Acta Physiologica Sinica 2011;63(5):431-441
Multi-channel recording is now a widely used tool in neuroscience research that makes it possible to study the activity of neuron population. The data collected from multiple neurons indicate important information of neural coding rules and brain functional mechanism, which requires advanced computational techniques to decode. Here we reviewed the methods for multi-channel neural data analysis and gave brief introduction of their typical application for studying different kinds of neural data.

Objective To observe effect of arginine on wound healing of diabetic rats.Meth- ods Forty male Lewis rats were equally and randomly divided into diabetic group and normal control group. The diabetic group were rendered with diabetic by using intraperitoneal(IP)streptozotocin seven days prior to surgery and underwent a dorsal skin incision with implantation of polyvinyl-alcohol sponges. Either of two groups were subdivided into arginine treatment group and saline treatment group,10 rats in each group,of which the arginine treatment group received arginine at 1 g/kg per day by IP injection, while the saline treatment group received saline injection only.Animals were sacrificed 10 days post wound to observe antibreakage tension, hydroxyproline content and mRNA expression of procollagenⅠandⅢ.Results Diabetic wounds had greatly decreased breaking strengths compared with controls. Arginine significantly enhanced wound breaking strengths, increased wound hydroxyproline levels and ele- vated mRNA for procollagenⅠandⅢin both diabetic and control animals as compared to their saline-trea- ted counterparts. Conclusion Arginine can effectively promote healing of diabetic wounds in rats.

OBJECTIVETo compare the expressions of transforming growth factor alpha (TGFalpha), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) between pheochromocytoma (PHEO) tissues and normal adrenal medulla tissues.
METHODSThe mRNA expressions of TGFalpha, TNFalpha, and VEGF detected by RT-PCR, were compared between 22 PHEO tissues and 18 normal adrenal medulla tissues (according with the principle of medical ethnics). Immunohistochemistry staining was performed on 27 PHEO tissues and 14 normal adrenal medulla tissues. The comparisons of the protein expression of TGFalpha, TNFalpha, and VEGF were analyzed in both of PHEO tissues and normal adrenal medulla tissues.
RESULTSCompared with normal adrenal medulla tissues, the expressions of TGFalpha and TNFalpha mRNA and protein were higher in PHEO tissues, and VEGF145 mRNA expression was also higher in PHEO tissues, while there was no significant difference of the mRNA expression of VEGF121 and VEGF165 between these two tissues. Positive staining rates for VEGF of endothelial cells and tumor cells were higher in PHEO tissues than in normal adrenal medulla tissues. Expressions of the TGFalpha, TNFalpha, and VEGF protein were higher in extra-adrenal PHEO than in adrenal PHEO. The TNFalpha immunohistochemistry staining rate was higher in the malignant or multiple PHEO than in the benign or single PHEO.
CONCLUSIONSThe mRNA and protein expressions of TGFalpha, TNFalpha, and VEGF are higher in PHEO tissues than those in normal adrenal medulla tissues. Expressions of these cytokines vary in PHEO with different characteristic.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the relationship between sulfotransferase 1Al polymorphism, diet and colorectal cancer susceptibility.
METHODSA case-control study of 140 cancers and 343 health controls was conducted to investigate the role of sulfotransferase 1A1 polymorphism and meat consumption in colorectal carcinogenesis. Genotypes of sulfotransferase 1A1 polymorphism were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP).
RESULTSThere was no significant difference in allele frequency of SULT1A1 between the control and cancer patient populations. After adjustment for age, sex, smoking and history of diseases, red meat and well-done meat intake showed no significant association with colorectal cancer. Consumption of red meat more than 5 kg per year combined with SULT1Al slow sulfation (Arg/His and His/His) had a statistically significant association with the risk of rectal cancer ( OR = 3.78; 95% CI: 1.08 - 13. 20) compared to that consumed red meat less than 5 kg per year with fast sulfation (Arg/Arg).
CONCLUSIONThis study suggests that SULT1A1 slow sulfation combined with higher intake of red meat may be associated with an elevated risk of rectal cancer.

