To evaluate the degree of competitive exclusion against Salmonella gallinarum(S. gallinarum) of Salmonella enteritidis(S. enteritidis) infected chickens, fifty-six, 4-week old Hyline layer suspected of S. enteritidis infection were challenged with S. gallinarum. All chickens were tested for S. enteritidis isolation using cloacal swabs and serum plate agglutination test using S. enteritidis Ag. before challenge and classified into four groups(SE isolated, SE nonisolated, SE seropositive and SE seronegative). None of the SE isolated and the SE seropositive groups died after challenge and the average weight gains were 245.5g and 254.6g, respectively. But in the SE nonisolated and the SE seronegative groups, mortality was 18.2% and 20.6% and the average weight gains were 150.1g and 111.2g. The incidence of reisolation of S. gallinarum of the SE isolated and the SE seropositive groups were 41.7% and 47.6% from liver, 33.3% and 47.6% from spleen and 8.3% and 14.3% from cecum, respectively, and the SE nonisolated and the SE seronegative group were 63.6% and 64.7% from liver, 84.1% and 88.2% from spleen and 47.7% and 52.9% from cecum. The serological response of the SE isolated and the SE seropositive groups hardly changed from 75.0 and 81.8% before challenge to 75.0 and 85.7% after. But, the other two groups were found to be significantly higher after challenge and increased from 0 and 18.2% to 100%. Consequently, S. enteritidis preinfected chickens were found to be significant different in terms of mortality, weight gain, reisolation of S. gallinarum and serological response compared to noninfected chickens. Moreover, our study shows that S. enteritidis infected chickens appear strong competitive exclusion against the colonization of S. gallinarum.

PURPOSE: To investigate the efficacy of anterior chamber paracentesis in intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide injection (IVTA). METHODS: A prospective, randomized clinical trial was conducted on 30 eyes of 30 patients undergoing IVTA. Eyes were randomly divided into two groups, those which had undergone anterior chamber paracentesis (Group 1, 15 eyes) and those which had not (Group 2, 15 eyes). We analyzed postoperative changes in intraocular pressure (IOP) in each group. RESULTS: In group 1, the mean preoperative IOP was 15.33+/-1.72 mmHg; postoperative IOP at 2 and 15 minutes was 7.80+/-1.47 and 11.73+/-1.67 mmHg, respectively. In group 2, there was significant elevation of IOP (46.73+/-8.26 mmHg) 2 minutes after the injection, although this was reduced to the normal range (16.13+/-2.61 mmHg) within 15 minutes. CONCLUSIONS: Routine anterior chamber paracentesis seems to be inappropriate considering the brief elevation in IOP that immediately follows IVTA.

To determine size and shape discrepancy between the bone of Korean women and the prostheses in total knee arthroplasty, the height(antero-posterior length) and width(medio-lateral length) of the distal femur and the proximal tibia were measured at the bone resection level for 104 knees of 62 female patients who underwent primary total knee arthroplasty and compared with the same parameters of the total knee prostheses designed by five different companies. On the condition that the height of the prostheses matched with each cases of the bone were optimal, the difference in the width was evaluated, and the criteria of the discrepancy were overhang if the width of the prosthesis was larger than bone, optimal if width of the prosthesis was same or smaller and difference was within 5 mm, and down-size if smaller and difference was over Smm. In femoral prostheses, 34.6% of all were optimal, 13.1%, overhang and 52.3%, down-size. In tibial prosthesis, 54.1% of all were optimal, 13.9%, overhang and 32%, down-size. In conclusion, although further investigation for clinical application is needed, there were discrepancies in size and shape between the femur and tibia of Korean women and total knee prostheses and improvement in design should be considered.

Background: Healing of the tendon itself is not always related to successful clinical outcomes after rotator cuff repair. It was hypothesized that certain radiologic factors affecting clinical outcomes could exist in case of the retear after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR) and the radiologic factors could help predict clinical process. The purpose of this study was to identify the radiologic factors associated with clinical outcomes of the retear after ARCR. Methods: Between January 2012 and December 2019, among patients with sufficient footprint coverage for ARCR, 96 patients with Sugaya classification 4 or higher retear on follow-up magnetic resonance imaging were included. The association between clinical outcomes such as American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score, Constant score and range of motion and radiologic variables such as initial tear dimension, retear dimension, variance of tear dimension, critical shoulder angle, acromial index, and acromiohumeral distance was analyzed. Results: Preoperatively, the ASES and Constant scores were 59.81±17.02 and 64.30±15.27, respectively. And at the last follow-up, they improved to 81.56±16.29 and 78.62±14.16, respectively (p<0.01 and p<0.01). In multiple linear regression analysis, the variance of the mediolateral dimension of tear had statistically significant association with the ASES and Constant scores (p<0.01 and p=0.01). Conclusions In patients with the retear after ARCR, the variance in the mediolateral dimension of tear had significantly negative association with the clinical outcomes. This could be considered to be reference as relative criteria and needed more sample and mechanical study

Central retinal artery occlusion occurs rarely as a complication of spine surgery in prone position, but is quite tragic. The suggested cause are hypotensive anesthesia and increased external ocular pressure by headrest, sand bag or others. We experienced a case of left central retinal artery occlusion(CRAO) after surgery of C4-5 fracture-dislocation using a horseshoe headrest and report this case.

Neuro-Behcet's disease (NBD) is rare, but it is the most serious complication of Behcet's disease, a vasculitis and multisystem inflammatory syndrome. NBD causes a variety of neurological deficits depending on the affected structure in the brain; cognitive impairment, motor weakness, ataxia, and dysphagia significantly affect functioning in independent life. Although steroid therapy usually ameliorates NBD symptoms, its therapeutic effects are limited to the chronic progressive type. In NBD patients with frequent recurrences, comprehensive rehabilitation can help to improve activities of daily living and neurological symptoms.

PURPOSE: Orthostatic proteinuria accounts for the majority of cases of proteinuria that present in childhood or adolescent. This study was conducted to see the prevalence of Nutcracker syndrome (NCS) in children with orthostatic proteinuria using venography. METHODS: Study patients consisted of 23 children with orthostatic proteinuria. The diagnosis of NCS was made by high pressure gradients (> or =4 mmHg) between left renal vein (LRV) and inferior vena cava (IVC) in left renal venography and pressure tracing. RESULTS: Of 23 study patients, the venography showed 12 cases (52%) of typical NCS. Their mean age was 11.5 years (9-14 years). Female predominance (Male:Female=2:10) was noted. In NCS group (n=12), venous pressures of IVC and LRV were 6.50+/-3.34 and 13.21+/-3.53 mmHg, respectively. This pressure gradient between two veins was 6.71+/-2.54 mmHg, which is significantly higher than that of non-NCS group (n=11), 2.17+/-0.94 mmHg (p < 0.05). No positive correlation was observed between urinary protein during 24 hour and pressure gradient (r=0.152, p=0.636). CONCLUSION: NCS may be an important cause of orthostatic proteinuria in children. The prevalence of NCS shown in this study was very similar to that in a doppler sonographic observation published previously. A larger-scale study is necessary to confirm the prevalence.
