The Korean Journal of Nutrition 2003;36(8):859-869
The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of soup temperature on hunger, energy, and nutrient intake. The hot meal consisted of 400 g of hot beef-vegetable soup (75 degrees C), Yubu Chobap, Bulgogi, cucumber pickle and radish pickle. The cold meal component were the same as the hot meal except 300 g of water (8 degrees C) and boiled vegctables (100 g), instead of the hot beef-vegetable soup ot the hot meal. Thirst, core temperature and blood pressure were also measured before and after consumption the test meals in a within-subjects, repeated measures design. 30 women consumed 17% more kilocalories, 13% more protein and lipid and 16% more carbohydrate in the cold meal than in the hot meal. The core temperature at the end of the test meal was higher in the hot meal than in the cold meal. Energy and nutrient intake were inversely correlated with the hunger scores within 1 hour after the hot meal, however those are not related with each other in the cold meal. So hunger feeling might be disturbed in the cold meal. It is concluded that energy and nutrient consumptions were higher in the cold meal, partly because of the distrubed hunger feeling in the cold meal.

The Korean Journal of Nutrition 2003;36(8):870-881
We examined the effects of 5 g red pepper powder in soup preload given at breakfast on food intake, blood pressure, body core temperature, hunger, fullness and thirst scores in 29 female collage students. All subjects received two kind of soup preloads in random order. After ingesting a soup, subjects ate other food items as a breakfast ad libitum. Two soups were of the same composition and volume but differed only in 5 g red pepper. So one soup designated as "beef-vegetable" and the other soup designated as "red pepper". Red pepper soup consumption significantly enhanced energy and macronutrient intake by 17%. The hunger scores after test meals were inversely correlated with energy and nutrient intake in beef-vegetable meal. However, the postprandial hunger scores were not correlated with energy and nutrient intakes in red pepper meal. The fullness scores at 90 min after the red pepper meal were inversely correlated with energy and nutrient intake whereas the fullness scores after beef-vegetable meal were not correlated with energy and nutrient intake. These results suggest that hot red pepper ingestion may desensitize some gastrointestinal vagal afferents and disturb feeling of hunger and fullness. The postprandial changes of body temperatures in red pepper meal were higher for a longer time in comparison with those in beef-vegetable meal. For the red pepper meal there frequently were higher correlations between blood pressures and anthropometric measurements, compared to those in beef-vegetable meal. These results might be explained partly by the enhancing effects of capsaicin on thermogenesis and sympathetic nervous system activity. It is concluded that the ingestion of spicy soup with red pepper can increase appetite, energy and nutrient intakes in Korean females, and this effect might be related to disturbed feeling of hunger and fullness.hunger and fullness.

Korean Journal of Clinical Microbiology 2010;13(1):47-50
Mycoplasma hominis is a commensal organism in the genitourinary tract. Extragenital infections by M. hominis are rare, and its occurrence is usually limited to immunocompromised patients. Here we report two patients with extragenital infection by M. hominis. The first patient, a woman with angioimmunoblastic T cell lymphoma, underwent autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation. The second patient, a woman with endometrial cancer, received laparoscopically-assisted vaginal hysterectomy. They both presented with septic symptoms, including fever, and M. hominis was isolated from pleural effusion and ascitic fluid, respectively. We are reporting these two cases of extragenital infection by M. hominis with a literature review to emphasize that the rapid isolation of M. hominis with early treatment can lead to a better prognosis.

Korean Journal of Medicine 2016;90(3):262-265
Chikungunya infection is caused by an arbovirus transmitted by the Aedes mosquito. A 19-year-old man who had traveled to the Republic of Surinam to perform volunteer work complained of a fever, arthralgia, articular stiffness, and a skin rash on both the arm and trunk. Chikungunya fever was diagnosed using a Chikungunya virus specific IgM antibody in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using blood samples obtained during follow-up visits. In this report, we describe a case of imported Chikungunya fever that presented with arthralgia and a skin rash, with islands of normal skin, that occurred following travel to Surinam, South America.

