Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2023;40(6):1235-1241
Rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) is a type of psychological visual stimulation experimental paradigm that requires participants to identify target stimuli presented continuously in a stream of stimuli composed of numbers, letters, words, images, and so on at the same spatial location, allowing them to discern a large amount of information in a short period of time. The RSVP-based brain-computer interface (BCI) can not only be widely used in scenarios such as assistive interaction and information reading, but also has the advantages of stability and high efficiency, which has become one of the common techniques for human-machine intelligence fusion. In recent years, brain-controlled spellers, image recognition and mind games are the most popular fields of RSVP-BCI research. Therefore, aiming to provide reference and new ideas for RSVP-BCI related research, this paper reviewed the paradigm design and system performance optimization of RSVP-BCI in these three fields. It also looks ahead to its potential applications in cutting-edge fields such as entertainment, clinical medicine, and special military operations.

Chinese Medical Sciences Journal 2023;38(2):77-93
Background In mainland China, patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) have approximately an 40% prevalence of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV). This disease leads to recurrent retinal pigment epithelium detachment (PED), extensive subretinal or vitreous hemorrhages, and severe vision loss. China has introduced various treatment modalities in the past years and gained comprehensive experience in treating PCV.Methods A total of 14 retinal specialists nationwide with expertise in PCV were empaneled to prioritize six questions and address their corresponding outcomes, regarding opinions on inactive PCV, choices of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) monotherapy, photodynamic therapy (PDT) monotherapy or combined therapy, patients with persistent subretinal fluid (SRF) or intraretinal fluid (IRF) after loading dose anti-VEGF, and patients with massive subretinal hemorrhage. An evidence synthesis team conducted systematic reviews, which informed the recommendations that address these questions. This guideline used the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) approach to assess the certainty of evidence and grade the strengths of recommendations. Results The panel proposed the following six conditional recommendations regarding treatment choices. (1) For patients with inactive PCV, we suggest observation over treatment. (2) For treatment-na?ve PCV patients, we suggest either anti-VEGF monotherapy or combined anti-VEGF and PDT rather than PDT monotherapy. (3) For patients with PCV who plan to initiate combined anti-VEGF and PDT treatment, we suggest later/rescue PDT over initiate PDT. (4) For PCV patients who plan to initiate anti-VEGF monotherapy, we suggest the treat and extend (T&E) regimen rather than the pro re nata (PRN) regimen following three monthly loading doses. (5) For patients with persistent SRF or IRF on optical coherence tomography (OCT) after three monthly anti-VEGF treatments, we suggest proceeding with anti-VEGF treatment rather than observation. (6) For PCV patients with massive subretinal hemorrhage (equal to or more than four optic disc areas) involving the central macula, we suggest surgery (vitrectomy in combination with tissue-plasminogen activator (tPA) intraocular injection and gas tamponade) rather than anti-VEGF monotherapy. Conclusions Six evidence-based recommendations support optimal care for PCV patients' management.

Chinese Journal of Contemporary Pediatrics 2022;24(6):626-630
OBJECTIVES:
To evaluate the effectiveness of induction therapy with exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) in pediatric Crohn's disease (CD).
METHODS:
A retrospective analysis was performed on the medical data of 62 children with CD who received EEN in Children's Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, from March 2013 to August 2021. The medical data included general information and height, weight, Pediatric Crohn's Disease Activity Index (PCDAI), Crohn's Disease Endoscopic Index of Severity, C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and serum albumin level before treatment and after 8 weeks of treatment. The changes in the above indicators were compared before and after treatment.
RESULTS:
Among the 62 children with CD, there were 39 boys (63%) and 23 girls (37%), with a mean age of (11.9±3.0) years at diagnosis. Among the 55 children who completed EEN treatment for at least 8 weeks, 48 (87%) achieved clinical remission at week 8. PCDAI at week 8 was significantly lower than that before treatment (P<0.001). Except for 17 children with involvement of the small intestine alone and 3 children with involvement of the colon who did not receive colonoscopy reexamination, the remaining 35 children with involvement of the colon received colonoscopy reexamination after the 8-week EEN treatment. Of the 35 children, 29 (83%) achieved mucosal healing. As for the 48 children who achieved clinical remission at week 8, there were significant improvements in height-for-age Z-score and body mass index-for-age Z-score at week 8 (P<0.01). As for the 7 children who did not achieve clinical remission at week 8, there were no significant changes in height-for-age Z-score and body mass index-for-age Z-score at week 8 (P>0.05).
CONCLUSIONS
The 8-week EEN treatment has a good effect on clinical remission and mucosal healing in children with CD. For the children with CD achieving clinical remission, EEN can improve their height and body mass index.

Chinese Journal of Experimental Traditional Medical Formulae 2022;28(12):96-102
ObjectiveTo study the effect of icariin on the proliferative capacity of hepatocellular carcinoma cell line CLC5 and the underlying mechanism. MethodThe targets of icariin were screened out by network pharmacology, and the target network and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network were constructed to predict the possible targets and pathways of icariin. CCK-8 assay was employed to explore the effects of different concentrations (0, 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50 μmol·L-1) of icariin on the viability of CLC5 cells. Further, CLC5 cells were treated with 0, 25, 50 μmol·L-1 icariin, and the effect of icariin on CLC5 cell proliferation was examined by Edu-488 assay and clone formation assay (CFA). Western blot was employed to measure the expression levels of proteins in the protein kinase B (Akt)/glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β)/cell cycle-dependent kinase (CDK) pathway in the CLC5 cells exposed to different concentrations of icariin. ResultNetwork pharmacological analysis revealed that icariin may inhibit the hepatocellular carcinoma via cell cycle arrest and inhibition of tumor cell proliferation. Compared with the blank group, icariin decreased the viability of CLC5 cells in a time- and concentration-dependent manner (P<0.01) and reduced the positive rate of Edu-488 and the colonies in CFA (P<0.05, P<0.01). Moreover, icariin down-regulated the protein levels of p-Akt, p-GSK3β, CDK4, and CyclinD1 (P<0.05, P<0.01). ConclusionIcariin may block cell cycle to suppress the proliferation of CLC5 cells via inhibiting the Akt/GSK3β/CDK pathway.

