Objective To investigate the in vitro effect of wild-type PTEN gene transfection on the growth of human colon cancer cell lines. Methods With liposome transduction technique,the retrovirus vector pBp-PTEN,which contains wild-type PTEN gene segment and pBabe-puro,was transfected into Lovo,one of the PTEN-deficient human colorectal carcinoma cell lines.After identification by Western blotting,cell growth,cell cycle and apoptosis before and after transfection were studied. Results It was indicated by the cell growth curve that after transfection the curve of the transfection group exhibited a mild tendency with no obvious logarithmic growth phase,and the growth velocity was significantly lower than that of the control group(P

OBJECTIVETo evaluate clinical effect and safety of floating needle therapy and duloxetine in treating patients with persistent somatoform pain disorder (PSPD).

METHODSTotally 108 PSPD patients were randomly assigned to the floating needle treatment group, the duloxetine treatment group, and the placebo treatment group, 36 in each group. Patients in the floating needle treatment group received floating needle therapy and placebo. Those in the duloxetine treatment group received duloxetine and simulated floating needle therapy. Those in the placebo treatment group received the placebo and simulated floating needle therapy. All treatment lasted for six weeks. Efficacy and adverse reactions were evaluated using Simple McGill pain scale (SF-MPQ) and Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale (TESS) before treatment and immediately after treatment, as well as at the end of 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th week of treatment, respectively. Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD, 17 items), Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) were assessed before treatment and at the end of 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th week of treatment, respectively. Patients in the floating needle treatment group and the duloxetine treatment group with the total reducing score rate of SF-MPQ in Pain Rating index (PRI) ≥ 50% after 6 weeks' treatment were involved in the follow-up study.

RESULTS(1) Compared with the same group before treatment, SF-MPQ score, HAMD score and HAMA total scores all decreased in all the three groups at the end of 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th week of treatment (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). Besides , each item of SF-MPQ significantly decreased immediately after treatment in the floating needle treatment group (P < 0.01). Compared with the placebo treatment group, SF-MPQ, HAMD, and HAMA total score in the floating needle treatment group significantly decreased after 1, 2, 4, and 6 weeks of treatment (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). SF-MPQ score, HAMD score and HAMA total score in the duloxetine treatment group also significantly decreased after 2, 4, and 6 weeks of treatment (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). (2) There were 3 patients (8.3%) who had adverse reactions in the floating needle treatment group, 17 (50.0%) in the duloxetine treatment group, and 7 (21.2%) in the placebo treatment group. Compared with the placebo treatment group, the incidence of adverse reaction increased in the duloxetine treatment group (χ² = 6.04, P < 0.05). Besides, it was higher in the duloxetine treatment group than in the floating needle treatment group (χ² = 14.9, P < 0.05). (3) There were 19 patients in the floating needle treatment group and 17 patients in the duloxetine treatment group involved in the follow-up study. Compared with 6 weeks after treatment, no significant difference was observed at 3 and 6 months after treatment in the score of SF-MPQ, HAMD, and HAMA in the floating needle treatment group and the duloxetine treatment group. No significant difference was observed between the two groups (P > 0.05). There were 5 patients (29.4%) who had adverse reactions in the duloxetine treatment group, and no adverse reactions were observed in the floating needle treatment group. The adverse reaction rate was significantly different between the two groups (χ² = 4.26, P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONSFloating needle therapy and duloxetine were effective in treatment of patients with PSPD. However, floating needle therapy could relieve pain more rapidly than duloxetine, with obviously less adverse reactions.

The purposes of this study were to assess the importance and performance level of nutrition service in views of industrial employees and to explore the ways to improve the nutrition service quality. A survey of industrial foodservice operations located in Korea was undertaken and detailed information was collected from each, including surveys of 994 industrial employees. Statistical data was analysed by SAS PC 6.04 for descriptive analysis, t-test, and analysis of variance. The whole industrial employees assessed the importance and performance of the dieticians' role on nutrition service as '4.03' and '3.32' out of 5 respectively, which suggests that the industrial nutrition service needs to be improved. The variables which received higher scores than the average mean were safe meal provision, sanitation management and equipment & facilities management, whereas the score of individual nutrition counselling was low compared to other variables of nutrition service. The groups who scored low performance were characterized by labor work, experience with less than 10 years, single, aged below 29 years old, and female.

PURPOSE: This study was performed to examine predictors of allied health science students' exercise behavior using Pender's Health Promotion Model. METHOD: The subjects were 203 university students majoring in nursing, emergency medical service, and exercise prescription. The hypothetical model was based on the HPM(Pender, 1996). Exogenous variables of the model were exercise habit and role belief. Endogenous variables were exercise-related affect, exercise self-efficacy, exercise barrier, exercise intention, and exercise behavior. The data were analyzed by SAS PC program and LISREL 8.12 program. RESULT: The degree of exercise behavior was low(mean 1.86, range 1~4). The overall fit of the model to the data was acceptable. Exercise habit, exercise self-efficacy and exercise-related affect were significant predictors of exercise intention and exercise behavior. CONCLUSION: This study shows the necessity of the program to increase the level of exercise participation of university students majoring in allied health science. The model constructed in this study is applicable to explain exercise behavior of university students majoring in allied health science, and suggests that we should focus on exercise habit, exercise self- efficacy and exercise-related affect to increase the level of exercise behavior of this group.

