Neuroscience Bulletin 2006;22(2):110-114
Objective To examine the effects of urotensin II (UII) on the discharges of neurons in CA1 area of hippocampal slices by using extracellular recording technique. Results (1) In response to the application of UII (0.3, 3.0, 30.0, 300.0 nmol/L, n =77) into the perfusate for 2 min, the spontaneous discharge rates (SDR) of 63/77 (81.8%) neurons were significantly decreased in a dose-dependent manner. (2) Pretreatment with bicuculline (BIC, 100 mu mol/L), a specific GABA(A) receptor antagonist, led to a marked increase in the SDR of 6/7 (85.71%) neurons in an epileptiform pattern. The increased discharges were not significantly changed after UII (30.0 nmol/L) was applied into the perfusate for 2 min. (3) Pretreatment with picrotoxin (PIC, 50 mu mol/L) , a selective blocker of Cl(-) channel, led to an increase in the SDR of all 8/8 (100%) neurons. The increased discharges were not influenced by the UII (30.0 nmol/L) applied. (4) Application of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 50 mu mol/L) into the perfusate for 2 min also significantly augmented the SDR of 14/16 (87.5%) neurons , then UII (30.0 nmol/L) applied into the perfusate reduced the increased the SDR of all 14/14 ( 100% ) neurons. Conclusion These results suggest that UII may decrease neuronal activity by potentiating GABA(A) receptor-mediated Cl(-) current in hippocampal CA1 neurons, and involved with the mediation of nitric oxide.

Journal of Southern Medical University 2006;26(2):208-210
OBJECTIVETo investigate the coping strategies of the community-based population in Shenzhen.
METHODSTotally 5,940 subjects from the communities in Shenzhen were sampled and tested with the Simplified Coping Style questionnaire.
RESULTSThe most common coping strategies adopted by the community residents in Shenzhen were "consoling themselves" (33.1%) and "looking at the bright side of things" (31.4%), and the least adopted coping strategy was "relieving distress by smoking, drinking, taking medicine and eating" (57.8%); the strategies left out from their choices were mostly negative strategies. The scores for positive coping strategy factors of community residents in Shenzhen were greater than those of negative ones, with a mean difference of 0.43. The scores of both positive and negative coping strategy factors of these residents were significantly lower than those of general population in other mainland cities (P<0.001), with mean differences of 0.12 and 0.36, respectively.
CONCLUSIONThe community residents in Shenzhen adopt mostly positive strategies for coping with frustration, which benefit their status of self-rated health.

Objective To affirm and calssify the arsas with high water iodine and the endemic areas of indline excess goiter in Jiangsu Privince accirding to mational standard. Methods A cross section survey was condueted in 2005 at township level in Fenxian,Tongshan,Suining,Pizhou counties in Xuzhou municipal and Chuzhou district in Huai'an municipal in Jiangsu Province One sample of dringing well water from five directions in the five villages located dircetions of every township namely east west south north and central.was tested for its water iodine concentration. If the sample number sas less than 5 in one village, then all the well water would be tested Endemic stutas of iodine excess goiter was investigated in those townships whose menian water iodine comcentration was between 150 to 300 μg/L Then status was affirmed and reclassifed according.to National Criteria GB/T 19280-2003 Results In all 158 tawnships from the 6 counties the median of water iodine concentration in 79 townships were over 150 μg/L with 32 townships in the range of 150 to 300μg/L In those 32 townships 9 met the criteria of area of high water iodine 23 accorded with that of encemic areas of iosine excess goiter 16 had stopped the supply of non-iodzed salt in advace, but 16 newly detected areas were still served with iodized salt Four were 300 μg/L Conctusions Iodized salt intervention should be stopped in all townships with the problems of high water iodine and the endmic areas of iodine excess goter in order to prevent the possible hazards due to double intade.

OBJECTIVETo compare the clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis of patients with small (≤5 cm) solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas (SPN) and those with large (>5 cm) SPNs.
METHODSWe retrospectively analyzed the clinical characteristics, laboratory findings, radiological features, treatment and prognosis of 148 patients with histologically confirmed SPN between August, 2006 and December, 2014 and compared the data between patients with small SPNs (≤5 cm) and those with large SPNs (>5 cm).
RESULTSIn the large SPN group, the female-to-male ratio was significantly higher than that in small SPN group (61/8 vs 56/23, P=0.009) and the patients were significantly younger in large SPN group (28.3±12.3 vs 33.0±11.4 years, P=0.016). Small SPNs (≤5 cm) typically presented as inhomogeneous solid or cystic tumors, while large SPNs (>5 cm) often appeared as homogeneous solid and cystic tumors, but they did not show any significant difference in aggressive behaviors (P=0.288). The 5-year disease-free survival of patients with small SPNs was 100%, and the 1-, 3-, and 5-year disease-free survival of patients with large SPNs was 98.6%, 94.9%, and 89.3%, respectively (P=0.030), showing no significant differences in the overall survival between the two groups.
CONCLUSIONSmall SPNs and large SPNs have different clinical characteristics. Even with complete resection, tumors larger than 5 cm are more likely to have tumor recurrence and metastasis, and close follow-up is recommended for these patients.