OBJECTIVETo investigate various activities of dissolved matter of glycyrrhizic acid of Radix Glycyrrhizae and the powder by supermicro-pulverization.
METHODThe contents of glycyrrhizic acid in different samples were tested.
RESULTThe dissolved matter of glycyrrhizic acid was greatly increased by supermicro-pulverization. The more time used for grinding, the smaller the size of the powder, and the easier the glycyrrhizic acid would be dissolved.
CONCLUSIONSupermicro-pulverization is helpful to the dissolved matter of glycyrrhizic acid of Radix Glycyrrhizae, and the size of powder exerts great influence on dissolved matter of glycyrrhizic acid.

This study was aimed to investigate the distribution of chromosomal aberrational karyotype in myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) subgroups, the characterizations of numerical and structural aberration. The chromosome was prepared with simple culture of bone marrow, and the karyotype was analysed by G banding technique. The results showed tht 54 out of 127 patients (42.5%) had clonal chromosome aberrations, and the abnormal rates were different in subgroups: 30% (3/10) in MDS-RA, 35.9% (23/64) in MDS-RCMD, 22.2% (2/9) in MDS-RAS, 45% (9/20) in MDS-RAEB-I, 66.7% (14/21) in MDS-RAEB-II, 100% (3/3) in 5q-syndrome, respectively. Among 54 abnormal chromosome patients, 21 patients showed numerical aberration, 14 patients showed structural aberration, and the other 19 patients showed both numerical and structural aberration. The order of frequent aberrations was as follows complex karyotype (11.02%, 14/127), single +8 (10.24%, 13/127), -7/7q- (3.9%, 5/127), 1q+ (3.15%, 4/127), -X/-Y (3.15%, 4/127), 20q- (2.36%, 3/127), 5q- (2.36%, 3/127). The frequency of complex karyotype in MDS-RAEB (including RAEB-I and RAEB-II) was higher than that in non MDS-RAEB (including RA, RCMD, RAS, 5q-syndrome) (P < 0.05), and the frequency of balanced translocation was lower than that in non-balanced translocation (P < 0.05), and both of the two balanced translocation patients were found in MDS-RAEB. It is concluded that MDS is highly heterogeneous clonal disorder, a great majority of cytogenetic changes can be detected and most of which are recurrent aberrations, balanced translocations are rare, and only found in MDS-RAEB. The frequency of complex karyotype in MDS-RAEB is higher, and the patients with dup (1) (q21q32) recurrent abnormality is common in this study.

Objective To investigate the myocardial damage in rats fed with corn from Keshan disease area added with bean puree. Methods Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 3 groups according to their body weights, and fed with corn, corn from Keshan disease area added with bean puree, corn from non-endemic area. The GSH-Px activity of vena cardalis blood was examined in 1 and 3 months, rats were sacrificed after being fed for 6 months to examine the heart changes with HE stain. Results The three groups of GSH-Px activity were different in 1 and 3 months respectively(F=23.60,72.46, all P<0.01); GSH-Px activity was (181.58±22.15), (44.76±28.59)U/L in rats fed with corn, was (195.03±17.66), (30.38±3.35)U/L in those fed with corn added with bean puree from Keshan disease area, lower than the group fed with corn of non-endemic area[(340.90±95.42), (125.17±13.64)U/L, all P < 0.01]. But the difference of GSH-Px activity between simple corn group and corn adding bean puree groups of Keshan disease area was not obvious(P>0.05). Myocardial damage incidence of the three groups was 3/9,1/9,2/7. Difference among three groups did not have statistical significance(χ2=1.33, P> 0.05). Conclusions Only corn from Keshan disease area may induce myocardial damage pathology change. Adding bean puree into corn does not increase damage.
