AIM: To quantitatively investigate transforming growth factor-β(TGF-β) and its receptors in normal bulbar conjunctival tissues and pterygium tissues. METHODS: Thirty cases of pterygium patients were randomly selected to undergo surgical resection of pterygium lesion, and the normal margin of bulbar con-junctival tissues were collected as control. Gene expres-sion was detected quantitatively by the method of quantitative real-time PCR (QRT-PCR) analysis. RESULTS: The expression level of TGF-β1 and TGF-β2 was 4.26×10-7±1.45×10-7 and 1.08×10-10±0.68×10-10 in normal bulbar conjunctival tissues, while 10.67×10-7±7.47×10-7 and 8.23×10-11±6.63×10-11 in pterygium tissues. The expression level of TGF-βRⅠand TGF-βRⅡwas 0.003015±0.0036 and 5.33×10-5±5.05×10-5in normal bulbar conjunctival tissues, while 0.000379±0.000281 and 1.002×10-5±9.04×10-6 in pterygium tissues. The expression level of TGF-β1 and TGF-β2 in pterygium was elevated (P<0.01). TGF-β1 expression level in pterygium increase 2.9±2.8 times than in normal conjunctiva. TGF-β2 expression level in pterygium increase 7.5±1.4 times than in normal conjunctiva. The expression level of TGF-βRⅠin pterygium was significantly lower (P<0.05). The expression level of TGF-βRII in pterygium was significantly lower (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: QRT-PCR is an effective method to quantitatively detect gene expression in eye. The upregulation of TGF-β1 and TGF-β2 and downregulation of their receptors expression may play an important role in the pathogenesis of pterygium, which is noteworthy further investigation in diagnosis and treatment of pterygium.real-time PCR; gene expression

Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are widespread in the environment. SRB are obligate anaerobes and capable of dissimilatory reduction of sulfate. SRB have application prospects in the control of environmental pollution due to that many pollutants can be removed by SRB. The biological characteristics and metabolic mechanisms of SRB are introduced, and the application of SRB in the treatment of environmental pollution is described in this paper. The research progress of Cr(Ⅵ ) reduction and Cr(Ⅵ ) removal from wastewater by SRB is reviewed, and future direction of research on the control of Cr(Ⅵ ) pollution by SRB is also analysed.

Objective To investigate clinical features and prognostic factors in acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients with opportunistic infections.Methods Forty-two cases of AIDS patients with opportunistic infections were enrolled in this study.Clinical data and major factors affecting the prognosis were analyzed using Logistic regression.Results Bacterial infection was the first etiological factor(57.1%) of opportunistic infections in AIDS patients.Eighty-three point three percent of patients infected with more than two kind of etiological agents.Fifty-seven point one per- cent of cases were infected in multiple sites.CD4~+ T cells count was associated with the opportunistic infections.Conclusions The CD4~- T lymphocytes count is the key factor affecting the prognosis of AIDS patients with opportunistic infections.The average of CD4~+ T lymphocytes count is significant- ly related with the major opportunistic infections in AIDS paitents.

Objective To explore clinical application of single utility port or single port video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy.Methods Conducting a prospective study to 191 patients with lung disease who underwent complete video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) lobectomy in Department of Thoracic Surgery of The People's Hospital of Wuhan University from June 2013 to Dec 2014.Results Of the 191 patients, 35 underwent left upper lobectomy, 42 underwent left lower lobectomy, 43 underwent right upper lobectomy, 11 underwent right middle lobectomy, 47 underwent right lower lobectomy, and 13 underwent bilobectomy.Operations were successful in all patients with 3 patients transferred for open thoracotomy for severe adhesion or bleeding.A total of 7 of 78 upper lobectomy and 8 of 113 middle or lower lobectomy was done with adding another incision for severe adhesion.The mean operative time was 50 ～ 190 (80.3 ±43.2) min.The mean blood losing was 90 ～ 350 (145.4 ± 56.2) ml.Thirty nine patients underwent upper lobectomy, who were placed two chest tubes, respectively.The upper chest drainage duration was (1.5 ±0.8) d, and the lower chest drainage duration was (4.2 ± 1.3) d.Forty eight patients underwent lower lobectomy, middle lobectomy, or bilobectomy, who were placed one chest tube, respectively.The chest drainage duration was(4.0 ± 1.7)d.The mean recovery time after operation was (6.1 ± 2.5) d.Seventy six patients were diagnosed with lung cancer, and the average number of dissected lymph nodes from each patient was (14.7 ±6.9).The lung cancer was classified as tumor node metastasis (TNM) stage Ⅰ A, Ⅰ B,ⅡA, ⅡB and ⅢA in 67, 61, 34, 22 and 7 cases, respectively.No serious complications, such as bronchopleural fistula or death, occurred in perioperation.Conclusions In consideration of placing two chest tubes after upper lobectomy and placing one chest tube after lower lobectomy, middle lobectomy, or middle and lower lobectomy, we think single utility port-VATS (2-port) for upper lobectomy and single port-VATS lobectomy for lower lobectomy, middle lobectomy, or middle and lower lobectomy are technically safe and have the advantages of drainage, lessening pain, rapid postoperative recovery, and have no significant difference in operation time, the incidence of complications and the number of removed lymph nodes, compared to traditional 3-port-VATS.

Objective To investigate the diagnosis and treatment of septic shock and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) following transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy (TRUSPB). Methods We reported two cases,45 and 46 years old,of septic shock and MODS after TRUSPB from June 1996 to May 2011.10 cases like these two cases in literatures were acquired (3 cases in Chinese and 7 cases in English) from 1991 to 2011,and the causes of severe infections following transrectal prostate biopsy and its prophylactic procedures were discussed as well. Results The two cases,suffered postoperative septic shock and MODS 16 -40 h after being smoothly performed TRUSPB.One patient died four days after surgery and the other improved after five days antibiotic treatment.All the 12 cases had abrupt onsets and deteriorated rapidly,2 cases died and 1 case was performed amputation due to double lower limb gangrene,resulted in high mortality and morbidity.There are many risk factors,such as repeated puncture (4/12),diabetes (3/12),chronic infections (3/12) and used immune suppression (1/12),et al; blood culture was positive in 9 case and E.coli bacteria was the main bacteria(8/9),besides,half of them were multi-drug resistant (4/8) and other 2 cases were ESBLs ( + ) or 1 case was quinolone-resistant repectively.9 cases recovered after actively controlled infection using carbapenem and other treatment. Conclusions Transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy could cause serious complications such as septic shock,to which more attentions should be paid.Preoperative use of carbapenem should be recommended for patients with repeating biopsy or other risk factors.

OBJECTIVEUse propensity score methods to explore the effect of Shenqi Fuzheng injection (SQFZ) on ALT and AST lever of real worlds.

METHODHIS data from 18 hospitals was analyzed. Patients ranging from 18 to 80 years, it were divided into the cases group was used Shenqi Fuzheng injection > 21 days under the instruction, and control group used SQFZ ≤ 21 days. A large number of confounding biases are taken into account through the generalized boosted models (GBM) and multiple logistic regression model to estimate the treatment effects of SQFZ on abnormal changes in ALT and AST index and to explore possible influencing factors.

RESULTSventy and one confounding factors had been counterpoised, stratified analysis showed that the abnormal changes of cases group lower than control group, but not statistically significant.

CONCLUSIONAnalysis of HIS database showed that significant effects of SQFZ on abnormal changes in ALT and AST have not been found. The results of this study form the retrospective data, for the purpose of validating its clinical safety should be have a prospective clinical study of large sample.
