The purpose of this study was to evalute the effect of immersion disinfection on the dimensional stability of rubber impression materials. The metallic master model was made in order to simulate the intraoral arch form. Impressions were made from four impression materials (Exaflex, Extrude, Reprosil, Impregum-F) and immersed in three disinfectant solutions (Wydex, Vi-Pon, Potadine). Casts from the impressions were measured according to the interpreparation distance. The A-B and The B-D abutment distance were compared with the control group and disinfected groups. The results were as follows; 1. The measurements of the stone cast increased relative to the master model and there was a significant difference (P<0.05). 2. The relative dimensional change of the stone cast as compared with master model ranged from 0.10% to 0.56% in the A-B distance and ranged from 0.04% to 0.27% in the B-D distance. 3. The dimensional change of the disinfected groups as compared with the control group was significantly different in the three impression materials except for Impregum-F (P<0.05). 4. The relative dimensional change of the disinfected groups compared with the control group ranged from 0% to 0.20% in the A-B distance and ranged from -0.09% to 0.11% in the B-D distance. These results suggest that immersion disinfection of rubber impression materials by chemical disinfectants causes very small dimensional change and the change is clinically acceptable for prothesis fabrication

'Num-chin syndrome', isolated mental neuropathy, is a rare manifestaion of malignant hernatologic diseases, but important sign for early diagnosis and prediction of clinical course and prognosis. Here we report 7 cases of numb-chin syndrome; one in leukemic transformation of malignant lymphoma, one in blastic crisis of chronic myelogenous leukemia and 5 in acute leukemia Two cases of acute leukemia revealed the 'numb-chin sign' in early course of disease before the diagnosis of leukemia and other three in aggravating state of acute leukemia. The therapeutic response and prognosis was poor and 5 cases expired in a few months.

PURPOSE: The purposes of this study were to apply data mining tool to nursing specific knowledge discovery process and to identify the utilization of data mining skill for clinical decision making. METHODS: Data mining based on rough set model was conducted on a large clinical data set containing NMDS elements. Randomized 1000 patient data were selected from year 1998 database which had at least one of the five most frequently used nursing diagnoses. Patient characteristics and care service characteristics including nursing diagnoses, interventions and outcomes were analyzed to derive the meaningful decision rules. RESULTS: Number of comorbidity, marital status, nursing diagnosis related to risk for infection and nursing intervention related to infection protection, and discharge status were the predictors that could determine the length of stay. Four variables (age, impaired skin integrity, pain, and discharge status) were identified as valuable predictors for nursing outcome, relived pain. Five variables (age, pain, potential for infection, marital status, and primary disease) were identified as important predictors for mortality. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated the utilization of data mining method through a large data set with stan-dardized language format to identify the contribution of nursing care to patient's health.

PURPOSE: To identify the type of disease-related stress experienced by women who received mastectomy for breast cancer using Q methodology. METHOD: Q sample included 30 statements obtained from literature and interviews with women with mastectomy. P sample consisted of 22 patients with mastectomy. The data were collected from November to December 2002 and analyzed using QUANL program. RESULT: Four types of disease-related stress experienced by women with mastectomy were found. Type 1 was manifested for a short duration following surgery and characterized by lowered self-esteem, feelings of emptiness and depression because of impaired body image. Type 2 was characterized by declined physical strength, resulting in frequent fatigue in the daily life and less intimate relationship with spouse. Type 3 was manifested by perfectionists with strong sense of self-pride who received or considered breast reconstruction surgery. Type 4 was reported by those who had long period of post-surgery. This type reported a strong sense of discomfort for wearing an artificial breast but didn't show any intention of trying breast reconstruction surgery. CONCLUSION: Women with mastectomy were found to experience different type of disease-related distress. Therefore, nurses should assess the type of stress the patient experiences following a mastectomy to provide appropriate nursing care.

OBJECTIVE: To report the successful delivery in a patient of recurrent spontaneous abortion caused by chromosomal abnormality. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Case report. RESULTS: Twelve oocytes were obtained by in vitro fertilization. Of eleven oocytes fertilized, two embryos turned out to be normal by using fluorescent in situ hybridization on blastomere biopsy. The patient succeeded in pregnancy and the result of amniocentesis was found to be normal. She delivered the healthy female baby by cesarean section. CONCLUSIONS: The successful delivery is possible in recurrent spontaneous abortion related with reciprocal translocation by using preimplantation genetic diagnosis.

We report a case of SLE with antiphospholipid antibodies presented initially with severe bleeding. A six-year-old boy was admitted due to severe nasal bleeding for 2 months. The boy showed typical malar rash. The laboratory tests indicated that his platelet count was 80,000/mm3 and the PT and the aPTT were markedly prolonged. A number of clotting factors were decreased, including factorsll<12%, Vll: 42%, lX : 38%, Xl: 41%, and Xll: 16%. Urinalysis showed hematuria and proteinuria, and 24-hour urine protein was 1.37g/day. Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) test was false positive, Coombs test, lupus anticoagulants and anticardiolipin antibodies (IgG and IgM) were positive. His symptoms and laboratory tests fulfilled the criteria of SLE with antiphospholipid antibody. Renal pathology showed lupus nepritis (diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis, class lV). After steroid therapy, his nasal bleeding stopped immediately, and laboratory findings became normalized. This case showed the tendency of paradoxic bleeding, instead of the expected thrombosis which can be found in this type of patient. We anticipate it is mainly due to pronounced prothrombin deficiency.

As flow cytometric analysis using paraffin-embedded tissue was developed by Hedley et al in 1983, retrospective study with large amount of archival material was possible. Many literatures reported that the result of paraffin embedded tissue was compatible with that of fresh tissue. We compared the DNA histograms of 26 cases of colorectal adenocarcinoma in which the analysis was done in both fresh and paraffin-embedded tissues. Aneuploidy in fresh and paraffin-embed-ded tissues was 73.0% and 50.0%, respectively. The concordance rate of fresh and paraffin-em-bedded tissues was 76.8% and six interpreters were agreed in 73.0% of the cases. Because flow cytometric DNA analysis using fresh tissues can detect more aneuploid population than in paraffin-embedded tissue, the former is strongly recommeded in DNA ploidy study. Also careful observation using standard criteria may improve the interpretation of DNA histogram.
