Malaysian Journal of Medical Sciences 2017;24(1):113-116
Paraneoplastic neurological disorder (PND) is a condition due to immune cross-reactivity
between the tumour cells and the normal tissue, whereby the “onconeural” antibodies attack the
normal host nervous system. It can present within weeks to months before or after the diagnosis
of malignancies. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is associated with paraneoplastic syndrome, for
example, dermatomyositis, and rarely with a neurological disorder. We report on a case of
nasopharyngeal carcinoma with probable PND. Otolaryngologists, oncologists and neurologists
need to be aware of this condition in order to make an accurate diagnosis and to provide prompt
treatment.

Journal of Practical Radiology 2001;0(09):-
Objective To investigate the clinical effect and Practical value of percutaneous vertebroplasty using China-made bone cement. Methods Under CT or C-arm X-ray machine guided, 22 cases with vertebral osteoporotic compression fracture, hemangeoma orosteolytic carcinoma were treated by perfusion of China-made bone cement through percutaneous puncture. Results Thirty vertebraes in 22 cases were operated by percutaneous vertebroplasty and the successful rate was 100%. The symptoms in 21 cases were remarkably released, the clinical effective rate was 95.5%. During the operation, bone cement leakage occurred in 23.3% of the treated vertebrae, but no serious untoward effect appeared. Conclusion The application of China-made bone cement in percutaneous vertebroplasty is of the features of minimal invasion, safty and remarkable curative effect. It can release pain and consolidate the vertebrae.

An intraosseous epidermal cyst is a rare benign cystic lesion. It is thought to result from congenital factors or trauma and can lead to bone destruction because the cyst develops at the soft tissue around the bone. Radiological findings of intraosseous epidermal cysts are a well-defined radiolucent lesion, with cortical expansion. It is important to differentiate an intraosseous epidermal cyst with other disease developed at distal phalanx because its clinical and radiological findings are similar. We report two rare cases of intraosseous epidermal cysts that developed at the distal phalanx.

The Medical Journal of Malaysia 2014;69(1):9-12
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of
sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in β-thalassaemia
patients treated with Desferrioxamine (DFO) and determine
the correlation of SNHL with average daily DFO dosage,
serum ferritin level and Therapeutic index (T.I).
Methods: This is a cross sectional descriptive study carried
out for a period of 14 months and 54 patients were recruited.
The recruited patients are transfusion dependant β-
thalassaemia patient aged 3 years and above treated with
DFO. An interview, clinical examination and hearing
assessment, which included tympanogram, and Pure Tone
Audiometry (PTA) or behaviour alaudiometry were performed.
The data on age started on DFO, average daily DFO, duration
of DFO intake, serum ferritin past 1 year and Therapeutic
Index (T.I) were obtained from patients’ case notes.
Results: The prevalence of SNHL was 57.4% and majority
has mild hearing loss (93.6%). Fourteen patients (25.9%)
have bilateral ear involvement and as many as 17 patients
(31.5%) have SNHL in either ear. A total of 23 patients (42.6%)
have normal hearing level. Although the prevalence of SNHL
was 57.4%, only a small percentage of the patient noticed
and complained of hearing loss (11.1%). There is no
association between age started on DFO, average daily DFO
and duration of DFO intake with normal hearing group and
those patients with SNHL. Positive correlation was seen
between average daily DFO with 2000 and 4000Hz on PTA in
the left ear and between serum ferritin level past 1 year with
4000 and 8000Hz in the right ear and 8000Hz in the left ear.
No significant correlation was seen between T.I on PTA.
Conclusion: The prevalence of SNHL from hearing
assessment is high in β-thalassaemia patients in this study.
However, it is manifested clinically in a smaller percentage.
We suggest a baseline hearing assessment should be
carried on all β-thalassaemia patients prior to DFO chelation
therapy.
7.Correlation between Serum Levels of Hcy,Cys C and Cognitive Impairmentin Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease
Journal of Modern Laboratory Medicine 2018;33(2):70-73
Objective To investigate the correlation between serum levels of homocystein (Hcy),Cystatin C (Cys C)and cognitive impairment in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).Methods 78 patients with CKD from January 2016 to May 2017 in Hanzhong People's Hospital in Shaanxi were enrolled for the study and divided into stage 3 groups (n 27),stage 4 group (n=28) and stage 5 group (n =23) according to stage of CKD.Montreal cognitive assessment scale (MoCA) was performed to evaluate the cognitive level of patients, and they were divided into cognitive impairment group and normal group.Serum levels of Hcy,Cys C,creatinine (SCr) and urea nitrogen (BUN) were compared among groups, and the correlation between them and cognitive level was analyzed. Results ①Serum levels of Hcy,Cys C,SCr and BUN in stage 3 group were significantly lower than that in stage 4 and 5 group, and these indexes in stage 4 group were significantly lower than that in stage 5 group (F=19.221~66.539,all P<0.05).The score of MoCA in stage 3 group was significantly lower than that in stage 5 group, and the incidence of cognitive impairment was significantly higher than that in stage 5 group (F/x2 =3.993~6.358,all P<0.05).②The serum levels of Hcy,Cys C,SCr and BUN in cognitive impairment group were significantly higher than in normal group (t =2.198 ~ 3.835,all P< 0.05).③ Pearson analysis result showed that MoCA score was negatively correlated with serum Hcy,Cys C and SCr (r=-0.370,-0.392,-0.253,P<0.05),but there was no sig nificant correlation between score and BUN (r=-0.211,P>0.05).④For prediction of cognitive impairment, area under the receiver operating curve of serum levels of Hcy,Cys C,SCr and BUN were 0.818,0853,0.751 and 0.709 (P<0.05).Conclusion Serum levels of Hcy,Cys C were significantly negatively correlated with cognitive function in patients with CKD,whose predictive value were higher than that ot traditional renal function indexes such as SCr and BUN.

