Empathy is an essential factor for establishing therapeutic relationship. Especially for pediatric nursing, the nurses need to know how to perceive children's feeling and thought and to express her understanding about them affectively. So, empathy is considered as an important concept in pediatric nursing. This study was attempted to measure the empathic ability of pediatric nurses by pediatric nurse and mothers of hospitalized children. The subject of this study consisted of 83 pediatric nurses and 106 mothers of hospitalized children in 4 hospitals in Seoul and 1 hospital in Kyung-Gi. Data were collected from Jan. 14 to Feb. 6, 1997, by the questionnaire method. The instrument for this study was the Empathic Construct Rating Scale : ECRS(60-item, 5 point scale). Data Were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA. Result of this study are summarized as follows : 1. Pediatric nurses perceived their empathic ability to be moderately high(Mn=3.71) The level of perceived empathic ability of the pediatric nurses showed no significance by general characteristics. 2. The mothers of hospitalized children perceived nurses' empathic ability to be moderate(Mn=3.27). The level of perceived nurses' empathic ability of the mothers of hospitalized children showed significant differences by the experience of hospitalization of the children and the age of the mothers. 3. The perceived nurses' empathic ability of the mothers was significantly low than of the pediatric nurses(t=6.50, P<.001). From the above results, it can be concluded. that the empathic ability of the pediatric nurses is not sufficient for caring children and mothers efficiently. So, the pediatric nurses' empathic ability is needed to improve through facilitative relationship training as refreshment in-service education program.

PURPOSE: This study was carried out to investigate the relationships among suicidal risk, self-esteem, and spiritual well-being of high school students, and to provide basic data for developing suicide prevention programs. METHOD: The subjects of this study were 1.176 high school students from six academic high schools and two technical high schools in Daegu City. Data were collected from the 13th to the 25th of September 2004. The research tools were the Suicide Probability Scale developed by Go. Kim and Lee (2000), the Self-Esteem Inventory modified by Choi and Jeon (1993), and the tool of Spiritual Well-Being modified by Yoo (2002). Data were analyzed with SPSS Windows 11.0. RESULT: Variables that showed statistically significant difference in suicidal risk were school type, whether to have the best friends, the number of close friends, current relationship with close friends, experience of school violation, respect for the teacher, grades, financial condition, parents marital status, father's education level, mother's education level, home atmosphere, conversation with father, conversation with mother, smoking, drinking, experience of counseling for problems, whether to have physical illnesses, experience of thinking about suicide, experience of attempting suicide. Suicidal risk was in a significantly negative correlation with self-esteem and spiritual well-being. CONCLUSION: The researcher identified many different variables that affect the suicidal risk of high school students. Self-esteem and spiritual well-being were found to be in a significant correlation with suicidal risk. Therefore, the results of this study can be used as basic data and information for suicidal prevention programs.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the basal bone mineral density(BMD)s of the lumbar spine and femur of patients with endometriosis, and the changes of BMDs and biochemical bone markers after 6 months of gonadotropin releasing hormone(GnRH) agonist treatment. METHODS: The initial BMDs of 35 women with endometriosis were measured by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry at department of obstetrics & gynecology Yongsan Hospital, College of Medicine, Chung Ang University from April 1996 to May 1999. 19 patients of these group was repeatedly measured after 3.6mg subcutaneous depot injection of goserelin(Zoladex) every 4 weeks for 24 weeks. Osteocalcin and Deoxypyridinoline were measured before goserelin treatment, at 3 months, and at 6 months completion of goserelin treatment. RESULTS: Patients with endometriosis did not show the significant difference in mean BMD of lumbar spine and femur in comparison with age matched normal women. Patients treated with goserelin for 6 months showed 0.064+/-0.030g/cm2(5.56%) decrease of BMD in lumbar spine, 0.038+/-0.040g/cm2(3.85%) decrease in femur neck, 0.055+/-0.047g/cm2(6.10%) decrease in Ward triangle, 0.041+/-0.031g/cm2(5.19%) decrease in femoral trochanter. These data had statistical significance(p<0.001). At first 3 months and on completion of 6 months goserelin treatment, there were increase of 66.1%, 122.3% in serum osteocalcin respectively, and increase of 35.2%, 39.6% in urine deoxypyridinoline respectively, compared with pretreatment value. CONCLUSION: From these results, it is concluded that the BMDs of patients with endometriosis were normal, and after 6 months GnRH agonist treatment, bone loss was 3.85%-6.10%, and the values of biochemical bone markers were increased.

