1.Development of Empowerment Program for Persons with Chronic Mental Illness and Evaluation of Impact.

PURPOSE: This study was done to develop an empowerment program for people with chronic mental illness and to analyze effects of the program on level of empowerment. METHODS: The research was conducted using a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Participants were 37 people with chronic mental illness (experimental group: 18, control group: 19). The empowerment program was provided for 8 weeks (15 sessions). Data were collected between July 21 and October 17, 2014. Data were analyzed using Chi-square, Fisher's exact test, Sapiro-wilk test, and Repeated measure ANOVA with SPSS/WIN 18.0. RESULTS: Quantitative results show that self-efficacy, interpersonal relationships, attitudes in the workplace, occupational performance capacity, and levels of empowered execute were significantly better in the experimental group compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: Study findings indicate that this empowerment program for persons with chronic mental illness is effective for improving self efficacy, interpersonal skills, attitudes in the workplace, occupational performance capacity, levels of empowered execute.

2.A Case of Eruptive Hair Cyst Developed on the Eyelid.

PURPOSE: Eruptive vellus hair cysts (EVHC) are benign lesions that affect the pediatric population and are rarely seen congenitally or in young adults. EVHCs are small, cystic papules that usually occur on the chest and proximal extremities. EVHCs of the eyelids have been reported infrequently. We experienced a case of solitary EVHC that developed on the eyelid in a middle-aged male. Herein, we present our case with a brief review of the literature. CASE SUMMARY: A 44-year-old male presented with a history of an asymptomatic, palpable mass in the right upper eyelid that had been slowly growing for 2 years. Physical examination revealed non-tender, firm and round mass in right upper eyelid. Computed tomography scan of the orbit showed a 7.0 x 9.0 x 9.5 mm-sized focal bulging contour in the right upper eyelid. The patient underwent sub-brow incision and excisional biopsy of the eyelid mass. Histopathological examination revealed a 7.0 x 6.0 x 4.0 mm-sized cystic structure lined by squamous epithelium containing laminated keratinous materials and multiple vellus hair shafts. There was no local recurrence during the postoperative follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: We experienced a rare case of EVHC that developed on the eyelid. Based on our experience, EVHC should be considered when determining an eyelid mass, especially around hair follicles.

3.Alginate/PEI/DNA polyplexes: a new gene delivery system

Aim To avoid the limitation of the use of cationic polyethlenimine (PEI)-complexed plasmid DNA use for in vitro or in vivo gene delivery due to its cytotoxicity and lower efficiency in the presence of serum. Methods A polyplex with decreased positive charge on the complex surface was designed. The PEI/DNA (PD) complexes coated with an anionic biodegradable polymer, alginate were prepared and their gene delivery behavior with PD was compared. Results The alginate-coated PD polyplex, where alginate: PEI: DNA [alginate: DNA, 0. 15 (w/w); PEI: DNA, N: P = 10] showed about 10 -30 fold-increased transfection efficiency compared to corresponding non-coated complexes to C3 cells in the presence of 50% serum. The surface charge of the alginate-coated complex was approximately half of that of the alginate-lacking complex. The size of alginate-coated complex was slightly smaller than that of the corresponding complex without alginate. The former complex also showed a reduced erythrocyte aggregation activity and decreased cytotoxicities to C3 cells in comparison with PD complex. Conclusion The alginate-coated PD polyplexes as a new gene delivery system can improve transfection efficiency in high serum concentration with low cytotoxicity to C3 cells.
4.Effects of an Infant/Toddler Health Program on Parenting Knowledge, Behavior, Confidence, and Home Environment in Low-income Mothers.

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a mother/infant-toddler health program developed to enhance parenting knowledge, behavior and confidence in low income mothers and home environment. METHODS: A one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design was used. Sixty-nine dyads of mothers and infant-toddlers (aged 0-36 months) were provided with weekly intervention for seven session. Each session consisted of three parts; first, educating to increase integrated knowledge related to the development of the infant/toddler including nutrition, first aid and home environment; second, counseling to share parenting experience among the mothers and to increase their nurturing confidence; third, playing with the infant/toddler to facilitate attachment-based parenting behavior for the mothers. RESULTS: Following the programs, there were significant increases in parenting knowledge on nutrition and first aid. A significant improvement was found in attachment-based parenting behavior, but not in home safety practice. Nurturing confidence was not significantly increased. The program led to more positive home environment for infant/toddler's health and development. CONCLUSION: The findings provide evidence for mother-infant/toddler health program to improve parenting knowledge, attachment-based parenting behavior and better home environment in low income mothers. Study of the long term effectiveness of this program is recommended for future research.

5.A Case of Eyelid Desmoplastic Trichilemmoma

PURPOSE: Desmoplastic trichilemmoma is a rare variant of trichilemmoma first described in 1990. Desmoplastic trichilemmoma on the eyelid has not been previously reported in Korea. We report our experience with a case of desmoplastic trichilemmoma of the eyelid. CASE SUMMARY: A 72-year-old male patient presented with a round mass on the upper eyelid, which was noticed 1 year prior and caused irritation and itching. Excisional biopsy of the mass was performed. Histopathological examination revealed findings suggestive of a desmoplastic trichilemmoma. There was no local recurrence during the 2-year follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Desmoplastic trichilemmoma should be considered when determining the type of eyelid mass.