Chinese journal of integrative medicine 2014;20(2):136-147
OBJECTIVETo critically evaluate the currently available randomized clinical trials regarding the effectiveness of acupuncture in palliative care for cancer patients, hence, to provide sufficient evidences for the widespread use of acupuncture in cancer treatment.
METHODSTwo independent reviewers extracted data from all of the randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that assessed the efficacy of acupuncture in palliative care for cancer patients. Seven databases were searched from their respective inception to December 2010. All eligible trials identified were evaluated by two independent reviewers using the Jadad scale, and data from the articles were validated and extracted.
RESULTSIn total, 33 RCTs met the inclusion criteria. The effects of acupuncture on different cancer-related aspects were shown, including chemotherapy or radiotherapy-induced side effects (13/33, 39.4%), cancer pain (6/33, 18.2%), post-operative urinary retention (4/33, 12.1%), quality of life (2/33, 6.1%), vasomotor syndrome (2/33, 6.1%), post-operative gastrointestinal dysfunction (2/33, 6.1%), prevention of prolonged postoperative ileus (2/33, 6.1%), joint symptoms (1/33, 3.0%), and immunomodulation (1/33, 3.0%).
CONCLUSIONSThe result of our systematic review suggested that the effectiveness of acupuncture in palliative care for cancer patients is promising, especially in reducing chemotherapy or radiotherapyinduced side effects and cancer pain. Acupuncture may be an appropriate adjunctive treatment for palliative care.

Journal of the Korean Radiological Society 1993;29(1):104-110
Sclerosing hemangiomas are rare benign neoplasms in pulmonary parenchyme, We analyzed CT findings of two cases of sclerosing hemangiomas of the lung in two adult females. Chest radiograph showed well-circumscuribed, round soft tissue mass with calcification in right lower lobe of one patient and without calcification and moderate or marked contrast enhancement was clearly demonstrated with CT scan. CT findings of contratst enhancement and contour of calcification allow differentiation of sclerosing hemangioma from other venign neoplasms or postinflammotory pseudotusrs of the lung.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 2015;56(11):1817-1820
PURPOSE: We report a rare case of ocular siderosis with delayed-onset secondary glaucoma occurring 10 years after cataract and iron foreign body removal. CASE SUMMARY: A 47-year-old male who suffered an ocular injury with an iron material to his left eye 3 years prior to his initial visit was treated in our clinic for a cataract with siderosis lentis. Ten years after he underwent cataract surgery he developed secondary open-angle glaucoma. Trabecular block taken during trabeculectomy showed no iron material, however, a fibrosclerotic change was observed. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with a history of traumatic siderosis lentis, a potential risk of siderosis remains for a long period.
