Objective: To study the biocompatibility of CFR/PEEK composite in bone tissue after implanted in lumbar intervertebral space and to evaluate its role in the interbody fusion compared to the allograft bone. Methods: Thirteen beagles were chosen among which 7 were implanted with the disk-like CFR/PEEK composite in the lumbar intervertebral space and the other 6 were implanted with allograft bone. X-ray, QCT and histological examination were employed at 6, 12 and 24 months postoperatively. Results: The X-ray results of fusion segment were in conformity with the QCT's as well as that of histological results. All animals obtained a complete fusion at 24 months. Histological examination revealed that the anterior soft tissue to the implant exhibited a nonspecific foreign body reaction with connective tissue embed the biomaterials. Carbon fragment were seen in the surrounding tissue and some of the debric were phagocytosed by foreign body giant cell. Histological examination of bone and material revealed that new bone grew along the hole of CFR/PEEK implant. Conclusion: CFR/PEEK has an excellent biocompatibility to bone tissue.

Growth suitability as assessment indicators for medicinal plants cultivation was proposed based on chemical quality determination and ecological factors analysis by Maxent and ArcGIS model. Notopterygium incisum, an endangered Chinese medicinal plant, was analyzed as a case, its potential distribution areas at different suitability grade and regionalization map were formulated based on growth suitability theory. The results showed that the most suitable habitats is Sichuan province, and more than 60% of the most suitable areawas located in the western Sichuan such as Aba and Ganzi prefectures for N. incisum. The results indicated that habitat altitude, average air temperature in September, and vegetation types were the dominant factors contributing to the grade of plant growth, precipitation and slope were the major factors contributing to notopterol accumulation in its underground parts, while isoimperatorin in its underground parts was negatively corelated with precipitation and slope of its habitat. However, slope as a factor influencing chemical components seemed to be a pseudo corelationship. Therefore, there were distinguishing differences between growth suitability and quality suitability for medicinal plants, which was helpful to further research and practice of cultivation regionalization, wild resource monitoring and large-scale cultivation of traditional Chinese medicine plants.

Chinese Journal of Burns 2005;21(1):40-42
OBJECTIVETo compare the effects of different kind of methods in the management of hydrofluoric acid burn in early postburn stage in rabbits.
METHODSThirty-three rabbits were inflicted with burn by 55% of hydrofluoric acid covering 5% TBSA, and were randomly divided into 3 groups, i.e. A (n = 13, with 5 ml.kg(-1).h(-1)of isotonic saline intravenous infusion), B (n = 10, with isotonic saline and 50 g/L of calcium gluconate infusion in dose of 20 mg/kg at different time points), and C (n = 10, with the same treatment as B group, and with excision of burn wound at 0.5 post burn hour) groups. The serum levels of fluorine and calcium were determined before and after various postburn hours, and the mortality rate was statistically analyzed.
RESULTS(1) The serum level of fluorine in A (8.37 +/- 2.62 mg/L) and B (8.59 +/- 2.25 mg/L) groups reached the peak value at 1 postburn hour (PBH), which was 107 times higher than that before the burn injury. The serum level of fluorine in B group was significantly lower than that in A group at 24 PBH (P < 0.05), while that in C group declined to (6.20 +/- 0.23) mg/L, which was obviously lower than that in A and B groups (P < 0.01). (2) The serum calcium level declined after burns, reaching the lowest level at 8 to 12 PBH. and began to increase at 24 PBH. Compared with normal calcium value, the serum level of calcium in A, B and C groups declined to as much as 46%, 32% and 26%, respectively. Statistically significant difference was found between C and B groups (P < 0.01). (3) The mortality rate in the three groups within 72 PBH were 30.8%, 12.5% and 0.0%, respectively.
CONCLUSIONEarly removal of burn area and calcium supplementation could help quickly decrease blood fluorine, reverse the fatal hypocalcemia and the multiple systemic toxic injury in rabbits inflicted with hydrofluoric acid injury.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effects of surgical treatment and prognosis of aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) in mobile spine.
METHODSA total of 12 patients with ABC were operated on from 1996 to 2006, and the clinical data were retrospectively reviewed. The patients included 7 male and 5 female, aged from 16 to 52 years (mean, 29 years). Surgical interventions were selected according to WBB criteria. Seven patients underwent total spondylectomy, four underwent resection of posterior arch, one patient received sagittal resection only. Anti-poster or post-lateral approach reconstruction with bone-graft or bone cement and transpedicular screws fixation were performed in the cases. Eight cases received radiotherapy after the operation.
RESULTSThe mean operation blood lose was 3210 ml. The patients were followed-up for 10 to 116 months (mean, 41.8 months). Seven patients got complete recover of spinal cord function, 4 patients experienced local recurrence in 1-2 years post operation. One patient died of multiple metastasis of chondrosarcoma after radiotherapy.
CONCLUSIONSABC in spine is an aggressive disease with high local recurrence rate. Enbloc if possible provides the best result, with excellent prognosis. Radiotherapy should be selected carefully.

Journal of Zhejiang University. Science. B 2009;10(2):79-86
Midkine is a heparin-binding growth factor, which plays important roles in the regulation of cell growth and differentiation. The non-tagged recombinant human midkine (rhMK) is therefore required to facilitate its functional studies of this important growth factor. In the present work, rhMK was expressed in Escherichia coli (E. coli) BL21 (DE3). The expression of midkine was efficiently induced by isopropyl-beta-D-thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG). After sonication, midkine was recovered in an insoluble form, and was dissolved in guanidine hydrochloride buffer. Renaturation of the denatured protein was carried out in the defined protein refolding buffer, and the refolded protein was purified using S-Sepharose ion-exchange chromatography. The final preparation of the rhMK was greater than 98% pure as measured by sodium dodecylsulfate-polyacrylamid gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). The purified rhMK enhanced the proliferation of NIH3T3 cells.