Journal of the Korean Academy of Family Medicine 1999;20(4):336-344
BACKGROUND: The expansion and strengthening of primary care is approved as the only method to revise the ineffective health care system in Korea. In such a system, we intended to analyze the functional and regianal distribution of specialists by investigating and classifying the hospitals where residents who completed their training in a university hospital located in Seoul for seven years are working and by acquiring the distribution of the subjects who are practicing as primary care physicians by year, specialties and location. METHODS: We selected 384 specialists, all of whom were trained as residents at a university hospital located in Seoul from 1987 to 1993. The hospitals they worked at were classified as primary, secondary and tertiary care hospitals according to the classification in the health care administration. The location of primary care hcspitals among them was plotted an two maps; one of Seoul, the other of Korea. RESULTS: The number of females in the subjects was 68(17.7%) and that of males 316(82.3%). The number of practitianers was 156(40.6%) and that of specialists working at the secondary care hospitals was 55(14.3%), and 147 specialists were working at the tertiary care hospitals(38.3%). With regard to the pereentage of practitioners, dermatologic specialists presented with 60%, and relatively high group included obstetrics and gynecology(59.2%), family medicine(54.5%), plastic surgery(52.6%), otolaryngology (52.0%), pediatrics(51.7%), and orthopedics(48.6%).In tertiary care hospital, chest surgery showed 72.7% as highest. Radiologic ancology presented with 66.7% and anatamical pathology with 66.7%. As to the location of primary care hospitals, 41.0% were in Seoul and 38.5% in Kyungkido. And the rest of the 20. 5% were located in other areas of Korea. CONCLUSIONS: Considering the results of the study that show a great number of specialists are actually practicing as primary care physicians after their specialists training, the present training system of specialists needs to be revised and cantrolled in structure.

Obstetrics & Gynecology Science 2013;56(4):242-248
OBJECTIVE: To find factors associated with dysmenorrhea, we surveyed the obstetric and gynecologic histories as well as socioeconomic factors of Vietnamese female residents in Can Tho (southern part of Vietnam) and Bavi (northern part of Vietnam) and Vietnamese female marriage immigrants living in South Korea. METHODS: From March 2010 to March 2011, 3,017 Vietnamese women aged 17 to 42 years (mean, 25.5 years) were recruited. Socioeconomic factors as well as baseline characteristics, including gynecologic history and menstrual patterns, were collected using questionnaires. The relationships between these factors and dysmenorrhea were analyzed using chi-square test, independent t-test and logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Dysmenorrhea was found in 58.8% of all women. The mean age and the age at menarche were younger in the women with dysmenorrhea. A longer duration of menstrual flow and severe menstrual volume increased the risk of dysmenorrhea. The prevalence of dysmenorrhea was lower in women who had experienced pregnancy, term delivery and breastfeeding. The prevalence of dysmenorrhea in Vietnamese women was also different according to their educational status. When participants were divided according to their religious preferences, atheist women showed a lower prevalence with 55%, and women who were religious had a higher prevalence of dysmenorrhea. The body mass index, menstrual cycle length, monthly income, and duration of residency in Korea were not related with the prevalence of dysmenorrhea. CONCLUSION: Socioeconomic factors as well as age, menstrual pattern and obstetric history were related with dysmenorrhea in Vietnamese women.

To evaluate the induction of preneoplastic hepatic foci in relation to natural killer cell (NK) activity, we sequentially analyzed glutathione S-transferase placental form positive (GST-P+) hepatocytes and NK activity during diethylnitrosamine (DEN) and phenobarbital (PB)-induced hepatocarcinogenesis in Sprague-Dawley rats. Previous studies have shown that NK activity can modulate the carcinogenic process induced by chemical carcinogens. Newborn females were initially given a single intraperitoneal injection of 15 mg DEN/kg and three weeks later, they were treated with 500 ppm phenobarbital (PB). From week 3, PB was administered in drinking water for 9 weeks. Interim and terminal sacrifices were performed at weeks 12, 15 and 30. GST-P+ hepatocytes increased with age in DEN-treated rats, especially in the population of more than two GST-P+ hepatocytes. The NK activity of DEN-treated rats did not significantly differ from that of control rats until week 12, but it progressively decreased from week 15 to 30. These results indicate that changes of NK activity inversely correlated with the induction of preneoplastic hepatic foci. This strong correlation of decreased NK activity with enhanced induction of GST-P+ foci suggests that NK activity is important in the early progression of hepatocarcinogenesis in rats.

Journal of Bone Metabolism 2015;22(2):83-86
Osteomesopyknosis is a rare sclerosing bone disorder of autosomal dominant inheritance. We report a first case of osteomesopyknosis in Korea. A 16-year old girl complained of diffuse back pain for 1 year. We performed physical examination, biochemical investigations and imaging studies. A radiograph of spine revealed rugger-jersey vertebra and sandwich vertebra. Bone specific alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin and C-terminal telopeptides of type I collagen were normal. Only an axial skeleton involvement was shown on the whole body bone scan. This patient was diagnosed to have osteomesopyknosis. Osteomesopyknosis is characterized by normal level of bone turnover marker and an axial bone involvement. Osteomesopyknosis can be occurred in Korea and needs to be considered when patients, especially young patients, suffer from back pain and have only axial osteosclerosis.
