Objectives To study the relationship between hope and quality of life(QOL)in nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC) patients undergoing radiotherapy(RT). Methods One hundred and ten NPC patients undergoing radiotherapy participated in the investigation by the Herth Hope Index(HHI)and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-head and neck scale(FACT-H&N),to look into the correlations between their hope and QOL.Result The scores on hope and NPC for the QOL patients during radiotherapy were(34.80±2.64)and(91.34±13.19),respectively and they were positively correlated(r=0.253,P<0.01). Conclusions The hope of the NPC patients is at the medium level.Their hope is positively correlated with QOL.The higher level the hope is,the higher the QOL.

A postulated suppression of T lymphocyte function by clonidine (an adrenogic receptor agonist) was explored by utilizing mitogen induced lymphocyte transformation of mouse spleen cells in vitro. Added at the onset of the culture or 24h later, clonidine (10-(?)-10-8 M ) did not suppress T lymphocyte transformation induced by ConA or PHA. It implies that there is a difference in the sensitivity for clonidine between T and B lymphocyte, as clonidine has been suggested to suppress the SRBC induced primary immune response of mouse spleen cells in a dose dependent manner.

Objective To evaluate the influence of pressing technique on the malposition of catheter dur- ing the operation of peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC). Methods Totally, 169 patients with lung cancer were randomly divided into treatment group (n = 88), in which the external and internal jugular veins were pressed at the supraclavicular fossa by the assistant when the catheter was navigated in 25 cm, and control group (n = 81), in which the patients were called to turn their angle of mandible to supraclavicular fossa when the cathe- ter was sent in. Results There were only one patient whose catheter was sent in external jugular vein in treatment group and nine patients whose catheters were sent in external and internal jugular vein in control group. The inci- dence of malposition of catheter was significantly different between two groups (1.1% vs. 11. 1% , X2 =7. 3636, P < 0. 01). Conclusion The pressing technique can reduce the incidence of malposition of catheter into external and internal jugular vein during the operation of PICC.

AIM: To observe the supplementation action of the crude and processed Epimedium Sapittatum Maxim. METHODS: The effects of different extracts of Epimedium Sagittatum Maxim. on the castrated mice were observed. RESULTS: The aqueous and alcohol extracts of the crude and processed Epimedium Sagittatum maxim. showed same marked inhibition on atrophy of castrated mice. CONCLUSION: The crude and processed Epimedium Sagittatum maxim. both have the supplementation action and show no marked difference in action.

Chinese Pharmacological Bulletin 1986;0(06):-
Mechanism of Immunomodulatory actions of total glucosides of paeony ( TGP ) was studied by McAb indirect immunofluorescence. TGP 5 mg/( kg?d ) ip for 8d suppressed DTH, that was enhanced by cyclophosphamide( Cy), and decreased L3T4+/Lyt-2+ 〔 (Th/i)/(Ts /c) 〕 cell ratio in ICR mice .TGP 5 mg/ ( kg?d ) ip for 5d enhanced DTH that was suppressed by Cy, and increased the L3T4+/Lyt-2 + cell ratio in ICR mice. The same dose of TGP ip for 5d promoted the hemolysin production of spleen cells, that was suppressed by Cy, increased the L3T4+/Lyt-2 + cell ratio in BLAB/c mice. The results suggest that immunomodulatory actions of TGP might be brought about by altering Th/Ts cell ratio.

Objective To investigate the cognition of the monitoring and management of blood glucose critical values among clinical nurses. Method Totally 112 clinical nurses from 28 departments of the hospital were involved in the investigation with a self-designed questionnaire. Results The average score on monitoring and management of blood glucose critical values was (79.69 ± 14.12). 53 nurses (47.32%) were at a medium or lower level. There were significant differences in the scores among the nurses of different age, work experience, education level and professional title (P<0.05). Conclusions The clinical nurses have inadequate knowledge about the monitoring and management of blood glucose critical values. The hospital administration should carry out various training methods for nurses to improve their ability in nursing diabetic patients.

Objective To investigate the influence of peer education on maintenance knowledge of patients with peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) outside the hospital. Methods 74 patients with PICC were divided into the intervention group and the control group with 37 patients in each group according to the random digit table, the intervention group received peer education and the conventional health education, while the control group only received routine health education. The maintenance knowledge of PICC was investigated with questionnaires and the results were analyzed. Results xfter intervention, the maintenance knowledge of the intervention group was significantly higher than that of the control group [(36.95±2.84) scores vs.(31.78 ± 4.79) scores,t=5.639,P<0.05].The incidence rate of complications in the intervention group was lower than that of the control group [21.6% (8/37) vs.62.2%(23/37),x2=12.491,P<0.01].Conclusions The peer education can improve patients' maintenance knowledge about PICC and reduce the occurrence rate of the complications of PICC.

Objective To explore the effects of mental practice on upper extremity function after stroke. Methods Thirty sub-acute stroke patients were randomly divided into a treatment group ( n=15 ) and a control group (n=15). The patients in the control group were treated with conventional therapy. The patients in the treat-ment group were treated with motor imagery therapy in addition. All patients were assessed using the Fugl-Meyer mo-tor assessment (FMA) and the motor assessment scale (bIAS) before treatment and after 2, 4 and 8 weeks of treat-ment. Results After 2 weeks of treatment, average MAS scores in the treatment group improved significantly com-pared with before treatment, but there was no significant difference between the two groups. After 4 weeks, FMA and MAS scores in the two groups had improved, and the FMA scores in the treatment group were significantly higher than those of the control group. After 8 weeks, the FMA and MAS scores of both groups had further improved significant-ly, but the average FMA and MAS scores in the treatment group were now significantly higher than those in the control group. Conclusions Mental practice can improve the functional performance of the upper extremities of stroke pa-tients.

Objective To study the effect of assessment criteria for thoracic surgery health education in the health education to patients undergoing thoracic surgeries. Methods One hundred and forty patients undergoing selective surgeries were evenly divided by their registration sequence into the control and experiment groups:The former received routine health education and the latter the health education based on thoracic surgery health education criteria. The effects of the health education were assessed by self-designed recognition evaluation criteria for thoracic surgery health education. Results The experiment group was significantly better than the control in terms of health-related knowledge, health belief and health behaviors, except operative approach, anesthesia method and intraoperative medication(all P<0.05).Conclusions The assessment criteria for thoracic surgery health education are helpful for the nurses to perform health education purposefully and pertinently. The criteria are also applicable clinically for the nursing administers to carry out health education assessment.