PURPOSE: This study is to assess the quality of life(QOL) of hematic cancer survivors after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation(HSCT) and received chemotherapy(RC) to prepare basic information for nursing interventions in order to improve the patients' QOL. METHOD: The data were collected by self-reporting questionnaire from January to March, 2003 intended for outpatients at the Cancer center of D university hospital in Busan. All 44 of them were diagnosed as hematic cancer and had spent 100 days after getting HSCT and complete remission(CR) throughout RC. The collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test. ANOVA using SPSS/WIN 10.0 program. RESULTS: The total mean score of the QOL was moderate. In case of survivors in HSCT, the total mean score of the QOL was 5.81+/-.08, and that of survivors in RC was 5.94+/-.13. The facts above has not been considered statistically as the result of analysis of differences in each domain of the QOL depending on the general characteristics of the objects of this study. CONCLUSION: The total mean score of the QOL was at moderate levels, indicating that the survivors after HSCT and RC were perceiving their QOL as moderate. In the nursing business aspect, the most important thing is to understand the QOL which the 2 groups of the survivors perceive, and the plans of nursing intervention that can be helpful to more qualitative life should be studied constantly.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the difference of change in oxygen saturation, vital signs and suction time taken for the suctioning during endotracheal suctioning performed with closed suction system and with opened suction system. METHODS: Data were collected from 31 adult patients with ventilator treatment who were admitted to a university hospital in Seoul and the collection period was from July 1 to November 15, 2005. Oxygen saturation, heart rate, respiration rate and mean arterial pressure were collected immediately prior to the suctioning intervention, during and 1 and 5 minutes after the suctioning from opened suction system and closed suction system. RESULTS: 1) The difference in oxygen saturation was statistically significant in recovery time for oxygen saturation to return to baseline values after suctioning was significantly rapid on closed suction system (p < .05). 2) The difference in heart rate, respiration rate and mean arterial pressure was statistically insignificant. 3) The suction time was shorter in closed suction system. CONCLUSION: Closed suction system is more efficient, as compared with the open suction system in the ventilator treatment.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to characterize transdifferentiated lens epithelial cells analyzed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for the expression of mRNAs encoding growth factors, growth factor receptors and pathologic extracellular matrix proteins and by Western blot analysis for the proteins encoded by these mRNAs. Moreover, after antioxidants treatment, such as Nacetyl cysteine (NAC), we observed the effect on changes in the expression of growth factors, growth factor receptors and extracellular matrix proteins. METHODS: TGF-beta treated rat lens cultured with medium 199 (Sigma Co. St. Louis, MO) was subject to RT-PCR and Western blot analysis to assess expression of mRNAs and proteins encoded by these mRNAs. RESULTS: The expression of mRNAs for TGF-beta 1, TGF-beta 2, TGF-beta 3, TGF-beta receptor, epidermal growth factor (EGF), epidermal growth factor receptor, fibroblast growth factor (FGF), fibroblast growth factor receptor and connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) were increased. The levels of type I collagen, fibronectin, and alpha-smooth muscle actin (SMA) mRNAs were also increased. However, the expression of growth factors, receptors, extracellular matrix were decreased by antioxidant, such as NAC. CONCLUSIONS: The enhanced expression of growth factors, growth factor receptors and extracellular matrix in present the molecular mechanism underlying pathogenesis of cataracts. And the suppression of growth factors and growth factor receptors with treatment of antioxidants, such as NAC, suggests the possibility of using drugs in the prevention or treatment of cataracts.
