Visual acuity refers to the spatial limit of visual discrimination. It is surely the single most significant measure of functional integrity of the eye. Normal visual acuity can be represented in hyperopia of less than 2 diopters or astigmatism of less than 1 diopter. The purpose of this study was to observe the prevalence, type and degree of of refractive errors in 338 eyes of 40-69 years of age with normal visual acuity(20/20 or more). The results were as follows: 1. In objective manifest refraction, 246 eyes(72.8%) had refractive error such as hyperopia(110 eyes), simple hyperopic astgmatism(61 eyes),compound hyperopic astigmatism(57 eyes) and simple myopic astigmatism(18 eyes). 2. In subjective manifest refraction, 132 eyes(39.1%) had refractive error such as hyperopia(51 eyes), simple hyperopic astigmatism(44 eyes), simple myopic astigmatism(24 eyes) and compound hyperopic astigmatism(13 eyes). 3. As to the type of astigmatism, 71 of 81 astigmatism were "against the rule" and the rest(10 eyes) "with the rule". Degree of astigmatism was less than 1.00 diopter. 4. A verage degree of refractive errors was 0.43 diopter.

This is a clinical study of 129 cases of colorectal cancer who were treated in the department of surgery, Inchon Christian Hospital from January 1989 to December 1996. The results were as follows; 1) The peak age incidence was 7th decade and the ratio between male and female was 1.87 : 1 2) The most frequent site of the tumor was the rectum(59.7%). 3) In the right and left colon cancer the most frequent symptom was abdominal pain and in the rectal cancer the most frequent symptom was bloody stool. 4) The duration of symptoms prior to admission was within 3months(58%). 5) The diagnostic methods were digital examination, sigmoidoscopy colonofiberscopy, barium enema and abdominal CT scanning. 6) The most frequently performed operation was Abdominoperineal resection(27%). 7) The staging of tumors was performed according to modified Dukes' classification and Dukes C was most frequent(55.1%). 8) The most common histopathologic type was adenocarcinoma(98%). 9) The most common macroscopic finding was ulcerative pattern. 10) The most common distant metastatic site was pelvic organ(12%). 11) The most common post-operative complication was wound infection(10.1%). 12) The 5year survival rate was analyzed by Kaplan-Meier's method : the overall 5year survival rate was 60.7%.

Due to the instability of intertrochanteric fractures in elderly patients, various methods of reduction and fixation were introduced to obtain stable reduction and solid union, But there have been many controversies regarding advantages between anatomical reduction group and non-anatomical reduction group. The authors analyzed the 68 unstable intertrochanteric fractures out of total 94 cases of intertrochanteric fractures treated from Jan. 1988 to Jan. 1994 with mean follow-up 17 months and evaluated the radiologic and clinical results between those two groups. The results were obtained as follows: 1. The most common cause was low energy injury and according to the Tronzo classification, the type III was most common in 54 cases (79.4%). 2. The average union time was 14.0wks (84%), the union rate was low in the medialized reduction group(A-P) and anterior displaced reduction group(A-P), anterior displaced and anatomical reduction groups(Lateral). 3. The compression length more than 10mm of lag screw was deep in medialized reduction group(A-P), another displaced and anatomical reduction groups(Lateral). 4. The average length of lag screw sliding was 9.2mm and depth sliding of 6.8mm (74%) was occurred within immediate postoperative 1 month.