BACKGROUND: The influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. The primary target groups recommended for annual vaccination are healthcare workers and households which have frequent contact with persons at high risk and can transmit influenza to those persons at high risk. Members of these groups should be vaccinated against the flu so that they can avoid getting infected with continuously mutating influenza viruses. We assessed healthcare workers' knowledge and attitudes regarding influenza vaccination in order to help promote the vaccination rate. METHODS: This survey was carried out in two hospitals affiliated with the Catholic University School of Medicine, from December 2004 to January 2005. Of the 3,023 questionnaires distributed, 2,023 could be evaluated. RESULTS: The most frequently cited reason for receiving influenza vaccine was self-protection against influenza (55.4%). The most common reasons for not receiving influenza vaccine are personal health problems such as concurrent flu, pregnancy or breast-feeding (29.2%). There is no significant difference in the frequency of side effect between two groups receiving and not receiving vaccine. The most frequent side effect of influenza vaccination is flu-like syndrome; People receiving vaccine have more significant knowledge than those people not receiving vaccine about efficacy of flu vaccination, risk of influenza infection of healthcare workers and their need of flu vaccination. CONCLUSION: In order to promote the vaccination rate, education targeting people at high risk need to keep continuous and facilitate access to vaccination.

This study was conducted to evaluate the sanitary performance and education of middle and high school foodservice employees in Seoul, South Korea in order to ensure the foodservice safety and identify why some employees cannot apply learned knowledge in real work situations. Subjects consisted of 217 school foodservice employees who attended a regular sanitary education program under the auspices of the Seoul Gangdong and Gangseo district offices. The sanitary performance was assessed with 5 dimensions (personal hygiene, ingredient control, process control, safety management and sanitary education), and was self-evaluated using a Likert 5 point scale. The data were analyzed using the SPSSWIN Version 12.0 package. The main results of the study showed that according to the general characteristics of middle and high school foodservice employees, 98.2% of respondents were women, and 64.1% of them aged 40-49. A total mean score of 5 items of sanitary performance for middle and high school employees was 4.74. Ingredient control field score was 4.83, process control 4.80 and personal hygiene 4.74. In contrast, the sanitary education field score was 4.56, significantly lower than the total mean score. Safety management field score was 4.71. Verbal education was the main method performed as a sanitary education in schools.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 12-week brisk walking and brisk walking plus diet program on C-Reactive Protein(CRP) in middle-aged obese hypertriglycemic(triglyceride > or =150 mg/dl) Korean women. METHOD: The subjects were 16 obese (BMI > or =25) hypertriglycemic middle-aged women (7 for brisk walking group, 9 for brisk walking plus diet group) who participated in a health promotion program at one public health center. Initially the brisk walking intervention consisted of walking for 20 minutes/day at an intensity of 40 to 50% of heart rate reserve(HRR) for 3 days/week and progressed to 50 minutes/day, 60 to 70% of their HRR, and 6 days/week. The diet intervention consisted of 60 minutes of group education and 20 to 30 minutes of individual counseling with a nutritionist every week. Data were analyzed with SPSS PC program. RESULTS: There was no significant reduction in CRP levels in both brisk walking (Z=-1.70, p=0.088) and brisk walking plus diet group(Z=-0.31, p=0.752). In brisk walking only group, CRP levels were increased after the intervention. CONCLUSION: Brisk walking could increase the level of CRP when it is in the course of progression and diet could decrease the acute phase inflammatory response.

OBJECTIVETo describe the epidemiologic features of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in Beijing.

METHODDatabase of the 2 521 probable cases of SARS in Beijing Center for Disease Prevention and Control was used.

RESULTSThe course of SARS epidemic in Beijing could be divided into five phases: import and spreading-from 1 to 31 in March, rising-from April 1 to April 15, peak-from April 16 to May 4, declining-from 5 to 18 in May, terminating-from 19 to 28 in May. The proportions of portable cases of SARS in each phase were 2.7%, 13.6%, 71.0%, 11.6% and 1.1%, respectively. Totally, 2 521 portable cases were diagnosed and verified according to the diagnostic criteria of SARS issued by the Ministry of Health. Among them, 192 died from SARS. The incidence and mortality rates of SARS were 18.57 per 100,000 and 1.41 per 100,000 with the fatality of 7.6%. The ratio of male to female with SARS was 1:0.97. The highest incidence rate of SARS was in the group of 20 - 29 years (30.85 per 100,000), and the lowest was in the group of 0 - 14 years (2.54 per 100,000). People aged 20 - 49 accounted for 72.3% of all SARS cases. The incidence rates in urban, suburb and far-suburb were 32.25/100,000, 20.57/100,000 and 8.90/100,000, respectively, decreasing according to the population density. Health care providers (17.3%), staff (12.9%), retirees (11.4%), workers (9.7%) and house-hold unemployees (8.8%) appeared to be at the five top risk populations being infected. The fatality increased significantly with age.

CONCLUSIONBeijing was the most severe epidemic region of SARS in the world, but the fatality was the lowest.
