Electron microscopic study of two malignant fibrous histiocytomas confirmed the presence of previously described tumor cells in the literature. In addition, there existed intermediate cells with morphologic features of both myofibroblasts and histiocytes, or both histiocytes and smooth muscle cells. Our result supported the idea that malignant fibrous histiocytoma may be derived from the undifferentiated mesenchymal cells that differentiate primarily along a fibroblastic and histiocytic cells.

Fibrous histiocytomas are characterized by a variable combination of cells with fibroblastic and histiocytic features. They exhibit a distinctive but inconstant cellular arrangement referred to as a storiform or cartwheel pattern. Considerable corfusion has enveloped these tumors as a result of their various terminology-fibrous histiocytoma, dermatofibroma, sclerosing hemangioma, fibroxanthoma, subepidermal nodular fibrosis, xanthogranuloma, giant cell tumor of tendon sheath. A histologically benign but locally infiltrating, 15 * 20cm sized, fibrous histiocytoma was found in the posterior aspect of left thigh of a 17-year-old man. The tumor was incompletely excised due to adhesion of the tumor mass to sciatic nerve and then radiation therpy was combined, Histogenesis and prognostic aspects of the tumor are discussed.

4.Expression of Survivin in Non-Small Cell Lung Carcinoma: Relationship to Tumor Biology and Prognosis in Surgically Treated Patients.

Korean Journal of Pathology 2005;39(3):151-157
BACKGROUND: Survivin, a novel member of inhibitor-of-apoptosis, is undetectable in most terminally differentiated nonproliferative adult tissue, but is overexpressed in some human malignancies. The survivin gene expression is repressed by binding of wild-type p53 with the survivin promotor. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of survivin expression, its association with p53 overexpression and proliferative index, and clinicopathological significance in non-small cell lung carcinomas (NSCLC). METHODS: Immunohistochemical stainings were performed in 59 cases of primary NSCLC for survivin, p53 and Ki-67. Correlations between the survivin expression, p53 overexpression and Ki-67 labeling index were analyzed. RESULTS: Survivin expression was detected in 47 carcinomas (80%) with nuclear immunoreactivity (56%). Survivin nuclear immunoreactivity revealed significantly worse prognosis in NSCLC patients (p=0.003), and correlated with lymph node metastasis (p=0.014), lymphovascular invasion (p=0.032), p53 overexpression, and Ki-67 labeling index (KI 24.2 +/- 6.9, p=0.045). Survivin expression was not correlated with histological type and pT status. CONCLUSIONS: High incidence of survivin overexpression in NSCLC suggests that survivin is involved in lung carcinogenesis, and nuclear expression of survivin can be used as a poor prognostic predictor in NSCLC patients. Expression of mutant p53 seems to be a possible mechanism of survivin up-regulation in NSCLC.

Obstetrics & Gynecology Science 2016;59(4):328-332
Female adnexal tumor of probable Wolffian origin (FATWO) is a rare disease entity that arises from the mesonephric duct system. FATWO is different than other gynecological cancers in terms of embryology. Here, we describe the case of a 52-year-old woman with malignant FATWO. The patient underwent explorative laparotomy and surgical staging after a frozen section revealed malignancy. Detailed examination of the pathologic findings were consistent with FATWO. Counseling and further testing were provided to the patient to assess the risk of germline mutation and epigenetic change. An O-6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase gene methylation test was positive, and all other tests were normal. This is the first study to report a case of O-6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase methylation with FATWO in Korea.

The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics 2010;2(2):54-57
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the periodontal and prosthodontic complications of multiple freestanding implants in the posterior jaws for up to 1 year of function. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eight patients received 20 implants posterior to canines. Two or more implants were consecutively inserted to each patient. Single crowns were delivered onto the implants. Marginal bone loss, implant mobility, probing depth, and screw loosening were examined to evaluate the clinical success of such restorations for maximum 1 year of functional loading. RESULTS: All the implants performed well during the observation period. Neither periodontal nor prosthodontic complications were found except a slight porcelain chipping. While the marginal bone level was on average 0.09 mm lower around the implant after 6 months of loading, it was 0.15 mm higher after 1 year. CONCLUSION: Within the limits of this investigation, separate single-tooth implant restorations to replace consecutive missing teeth may clinically function well in the posterior jaw.

