Objective To evaluate the influence of different methods of anesthesia on the glucose metabolism of leukocytes in elderly patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery. Methods Fifty ASA Ⅰ or Ⅱ patients, aged≥65 yr, with body mass index 18-25 kg/m2, scheduled for elective colorectal cancer surgery, were randomly divided into 2 groups ( n = 25 each) : sevoflurane anesthesia group (Sevo group) and sevoflurane anesthesia combined with epidural block group ( S + E group) . The patients in S + E group underwent epidural catheterization, and 2% lidocaine 3 ml was given via the epidural catheter. If no signs of spinal anesthesia were confirmed 5 min later, the mixture of 1% lidocaine and 0.2% tetracaine 8-10 ml was given, and an increment of the mixture 4-5 ml was given every 50 min. During the operation, the end-tidal concentration of sevoflurane was maintained at 0.7 MAC in S + E group and at 1.0 MAC in Sevo group. The depth of anesthesia was adjusted according to the BIS value in both groups. Venous blood samples were taken at 10 min before operation (T1 ), and 60 min, 24 h.and 5 days after the end of operation (T2-4 ) for WBC count and measurement of activities of pyruvate kinase (PK)and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) in the leukocytes. Results Compared with T1, the WBC count at T3 in both groups, the PK activity at T, in group S+E and G6PD activity at T, in group Sevo and at T3,4 in group S + E were significantly increased ( P ＜ 0.01) . Compared with group Sevo, the PK activity at T, and G6PD activity at T3,4 were significantly increased in group S+E ( P ＜ 0.05) . There was no significant difference in the WBC count between the two groups ( P ＞ 0.05) . Conclusion There is no significant change in the WBC count when the two methods of anesthesia are used in elderly patients undergoing colorectal caner surgery, however, sevoflurane anesthesia combined with epidural block enhances the leukocyte function in elderly patients compared with sevoflurane anesthesia alone.

The incidence of malignancy tumors has increased significantly recent years in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).As the first-line oral medicine of T2DM,in addition to the safe and effective hypoglycemic effect,metformin can reduce the incidence and mortality of cancer,and improve the prognosis in T2DM patients.While the exactly anti-tumor mechanisms of mefformin is not yet clear,which might be the inhibition of proliferation and promotion of apoptosis of tumor cells mainly by acting on an adenosine monophosphate activated protein kinase (AMPK) and microRNAs (miRNAs).And metformin can inhibit migration and invasion of tumor cells,as well as strengthen the effects of chemotherapy drugs.This article reviews the recent research progress of clinical and epidemiological studies and anticancer mechanisms of metformin.

Objective To investigate the effects of house modification on quality of life and activities of daily living of discharged patients with spinal cord injury. Methods 65 patients with spinal cord injury were followed up. Among them, 31 patients accepted house modification (observation group), and 34 did not (control group). Both groups accepted routinely rehabilitation direction after discharge. They were assessed with Barthel index and World Health Organization Quality of Life Brief Form (WHO QOL-BRIEF) 1 and 3 months after discharge.Results The score of QOL and BI improved more in the observation group than in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion House modification can improve the quality of life and activities of daily living for patients with spinal cord injury.

Objective To analyze the serum level of 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25-(OH) D] in pregnant women in Nanjing and its relationship with age,gestational week,pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and season,so as to provide some guidance on clinical application of vitamin D measurement and supplementation.Methods 880 pregnant women (in 21-36 gestational weeks) regularly visiting antenatal clinic in Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing Medical University were selected from January to December 2015.Their serum 25-(OH)D concentrations were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).Results The mean serum 25-(OH) D concentration in these pregnant women was (42.03 ± 19.22) nmol/L and sufficient in only 42 (4.77％).Vitamin D levels showed seasonal variation (P =0.0164),with the levels in summer [(44.61 ±23.57) nmol/L] and autumn [(43.43 ± 19.31) nmol/L] being higher than spring [(39.68 ± 16.91) nmol/L] and winter [(39.65 ± 13.36) nmol/L].There was no statistically significant difference in serum vitamin D level among different gestational weeks (P =0.929 4).There was statistically significant difference in serum vitamin D level among different age groups (P =0.038 3).Vitamin D level was not associated with pre-pregnancy BMI.Conclusions Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent among pregnant women in Nanjing.We suggest vitamin D testing be carried out more actively.

This paper presents a recognition system for the automatic quality control in industrial applications. The purpose of the system is to collect the product information (e.g. Expiry-date, production identification) and verify these information for quality control. The main difficulties of the system are to make an effcient preprocessing for the acquired low resolution image and to create a simple and fast recognition method to get the product information. In this paper, we propose an effcient recognition method based on the endpoint features and structure characteristics of the numerals. The experimental results show that the proposed method is effcient, robust and reliable for recognizing machine printed numerals. The system is currently successfully working with a real application with required specifications.

This paper demonstrates that the visual and graphical repository can be established through extending the SVG standard, introducing C# script and customizing component into repository. The graphical system, which uses the technique of Visual Studio.Net, supports the secondary object-oriented development. It allows the user to not only add all kinds of component objects, but also add properties and functions for the object. In addition, the graphical system has a very good property of customization. It supports the C# script and the zoom in/zoom out of pictures. The file formats used in this system are XML and SVG.

ObjectiveTo discuss the value of interrupted circular suture in hemostasis of placenta previa during cesarean section. Methods We summarized 54 caesarean section patients with placenta previa. Results The hemostasis was succeeded in all of the 9 patients and uterus was retained without postpartum complications. The duration of operation was obviously shorter than that of hysterectomy( P＜0.05). Bleeding and blood transfusion were less than that of hysterectomy, but without statistical difference (P＞0.05). ConclusionInterrupted circular suture is one of the efficient methods in controlling postpartum bleeding during caesarean section with placenta previa.
