80.0, 88.1, 83.3, 85.5, and 84.6%, respectively, and were not significantly different from those of the radiologist (p > 0.05). The CAD-assisted radiologist showed improved diagnostic sensitivity compared with the radiologist alone (92.0% vs. 84.0%, p = 0.037), while the specificity and PPV were reduced (85.1% vs. 95.5%, p = 0.005 and 82.1% vs. 93.3%, p = 0.008). The radiologist assisted by the CAD system exhibited better diagnostic sensitivity and NPV than the CAD system alone (92.0% vs. 80.0%, p = 0.009 and 93.4% vs. 88.9%, p = 0.013), while the specificities and PPVs were not significantly different (88.1% vs. 85.1%, p = 0.151 and 83.3% vs. 82.1%, p = 0.613, respectively). CONCLUSION: The CAD system may be an adjunct to radiological intervention in the diagnosis of thyroid cancer.

5.Nutrients and Salt Consumption of Hypertension Patients According to Treatment Status.

High blood pressure is an important determinant of the incidence of coronary heart disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, renal failure, and peripheral vascular disease. Recommendations for control of high blood pressure emphasize lifestyle modification, including weight control, reduced sodium intake, increased physical activity. Subjects who were normotensive (n = 19, 47.2 +/- 9.0 y, BP 116/81 mmHg), treatment hypertensive (n = 33, 54.2 +/- 6.9 y, BP 132/85 mmHg) and non-treatment hypertensive (n = 14, 50.1 +/- 11.0 y, 149/94 mmHg) recruited. Anthropometric assessment (height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, fat %, fat mass, and lean body mass) and dietary assessments (using 3-days food records, daily nutrient intakes were analysed by CAN PRO 2.0 were carried out. Blood and 24-hour urine were collected). Test of recognition for salt taste threshold were performed. In non-treatment hypertensive male subjects, weight, %IBW, BMI, and waist circumference were significantly higher than those of normotensive and treatment hypertensive subjects (p < 0.05). Food habits were not significantly different among the three groups. Intakes of vitamin A, vitamin B1, and vitamin B2 were significantly higher in normotensive group (p < 0.05). Intakes of sodium and salt taste recognition threshold were the highest in normotensive group and the lowest in treatment hypertensive group (p < 0.05). Blood levels of lipids and minerals were not significantly different among the three groups. Urinary calcium level of normotensive group were significantly higher than that of treatment hypertensive and non-treatment hypertensive groups (p < 0.05). These results indicate that continuous management of hypertension by drug and non-drug treatment affects salt taste recognition threshold and reduced the consumption of sodium. However, dietary sodium intake exceed recommended sodium intake to prevent and treat hypertension. It is necessary to develop the lifestyle modification program that may have beneficial effects on hypertension treatment.

6.Clinical features of adolescents who visited the emergency department with chest discomfort: the importance of recognizing underlying medical conditions

Purpose:
We aimed to evaluate the clinical features of adolescents who visit emergency departments (EDs) with chest discomfort, and analyze the implications of underlying medical conditions for the development of cardiogenic chest discomfort.
Methods:
We reviewed the medical records of adolescents (13-18 years) with chest discomfort who visited a tertiary hospital ED in Seoul, Korea from 2014 through 2018. Sex, age, duration and character of the discomfort, symptoms and signs, ED length of stay, abnormal findings of vital signs, chest radiograph, electrocardiogram, and elevated concentrations of cardiac enzymes were reviewed. Final diagnosis was based on cardiac evaluations within 1 year after the index visit. Underlying medical conditions were defined as visits to the cardiology, pulmonology or hematology-oncology clinics at least twice in the preceding year. Initial suspicious clinical findings were defined as palpitation, syncope or high blood pressure. Logistic regression was used to identify predictors for cardiac etiology.
Results:
Of the 231 patients, 43 (18.6%) and 69 (29.9%) had underlying medical conditions and initial suspicious clinical findings, respectively. The predictors for cardiac etiology were underlying medical conditions (odds ratio, 4.28; 95% confidence interval, 1.09-16.73), initial suspicious clinical findings (4.77; 1.36-16.77), abnormal electrocardiogram (11.54; 3.22-41.32), and elevated concentration of troponin I (66.52; 5.37-823.55). The patients with cardiogenic chest discomfort had a longer median ED length of stay (281.0 minutes [interquartile range, 215.5-369.0] vs. 199.5 [132.8-298.0]; P = 0.004) and a higher hospitalization rate (48.3% vs. 13.4%; P < 0.001) than those with non-cardiogenic chest discomfort.
Conclusion
It may be necessary to recognize underlying medical conditions and initial suspicious clinical findings in EDs prior to cardiac evaluation in adolescents with chest discomfort.
7.Full-arch accuracy of five intraoral scanners:In vivo analysis of trueness and precision

