Authors performed 25 corneal grafts in 24 patients since the inauguration of The Central Eye Bank, attached to the Department of Ophthalmology, St. Mary's Hospital, Catholic Medical College, in April 19, 1967. Method and results of these cases are as follows; METHOD: In technique of surgery, the grafts in most of the cases were 7 mm in diameter(Table 3), in two types of penetrating and lamellar corneal grafts(Table 4). The donor material came from patient age group of 51-60 years old in most and was used within 24 hours after death (Table 5). In most cases we placed 12 interrupted sutures except of two cases for continuous suture by 8-0 virgin silks. Preoperative and postoperative cares were routine with systemic dexamethasone, 7.0mg a day was given routinely on the 5 th postoperative day for 30-50 days because of prevention of graft rejection. RESULTS AND SUMMARY: Table 7 summbrizes the results of our observation. Nineteen of the 25 grafts remained clear. And there was improved vision above 20/200 in ten eyes out of nineteen clear grafts. Table 10 lists the reasons why nine clear grafts did not improve vision. Postoperative complications occurred in fourteen grafts (Table 11). Penetrating corneal grafts for adherent leucoma courneae, staphyloma corneae and corneal scars from alkaline burn were failed to maintaining the clear graft. The donor material, the recipient cornea, graft rejection as a complication and its prevantion were discussed. PURPOSE: This study was designed to determine which sensory test best reflects the improvement of binocular function according to the surgical outcome of intermittent exotropia METHODS: We examined the visual acuity, refractive error, angle of exodeviation, fusional status with the Worth-4-dot, Bagolini tests and stereoacuity with the Titmus test preoperatively in 61 intermittent exodeviation patients who had undergone the bilateral lateral rectus recession operation from February 2002 to 2003 July. We compared the binocularity tests between the two groups: esodeviated and orthotropic or exodeviated. RESULTS: The average improvement time of the Bagolini, Worth 4 dot and Titmus tests was 0.54 +/- 1.2, 2.03 +/- 2.90, 1.12 +/- 2.1 weeks, respectively. Although the shortest time was for the Bagolini test (p=0.001), the Titmus test was more sensitive. CONCLUSIONS: The high variability of the binocularity tests should be remembered and take into account when we interpret the test results.

PURPOSE: This research was performed to investigate if the insertion site of the rectus muscle and the type of the insertion anatomically correspond for both eyes in Korean cadavers. METHODS: Thirty-four eyes from seventeen cadavers were anatomized for this research. We measured minimum distances from the insertion of each muscle to the tangential lines passing through the corneal limbus using a vernier caliper. Center, temporal, and nasal portions are used as an insertion for the vertical muscle, while center, upper, and lower portions are used as an insertion for the horizontal muscle. The average values of those minimum distances were compared for both eyes. Moreover, the type of the insertion of the rectus muscle is observed to determine whether it is identical for both eyes. RESULTS: Anatomical data does not show a significant difference between the right and left eyes except for the distance from an insertion of the inferior and lateral rectus muscle to the corneal limbus. With regard to the morphologic type of the insertion, the most common types are oblique and nonspecific shapes in the vertical muscles, and straight and concave shapes in the horizontal muscles. CONCLUSIONS: Although there was not a significant difference between the eyes, precautions should still be taken during eye operations due to possible anatomical differences between the eyes.

We reviewed eight solitary fibrous tumors occurring at sites other than pleura (three orbit, two retroperitoneum, one each hard palate, thyroid, and tongue) which shared the histologic and immunohistochemical features of solitary fibrous tumors of pleura. Six patients were women, and two were men, aged from 26 to 74 years. The tumors ranging from 1.5 to 19 cm in diameter presented as well-circumscribed, unencapsulated, soft to rubbery tissue masses. Histologically they were characterized by a proliferation of spindle or ovoid cells intervened by a dense bundles of collagen. A variety of growth patterns was identified but the so-called patternless pattern was the predominant one. One tumor exhibited highly cellular sarcomatous areas with extensive necrosis, which was diagnosed as malignant solitary fibrous tumor. Immunohistochemical studies showed that all of the tumors were strongly positive for both CD34 and vimentin, but negative for cytokeratin, S-100 protein, EMA, and desmin. One case examined ultrastructurally showed features of fibroblast. All but one showed no evidence of recurrence or metastasis over follow-up period of 14 to 32 months. We conclude that extrapleural solitary fibrous tumors represent a distinct mesenchymal tumor with variable histologic features and should be differentiated from other spindle cell mesenchymal tumors.

PURPOSE: To assess the factors which are related to recovery time from overcorrection that occurred immediately after surgery. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of intermittent exotropia patients who had undergone bilateral lateral rectus muscle recession from February 2002 to July 2004. Fifty patients who developed overcorrection of less than 20 PD on the immediate postoperative day were included in this study. Age at surgery, sex, refractive power, preoperative deviation angle, Worth 4-dot test, and stereopsis were examined, and we evaluated the correlation between these factors and recovery time. RESULTS: Thirty-six patients (72%) recovered to orthoposition within 4 weeks postoperatively. Significant correlations were found between the recovery time and poor stereopsis (p=0.02), and suppression of the Worth 4-dot test (p=0.01). There was no significant relationship between the recovery time and age at surgery, sex, refractive power, and preoperative deviation angle. CONCLUSIONS: In cases of immediate postoperative overcorrection of less than 20 PD after intermittent exotropia surgery, factors related to delayed recovery were poor stereopsis and suppression of the Worth 4-dot test.

The authors analysed statistically 223 cases of the eye injuries among 17,547 out-patients who visited to our clinic located at down-town of the city during Jan. 1965 to Sept. 1967. The incidence of the eye injuries is remarkably lower than the other reports from other communities. As far as the objects of eye injuries were concerned, ironpiece, fist and coal-dust were more frequent in 21~40 year-age group, while in under 10 year age group, knife, nail and finger-tip were more frequent. Male was exceedingly prevalent (162) than female (61). 21~30 year age group was also prevalent in regard to the incidence of the injuries.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of cancer-overcome BeHaS exercise program on shoulder joint function, stress, body image and self-esteem in women who have had surgery for breast cancer. METHOD: A non-equivalent control group pre-post test design with an experimental group (n=25) and a control group (n=25) was used. The experimental group participated in the program once a week for eight weeks. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi square and t-test with the SPSS Win 17.0. RESULTS: There were significantly increased in shoulder joint function (p=.012), body image (p=.001), and self-esteem (p=.013), and significantly decreased in stress (p=.003). CONCLUSION: The results suggest that breast cancer-overcome BeHaS exercise program had beneficial effects on shoulder joint function, body image, self-esteem and stress in patients who have had surgery for breast cancer.

Unlike volume models, surface models, which are empty three-dimensional images, have a small file size, so they can be displayed, rotated, and modified in real time. Thus, surface models of male urogenital organs can be effectively applied to an interactive computer simulation and contribute to the clinical practice of urologists. To create high-quality surface models, the urogenital organs and other neighboring structures were outlined in 464 sectioned images of the Visible Korean male using Adobe Photoshop; the outlines were interpolated on Discreet Combustion; then an almost automatic volume reconstruction followed by surface reconstruction was performed on 3D-DOCTOR. The surface models were refined and assembled in their proper positions on Maya, and a surface model was coated with actual surface texture acquired from the volume model of the structure on specially programmed software. In total, 95 surface models were prepared, particularly complete models of the urinary and genital tracts. These surface models will be distributed to encourage other investigators to develop various kinds of medical training simulations. Increasingly automated surface reconstruction technology using commercial software will enable other researchers to produce their own surface models more effectively.