The Journal of the Korean Society for Transplantation 2014;28(3):144-153
BACKGROUND: Normal renal function and health have been recognized as important factors in living donors after kidney donation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the health status and health-promoting lifestyle in living donors after kidney donation. METHODS: A total of 678 living-kidney donors were counted in our center from January 1990 to December 2011. Only 84 donors agreed to participate in the survey by telephone. We received consent for participation in our survey from 48 donors (57.1%). Data were collected from May to August 2013 using donor characteristics, health status, and Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile I (HPLP-I). RESULTS: The donors were predominantly female (62.5%) and the average age was 48.9+/-11.8 years, and the average period after nephrectomy was 9.7+/-5.7 years. The characteristics of donors included ideal body weight (37.5%), overweight (37.5%) in body mass index, and good health status (81.3%). Most donors underwent an annual medical check-up (56.2%), no health problem (81.3%), and no disease (64.6%). However, one patient was treated with dialysis for renal failure due to diabetes. The total average score for HPLP-I was 128.3+/-13.9. Higher than average scores (116.3+/-19.1) were observed for the general middle-aged woman. There were statistically significant differences in self-realization and nutrition in subsection of HPLP-I. Self-realization showed a higher score for Christian (F=2.743, P=0.041) and good health (F=3.389, P=0.017). Nutrition showed a higher score for overweight, obesity (F=6.783, P=0.000), and older than 60 (F=3.854, P=0.009). CONCLUSIONS: Most living kidney donors were healthy after their donation and had relatively high scores for health-promoting lifestyle. However, one patient had a serious health problem. In addition, younger, longer period after donation, and the rare health examination of donors showed a lower health-promoting lifestyle. Designed and continuous health-care management after transplantation is needed for kidney donors.

A clinical observation was made on 97 patients of renal calculi who were admitted to the Department of Urology, Chonam University Medical School during the 5 years period from January, 1976 to December, 1980. The following results were obtained. 1) The incidence of renal calculi in 97 patients was 38.0% of urolithiasis in 255 patients and 6.8% of 1430 inpatients. The was an increasing tendency of incidence of renal calculi with annual increasing number of inpatients. 2) There were 51 male and 46 female, a ratio of 1.1:1. The age of two thirds patients of renal calculi ranged from 31 to 50 years, with peak age incidence in the fifth decade. 3) Definite past history of urinary calculi was found in 23 cases (23.7%). 4) The clinical symptoms on admission were flank pain in 92.8%, hematuria in 15.4%, frequency in 5.1% and suprapubic pain in 4.1%. 5) Urinalysis revealed hematuria in 77.3%, proteinuria in 54.1%, pyuria in 42.3%, bacteriuria in 28.9% crystalluria in 9.3% and normal in 8.2% 6) There were 42 renal units of right renal stone and 39 renal units of left renal stone with a ratio of 1.1:1. Unilateral renal calculi were found in 81 patients (83.5%). 7) Treatment consisted of pyelolithotomy in 51 patients (52.6%), pyelonephrolithotomy in 11 patients (11.3%), nephrectomy in 4 patients (4.1%) and nephrolithotomy in 3 patients (3.1%) in order. 8) The incidence of stone ranged from 1.1 to 4.0 gm in weight was 50.6%. The mean weight of removed renal calculi was 25.8 gm in nephrectomy, 19.0 gm in pyelonephrolithotomy, 5.7 gm in nephrolithotomy and 4.9 gm in pyelolithotomy. 9) A nephrostomy tube extended into the upper ureter was located in 30 cases (30.9%) and there was no difference in duration of nephrostomy tube inlaying between pyelolithotomy and pyelonephrolithotomy. 10) Postoperative complications were observed in 22 cases (26.2%) and the most common one was remnant stones in 6 cases (27.4%), of which 5 cases had multiple stones overweighed 10.0 gm. 11) The chemical analysis of 43 renal calculi showed calcium oxalate in 14 cases (32.6%), calcium phosphate in 78 cases (16.3%), the mixed type of calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate in 6 cases (14.0%) and the mixed type of calcium oxalate and magnesium phosphate in 5 cases (11.6%).