6.Apocrine Hidrocystoma Presenting as a Lacrimal Gland Mass

Purpose:
To report a case of apocrine hidrocystoma in the lacrimal gland.Case summary: A 51-year-old woman presented with a left upper eyelid mass that occurred two years before presenting tohospital. Upon physical examination, a painless palpable mass on the left upper eyelid was observed. Based on slit-lamp examination,a pinkish mass with a well-circumscribed border on the left upper temporal conjunctiva was observed. Orbital computedtomography showed a well-defined contrast enhanced mass of 8 × 9 × 9 mm in the lacrimal lesion. The mass was removed completelyunder local anesthesia. Biopsy confirmed that the mass was an apocrine hidrocystoma. There was no recurrence at oneyear postoperatively.
Conclusions
This is the first report of an apocrine hidrocystoma in a lacrimal lesion in Korea. Apocrine hidrocystoma is rarelyfound on lacrimal gland lesions, but it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a lacrimal gland mass.
7.Impact of Cognitive Aging on Health-Related Quality of Life in Menopausal Women

Menopause is a well-known risk factor for accelerating cognitive aging in women. This study aimed to assess differences in cognitive function and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) according to menopausal status to determine whether the menopause significantly affects the relationship between cognitive function and HRQOL. This was a cross-sectional comparative study with a convenience sample of 178 Korean women including 89 naturally menopausal women (65 ± 10 years) and 89 non-menopausal women (45 ± 8 years) who met the eligibility criteria and completed neuropsychological tests and self-report questionnaires about their HRQOL, cognitive function, depression, and sleep quality. Multiple regression analyses were performed within and between groups according to menopausal status. Menopausal women had significantly worse scores on neuropsychological performance and HRQOL than non-menopausal women. A better neuropsychological performance (β = 0.34) was solely associated with a better HRQOL in menopausal women, whilst socioeconomic variables were associated with HRQOL in non-menopausal women. Menopause is an important risk factor for HRQOL, and the association between cognition and HRQOL may differ according to menopausal status. When developing programs for target groups to improve daily functioning and HRQOL, healthcare professionals need to pay more attention to this relationship.
8.Gene Therapy for Huntington’s Disease: The Final Strategy for a Cure?

Huntington’s disease (HD) has become a target of the first clinical trials for gene therapy among movement disorders with a genetic origin. More than 100 clinical trials regarding HD have been tried, but all failed, although there were some improvements limited to symptomatic support. Compared to other neurogenetic disorders, HD is known to have a single genetic target. Thus, this is an advantage and its cure is more feasible than any other movement disorder with heterogeneous genetic causes. In this review paper, the authors attempt to cover the characteristics of HD itself while providing an overview of the gene transfer methods currently being researched, and will introduce an experimental trial with a preclinical model of HD followed by an update on the ongoing clinical trials for patients with HD.
9.The experiences of depressed pregnant women participating in a cognitive behavioral therapy program via video communication: an exploratory qualitative study

This study explored the experiences of pregnant women with depressed mood participating ina group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) program using video communication, based on Beck’s cognitive theory.Methods: The participants were six pregnant women out of 13 women who had participated in an 8-session group CBT program using video communication for women with depressed mood (EdinburghPostnatal Depression score of ≥9). Data were collected from February 20 through March 25, 2021. Indepth individual interviews were conducted through a video conferencing platform at 1 month post-baseline. Thematic analysis was done.Results: Three themes, 10 subthemes, and 38 concepts were derived from experiences of participating inthe 4-week group CBT program (twice a week). The first theme, entitled “continuing realization” hadsubthemes of “a negative and instable self,” “a selfish judgment that excludes others,” and “a strong beliefin self-control.” The second theme, entitled “attempt to change for restoration” had subthemes of “shift torational thinking,” “freedom from suppressed beliefs,” “tolerance of other people,” and “courage for self-expression.” The third theme, entitled “departure for a positive life,” had subthemes of “emotional healing,”“faith in oneself,” and “reestablishing the criteria for happiness.”Conclusion: Pregnant women with depressed mood expressed that continuing realizations and attemptsto change supported their transition toward a positive direction of healing. Thus, they were able to changetheir distorted thinking into rational thinking through CBT using video communication. These findingssupport the use of group CBT using video communication with pregnant women who have depressedmood.
10.Iris Koreana NAKAI Inhibits Osteoclast Formation via p38-Mediated Nuclear Factor of Activated T Cells 1 Signaling Pathway

Background:
Iris Koreana NAKAI (IKN) is a flowering perennial plant that belongs to the Iridaceae family. In this study, we aimed to demonstrate the effects of IKN on osteoclast differentiation in vitro and in vivo. We also sought to verify the molecular mechanisms underlying its anti-osteoclastogenic effects.
Methods:
Osteoclasts were formed by culturing mouse bone marrow macrophage (BMM) cells with macrophage colony-stimulating factor and receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL). Bone resorption assays were performed on dentin slices. mRNA expression levels were analyzed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Western blotting was performed to detect protein expression or activation. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced osteoclast formation was performed using a mouse calvarial model.
Results:
In BMM cultures, an ethanol extract of the root part of IKN suppressed RANKL-induced osteoclast formation and bone resorptive activity. In contrast, an ethanol extract of the aerial parts of IKN had a minor effect on RANKL-induced osteoclast formation. Mechanistically, the root part of IKN suppressed RANKL-induced p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) activation, effectively abrogating the induction of c-Fos and nuclear factor of activated T cells 1 (NFATc1) expression. IKN administration decreased LPS-induced osteoclast formation in a calvarial osteolysis model in vivo.
Conclusions
Our study suggested that the ethanol extract of the root part of IKN suppressed osteoclast differentiation and function partly by downregulating the p38 MAPK/c-Fos/NFATc1 signaling pathways. Thus, the root part
