Kaposi's sarcoma was first descrided by Kaposi in 1872 as an idiopathic multiple hemorrhagic sarcoma. Its clinical features revealed to be erythematous red or purple macule started out, and developing into palpable dome-shaped nodules. Etiology is not defined to detail at present. Kaposi's sarcoma is classified to 4 categories; Classical, African, Epidemic and Transplant type. Epidemic or AIDS categories is found approximately 20 % of all AIDS and has strong predilection for head and neck region. The first case of Kaposi's sarcoma observed in patients with kidney transplants was reported in 1969. Kaposi's sarcoma now accounts for 5% of all tumors associated with transplanted patients and alteration of the immunosuppression may have played a key role in these recipients. The most common site of Kaposi's sarcoma in transplanted patients are extremities but rare in head and neck area. We report a case of Kaposi's sarcoma on the hard palate in the kidney transplantation patient.

3.The Effect of Polytetrafluoroethylene on Delayed Adjustable Strabismus Surgery.
Jeong Min HWANG ; Bong Leen CHANG
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1996;37(3):517-523
Delayed reattachment of the muscle to the sclera may be desirable to correct the deviation of eye developed after the surgery. Polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) was placed around the cut end of the muscle as a physical barrier between the free muscle end and the sclera in 16 rabbits in order to prevent the postoperative adhesions. PTFE was effective in delaying the adjustment for up to 4 weeks after surgery in 4 out of 10 eyes. After removal of PTFE, adjustment was possible up to 12 weeks in 24 out of 25 eyes because there was no adhesion between the muscle and PTFE. In conclusion, PTFE may be clinically helpful for delaying the timing of adjustment.

5.The Effect of Physical Barriers on Delayed Adjustable Strabismus Surgery.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1996;37(4):675-684
Delayed reattachment of the muscle to the sclera may be desirable to correct the angle of deviation developed after the surgery of strabismus. In order to know the possible time for the delayed adjustment, the authors tried Viscoat(R). Interceed(TC7) and polyglactin 910 mesh(Vicryl mesh(R)) as physical barriers for preventing the formation of postoperative adhesions. These materials were placed around between the detached end of the muscle and the sclera in 29 rabbits and adjustment was performed thereafter. Viscoat(R) was effective in delaying the adjustment up to 6 days after surgery. Interceed(TC7) and polyglactin 910 mesh were effective in delaying the adjustment up to 1 week after surgery.

6.Clinical Manifestations of Lebers Here ditary Optic Neuropathy with 11778 mitochondrial DNA Mutation in Koreans.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 2000;41(8):1775-1781
Lebers hereditary optic neuropathy(LHON)is caused by a single nucleotide change in the mitochondrial deoxynucleic acid(mtDNA)and accounts for 30% of bilateral optic atrophy of unknown etiology. In order to define the clinical features of LHON associated with the 11778 mtDNA mutation, clinical and historical data were collected from 60 visually symptomatic patients with the molecularly confirmed mtDNA 11778 mutation. Forty-nine(82%)of the 60 patients were male. Onset of visual loss was between 6 and 63 years of age. Worst visual acuity ranged from light perception to 0.8. In most patients, visual acuities deteriorated to worse than 0.1 and remained at that level. Final visual acuities ranged from light perception to 1.2.Five(8.3%)out of 60 patients showed improvement of visual acuity up to 0.5 or better in at least one eye. Ishihara test revealed severe color vision impairment in most patients. Optic atrophy was the most common ophthalmoscopic finding. However, increased C/D ratio or normal disc was also observed. Central scotoma was the most frequent visual field defect, but normal visual field was also found. LHON should be considered in the differential diagnosis of optic neuropathy in a young man with visual and color deterioration as well as with a central scotoma. However, various phenotypes also exist in an atypical LHON case.

Journal of the Korean Surgical Society 2011;81(Suppl 1):S47-S50
Torsion of a mucocele of the vermiform appendix is an extremely rare condition and also a rare cause of an acute abdomen with a clinical presentation that is indistinguishable from acute appendicitis, and thus, the condition is diagnosed during operation. Here, the authors describe the case of a 78-year-old female, who presented with intermittent abdominal pain. The appendix had a pelvic position and the torsion was counterclockwise. In addition, the torsion was associated with mucocele of the appendix, which was considered a secondary factor of torsion. Appendectomy and drainage were performed.