ObjectiveTo analyze the clinical features of patients with coexisting GFAP-IgG and AQP4-IgG in myelitis. MethodsWe performed a retrospective analysis of patients with myelitis and GFAP-IgG. ResultsTotally 55 cases of autoimmune GFAP astrocytopathy (GFAP-A) were collected. The clinical manifestations included headache, fever, myelitis, abnormal vision, abnormal behavior, ataxia, disturbance of consciousness, epilepsy, dyskinesia, cognitive dysfunction, and other manifestations. Thirty-one cases were accompanied by myelitis, and 8 cases were GFAP/AQP4 double positive with myelitis. The 8 double-positive cases all showed dysuria and sensory plane disturbance. The MRI of spinal cord showed lesions in eight patients, seven of which had spinal cord lesions more than three segments, and three of which had Gadolinium enhancement. CSF showed the increasing level of white blood cell count or protein in six patients and decreasing level of glucose signally in one patient. In this study, 8 cases of GFAP/AQP4 IgG double positive with myelitis, 16 cases of GFAP IgG single positive (except AQP4 IgG negative, neuron antibody, oligodendrocyte antibody and glial cell antibody are negative) with myelitis, and 47 cases of AQP4 IgG single positive (without other neural related antibodies) with myelitis NMOSD were selected. There was statistically difference between single positive group with GFAP-IgG (sGFAP-A) and double positive group with GFAP-IgG (dGFAP-A) and AQP4-IgG in fever and CSF protein level(P<0.05). ConclusionsGFAP/AQP4-IgG double-positive myelitis is relatively rare, which is different from the AQP4 single-positive myelitis in clinical features. The clinical manifestations include urination and defecation difficulties, sensory dysfunction. Spinal cord MRI usually manifests as long lesions extending over three vertebral segments, and cerebrospinal fluid examinations often indicate increased levels of white blood cells or protein.

Objective To measure the prevalence of mental health symptoms and identify the associated factors among college students at the beginning of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)outbreak in China. Methods We carried out a multi-center cross-sectional study via snowball sampling and convenience sampling of the college students in different areas of China. The rates of self-reported depression, anxiety, and stress and post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD)were assessed via the 21-item Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale(DASS-21)and the 6-item Impact of Event Scale-Revised(IES-6),respectively.Covariates included sociodemographic characteristics,health-related data, and information of the social environment.Data pertaining to mental health service seeking were also collected.Multivariate Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the risk factors. Results A total of 3641 valid questionnaires were collected from college students. At the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak,535(14.69%)students had negative emotions, among which 402(11.04%),381(10.49%),and 171(4.90%)students had the symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress,respectively.Meanwhile,1245(34.19%)college students had PTSD.Among the risk factors identified, male gender was associated with a lower likelihood of reporting depression symptoms(AOR=0.755,P=0.037],and medical students were at higher risk of depression and stress symptoms than liberal arts students(AOR=1.497,P=0.003;AOR=1.494,P=0.045).Family support was associated with lower risks of negative emotions and PTSD in college students(AOR=0.918,P<0.001;AOR=0.913,P<0.001;AOR=0.899,P<0.001;AOR=0.971,P=0.021). Conclusions College students were more sensitive to public health emergencies, and the incidence of negative emotions and PTSD was significantly higher than that before the outbreak of COVID-19.More attention should be paid to female college students who were more likely to develop negative emotions. We should strengthen positive and proper propaganda via mass media and help college students understand the situation and impact of COVID-19.Furthermore,we should enhance family support for college students. The government and relevant agencies need to provide appropriate mental health services to the students under similar circumstances to avoid the deterioration of their mental well-being.

Chinese Journal of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery 2022;57(11):1304-1310
Objective: To perform a cost-effectiveness analysis of endoscopic surgery versus intensity-modulated radiotherapy in the treatment of locally recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (rNPC) from a health-economic perspective. Methods: From September 30, 2011 to January 16, 2017, a total of 200 patients were enrolled in the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, the First People's Hospital of Foshan, and Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center. These patients were diagnosed as locally rT1-rT3 stage rNPC and were randomly assigned 1︰1 to the endoscopic surgery group (ENPG) and the intensity-modulated radiotherapy group (IMRT). There were 69 males and 31 females in ENPG, aging from 38 to 55 years. There were 72 males and 28 females in IMRT aging from 41 to 54 years. A retrospective cost-effectiveness analysis of the cohort was conducted using a Markov model. For each modality, data on survival and quality-adjusted life year (QALY) were sourced from relevant articles, and cost prices were included regarding treatment. Weibull distribution was used to estimate time-dependent transition probability. Beta-regression was used to convert the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 (EORTC QLQ-C30) to utility. Results: The total cost of ENPG was 29 611.88 yuan, and the total cost of IMRT was 110 082.51 yuan. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of ENPG versus radiotherapy for locally rNPC was -85 555.88 yuan/QALY, which was less than 3 times of Chinese gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. Sensitivity analysis showed that the cost of IMRT had the greatest impact on ICER. ICER was stable within 10% fluctuation of all the parameters. Conclusion: It is economical cost-effective to treat locally rNPC with ENGP versus IMRT.
