Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1998;39(6):1281-1287
OBJECT: It is to evaluate the priority area for effective eye care service to the aged population of rural comniunity at present and in future. METHOD: Number of aged group surveyed on 60 and over 60 years age that, counted 531 among the total 580 patients. Visual acuity was tested and refractive error was measured by Retinornax (Nikon, Japan) . Ocular examination was performed to determine the causes of visual impairment. This survey was conducted under the auspices of the Korean Foundation for Prevention of Blindness with assistance of the Seoul National University Postgraduate School of Public Health from 1994 to 1996 at the Public Health Center of Chun-Cheon, Kang-Won Do(Province). RESULTS: Age distribution showed the sixties (60-69) 49,3%, the seventies (70-79) 33.9%, and the eighties (80) 16.8%. Proportion of visual acuity of 0.7 or upper in the better eyes constituted 32.2% and of 0.2 or worse 19.4%. Causes of visual impairnnente consisted of refractive errors 35. 9%, cataract 35. 9%, macular degeneration 7, 4%, and corneal opacity 3.9% in order. Contributed modes of care were spectacles 27.9%, surgeries 23.9% (cataract, operation, pterygium removal etc.), and medical treatment 23.9%. DISCUSSION: Surgery of the aged population in rural comrnunity of Chun-Cheon revealed the most. prevalent. causes of visual impairment as the refractive errors and cataract. It is suggested that. the most effective eye care would be provided systemically based 0 the result of the epidemiological study on the various ocular disorders.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1989;30(4):477-481
The term "entropion" is defined as a turning inward of the eyelid. Depending on the mechanism of its causation, it may be classified into four types; mechanical, spastic, senile, and cicatricial. Cicatricial entropion follows scarring of the palpebral conjunctiva, which may be caused by trauma, chemical injuries, infections such as trachoma, benign ocular pemphigus, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and eyelid surgery. Distichiasis is a rare congenital anomaly in which aberrant separate row of lashes usually composed of hairs smaller than normal, appears along the posterior lid margin. Numerous surgical procedures have been described for surgical correction of cicatricial entropion and distichiasis in accordance with the severity of the condition. We have treated cicatricial entropion in 6 eyes(8 lids) and distichiasis in 3 eyes (3 lids) with sliding tarsoconjunctival grafting, and the results were satisfactory.

Korean Journal of Anesthesiology 1999;37(4):596-602
BACKGROUND: For the rapid sequence induction of general anesthesia, succinylcholne, a depolarizing muscle relaxant, has been used. But succinylcholine has many side effects, so various efforts using nondepolarizing muscle relaxants have been tried. We have tried and observed the effect of a curonium-lidocaine mixture administration. METHODS: 120 patients who were scheduled for elective surgery were randomly assigned in 6 groups (Group I, II, III, IL, IIL, IIIL). For groups I, II and III vecuronium was administered only 0.10 mg/kg, 0.12 mg/kg, and 0.15 mg/kg, respectively. For each member of groups IL, IIL and IIIL, lidocaine 1.5 mg/kg was added to the dose of vecuronium of groupI, II and III. The vecuronium or vecuronium- lidocaine mixture was injected for 15 seconds and then thiopental sodium was injected for 15 seconds. 90 seconds after the administration of the vecuronium or vecuronium-lidocaine mixture, every patient was intubated. Intubation condition scores, TOF responses of the adductor pollicis of the thumb, arrhythmia, heart rates, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and mean arterial blood pressure were checked and compared. RESULTS: Intubation condition scores were better in groups IL, IIL and IIIL in comparison with groups I, II and III. The TOF responce of the adductor pollicis of the thumb showed a statistically signifiant difference between the lidocaine groups and the nonlidiocaine groups. The time elapsed before the disappearance of TOF was less in the lidocaine groups. Changes of systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate were no difference in the lidocaine groups and the nonlidocaine groups. CONCULUSIONS: The results suggest that administration of a vecuronium-lidocaine mixture administraion improves the intubation condition score during a rapid sequence induction of general anesthesia and shortens the time of the disapprearance of the TOF response.

Journal of the Korean Pediatric Society 1999;42(7):1008-1013
We experienced a case of split hand split foot(SHSF) anomaly in a male neonate who had a deficiency of the middle finger, syndactyly of the 1st and 2nd finger and a deep median cleft in both hands. He also had a deep median cleft between 2nd and 3rd toe, syndactyly of the 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th toe without deficiency of the middle toe in both feet. SHSF anomaly may occur either isolated or associated with other anomalies. In this case, it occurd sporadically without family history and showed an isolated type without any other specific anomalies except both posterior iris synechiae. The karyotype of patient showed 46,XY,t(7p:14q) which has not been reported yet. We reported the case with the review of the associated literatures.

The Korean Journal of Laboratory Medicine 2007;27(1):7-12
BACKGROUND: The main causes of thrombocytopenia in cirrhosis are thought to be platelet destruction and the reduction of thrombopoietin (TPO) expression in the liver. Immature platelet fraction (IPF) has been measured by a fully automated analyzer (Sysmex XE-2100, Japan) as reticulated platelet (RP), which is reflected with thrombopoiesis in bone marrow. In this study, we tried to compare the percentage of IPF (IPF) with that of RP (RP) in patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) and controls. METHODS: We compared IPF to RP in 72 liver cirrhosis patients and 30 healthy normal controls. RP was stained with acridine orange, followed by FC500 (Beckman Coulter, USA) analysis and the IPF was identified by flow cytometry with the use of a nucleic acid specific dye in the reticulocyte channel on the Sysmex XE-2100 (TOA Medical Electronics Co., Ltd., Japan). RESULTS: IPF value in the healthy control was 2.2% (1.7-5.2). RP and IPF were significantly higher in the patients with liver cirrhosis (P<0.05). IPF appeared to be correlated with RP (y=0.19x+3.35, r=0.34, P<0.05). In ROC for diagnosis of LC, IPF was significantly more useful than RP. CONCLUSIONS: This results show that a rapid, inexpensive automated method for measuring the IPF is feasible and should become a standard parameter in evaluating reticulated platelets.