Objective:
To evaluate the trueness and precision of full-arch scans acquired using five intraoral scanners and investigate the factors associated with the dimensional accuracy of the intraoral scan data.
Methods:
Nine adult participants (mean age, 34.3 ± 8.3 years) were recruited. Four zirconium spheres (Ø 6 mm) were bonded to the canines and the molars. Following acquisition of reference scans using an industrial-grade scanner, five intraoral scanners, namely i500, CS3600, Trios 3, iTero, and CEREC Omnicam, were used to scan the arches. Linear distances between the four reference spheres were automatically calculated, and linear mixed model analysis was performed to compare the trueness and precision of the intraoral scan data among the different scanners.
Results:
The absolute mean trueness and precision values for all intraoral scanners were 76.6 ± 79.3 and 56.6 ± 52.4 µm, respectively. The type of scanner and the measured linear distances had significant effects on the accuracy of the intraoral scan data. With regard to trueness, errors in the intermolar dimension and the distance from the canine to the contralateral molar were greater with Omnicam than with the other scanners. With regard to precision, the error in the linear distance from the canine to the molar in the same quadrant was greater with Omnicam and CS3600 than with the other scanners.
Conclusions
The dimensional accuracy of intraoral scan data may differ significantly according to the type of scanner, with the amount of error in terms of trueness being clinically significant.

Heterotrimeric GTP-binding proteins (G proteins) transduce extracellular signals into intracellular signals by activating effector molecules including adenylate cyclases that catalyze cAMP formation, and thus regulate various cellular responses such as metabolism, proliferation, and apoptosis. cAMP signaling pathways have been reported to protect cells from ionizing radiation-induced apoptosis, but however, the protective mechanism is not clear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the signaling molecules and the mechanism mediating the anti-apoptotic action of cAMP signaling system in radiation-induced apoptosis. Stable expression of a constitutively active mutant of G alpha s (G alpha sQL) protected gamma ray-induced apoptosis which was assessed by analysis of the cleavages of PARP, caspase-9, and caspase-3 and cytochrome C release in SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells. G alpha sQL repressed the gamma ray-induced down-regulation of Bcl-xL protein, but transfection of Bcl-xL siRNA increased the gamma ray-induced apoptosis and abolished the anti-apoptotic effect of G alpha sQL. G alpha sQL decreased the degradation rate of Bcl-xL protein, and it also restrained the decrease in Bcl-xL mRNA by increasing the stability following ionizing irradiation. Furthermore, prostaglandin E2 that activates G alpha s was found to protect gamma ray-induced apoptosis, and the protective effect was abolished by treatment with prostanoid receptor antagonist specific to EP2/4R subtype. Moreover, specific agonists for adenosine A1 receptor that inhibits cAMP signaling pathway augmented gamma ray-induced apoptosis. From this study, it is concluded that Galphas-cAMP signaling system can protect SH-SY5Y cells from gamma ray-induced apoptosis partly by restraining down-regulation of Bcl-xL expression, suggesting that radiation-induced apoptosis can be modulated by GPCR ligands to improve the efficiency of radiation therapy.
