AIM: To compare the clinical outcomes of pterygium excision followed by translocation of adjacent conjunctival autograft with stem cells or transplantation of conjunctival autograft with stem cells to treat and prevent the recurrence of pterygium.METHODS: Fifty patients (60 eyes) were divided into 2groups, and pterygium excision followed by translocation of adjacent conjunctival autograft with stem cells (group A) and pterygium excision followed by transplantation of conjunctiva autograft harvested from counter-side limbus with stem cells (group B) were performed respectively. The surgical time of each case was recorded.RESULTS: All the 50 cases (60 eyes) of pterygium were recruited. The epithelization of cornea and conjunctiva in all cases finished in 2-5d, During the follow-up of 6-12mo, pterygium reoccurred in 2 cases (1 in each group), with no difference in recurrence rate. The mean surgical time was 25± 8min for group A,43± 11min for group B, the difference being statistically significant (P<0.05, t-test).CONCLUSION: Both methods, pterygium excision followed by translocation of adjacent conjunctival autograft with stem cells or transplantation of conjunctival autograft with stem cells are effective on treating and reducing the recurrence of pterygium. Compared with the latter, pterygium excision followed by translocation of adjacent conjunctival autograft with stem cells is simpler and easier to perform, and is preferred by the patients too.

Objective:To research the number and function of monocyte-macrophages in patients with chronic active hepatitis B. Methods:The 51 chronic viral hepatitis B( CHB) patients were selected randomly, which consisted of 20 cases of mild-moderate,31 cases of severe group and 13 cases of healthy controls. PBMCs were separated by percoll. Monocytes were tagged by CD14,the molecules CD80,CD86,HLA-DR and CD163 were detected by flow cytometry which expressed on the surface of PBMCs. Serum cytokine were detected for IL-10, IL-12 and IL-23 by ELISA. The distribution of CD68 was detected in the liver by immunohistochemical staining. Results:The expressions of CD80 for all chronic hepatitis B patients were lower than the controls respectively,no matter mild-moderate or even severe group. Similarly, the HBV patients expressed lower level of CD86 in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells when compared with the control group. Furthermore, there was statistically difference between the levels of CD86 in severe group compared with control group (P<0. 01). As the expression of CD80 and CD86,the levels of HLA-DR in the patents had also declined when compared with controls. While the HLA-DR levels in both the mild-moderate HBV hepatitis groups were statistically significant higher than the severe group (P<0. 01). Different from the above all,the expression of CD163 in all chronic HBV hepatitis was higher than the control group. The CD68 positive cells in chronic HBV patients were observed and infiltrated increasingly in portal area and hepatic lobules (P<0. 05). There were statistically significant differences of IL-10 levels between the mild-moderate group, severe group and the control group, respectively (P<0. 01). Conclusion:Macrophages have participated in the pathological lesions of liver in CHB patients, among peripheral blood mononuclear cells, the phenomena of imbalance between type M1/M2 and polarization to type M2 have been observed, which participated in the development of the chronicity of CHB.

AIM:To investigate protective effects of novel extract of Ginkgo biloba(nGBE) in different administration modes on glutamate-induced neuronal damage.METHODS: The values of Essential nGBE were obtained by supercritical CO_2 fluid extraction.Based on glutamate excitotoxicity of primary cultures from neonatal Wistar rats hippocampal,by use of Trypan blue dye staining, testing the lactate dehydrogenase leakage from cultured neurons and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated nick end labeling(TUNEL) method,we examined glutamate-induced necrosis and apoptosis. The protective effects of nGBE in different administration modes(pre-treatment and post-treatment) were adopted and compared with the NMDA receptor uncompetitive antagonist MK-801 in acute-treatment.RESULTS:Treatment with nGBE in two administration modes all could increase ratio of surviving neuron, decrease LDH efflux and reduce ratio of neuron apoptosis in different degree, and the benefit of pre-treatment was superior to post-treatment,but inferior to MK-801.CONCLUSION:The extracts of Ginkgo biloba used nowadays in cerebrovascular disease as post-treatment have no prominent effect as far as their mechanism of antiexcitotoxicity. However they may have more value if they were used for precautionary intervention in high-risk population.

Objective To explore the clinical effect of modified frontalis muscle suspension for severe blepharoptosis correction. Design Retrospective case series. Participants Fifty-six cases (101 eyes) with severe blepharoptosis. Methods Modified frontalis mus- cle suspension was adopted. The technique included single blepharoplasty-type incision, dissecting the posterior gaps of frontalis muscu- lar fasciae ahead, then euthyphoria isolating anterior gaps of rontalis muscular fasciae, using frontalis muscle transfer without vertical incision. Main Outcome Measure The positon chang of the upper eyelid in the primary position gaze. Results The follow-up period ranged from 8 to 20 months (mean, 13.6 months). All the patients were deemed to have a good surgical outcome. Complications such as ectropion and corneal exposure were avoided. But ten eyes required reoperation for undercorrection, six eyes for overcorrection and two eyes for entropion. Conclusion This surgical technique is a useful procedure that results in substantial cosmetic and functional im- provement with few complications.
