PURPOSE: This research was aimed to explore the major subjects and research theme and to classify characteristics of the key words in recent Korean Journal of Women Health Nursing. METHOD: With survey design, whole 103 published papers during 2003-2006 were analyzed with structured analysis form; research subjects, research methodology, data analysis, and key words of the published papers were classified and extracted. Various theme was founded and classified to 9 domains. RESULT: Most of the research subjects were women. Eighty-eight percent of papers conducted quantitative research; 83% chose convenience sampling and 69% used survey design, while experimental design was 29%. Key words were categorized 9 domains: demographic, health related concept, health behavior(intervention), sex-related, life event, disease, et al. Among 9 domains, health related concept, especially psycho-social topics such as depression, anxiety, stress were mostly studied and then physiologic topics such as labor pain, fatigue, and menstrual symptoms. CONCLUSION: Most of the subjects were women and the most common domain studied was health related concepts in Korean Journal of Women Health Nursing. And key words and topics were on women's health issues. We can conclude that Korean Journal of Women Health Nursing has published by her own philosophy.

This study was understand in order to examine the effect of hardness on stress-causing factors, defined in this study as burnout in nursing. The subjects were 248 nurses working in three general hospitals in Taejon. The instruments used for this study were a survey of general characteristics, modified Health-Related Hardiness Scale(HRHS) (25 items), job stress scale (63 items), and burnout scale(20 items). Analysis of data was done through the mean, percentage, Person correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression done with a SAS program. The results of this study are as follows. 1) The average item score for the job stress was high at 4.44. In the subcategories, the highest degree of stress was night duty(5.11), and work overload(4.70), responsibility for extra affairs(4.70), conflict in nurse-doctor relationships(4.69), and low reward (4.63) in that order. 2) In the stepwise multiple regression analysis, hardiness(11.55%) was a significant determinant of burnout along with job stress(17.24%) and job duration(12.94%). The results of this study show that hardiness has an effect on psychological distress caused by stress.

Background: Recent studies have shown that oral administration of probiotics may improve the immune imbalance caused by dysbiosis of the gut microbiome in atopic dermatitis (AD). This study aimed to investigate the clinical and immunological effects of Lactobacillus pentosus in children with mild to moderate AD. Methods: Children aged 2–13 years with AD were randomized to receive either 1.0 × 1010 colony-forming units of L. pentosus or placebo, daily, for 12 weeks. The clinical severity of AD and transepidermal water loss were evaluated. Blood eosinophil counts, serum total immunoglobulin E (IgE), and cytokine levels were measured. The diversity and composition of the gut microbiota were also analyzed. Results: Eighty-two children were recruited, and 41 were assigned to the probiotics intervention group. The mean scoring of atopic dermatitis (SCORAD) indices at baseline were 30.4 and 34.3 for the probiotics and placebo groups, respectively. At week 12, the mean indices were 23.6 and 23.1 for the probiotics and placebo groups, respectively. Clinical severity decreased significantly over time in both groups, with no significant difference between the two groups. In both groups, there were no significant differences in cytokine levels, microbial diversity, or the relative abundance of the gut microbiota at week 12 compared with the corresponding baseline values. The mean subjective scores of SCORAD indices after intervention for the probiotics group were significantly lower than those for the placebo group in IgE sensitized AD (P = 0.019). Conclusion Our results show improved symptoms in the probiotics and placebo groups, and we could not find additional effects of L. pentosus in AD. However, the mean subjective scores of SCORAD indices for the probiotics group are significantly improved compared with those for the placebo group in allergen-sensitized AD.

PURPOSE: The study was done to examine the effects of cognition-behavior integrated breast cancer prevention education, in which a breast model with interchangeable nodules was utilized, on the self-competency of nursing students in performing breast cancer education. METHODS: A nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design was used. A traditional lecture intervention was provided for 49 3rd year college of nursing students (control group) while the integrated breast cancer prevention education was given to 47 3rd year students in the same college one year later (experimental group). The integrated breast cancer prevention education was developed by the research team to strengthen the competency of cognitive and behavioral components in education on breast cancer. RESULTS: Effects of the intervention were found to be significant through all study variables: knowledge about breast cancer (t=7.79, p <.001), breast cancer risk awareness (t=2.05, p <.05), self-competency of breast self-exam (t=8.27, p <.001), and intention to teach breast self-exam (t=3.87, p <.001). CONCLUSION: The integrated breast cancer prevention education was useful to improve not only knowledge about breast cancer but competency in performing breast examination for nursing students who acquired technical skills from various simulation nodules. As the program helped the students to be prepared as confident educators, future application of the module is recommended for academic curricula.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among women's total symptom distress, uncertainty and quality of life in women with endometriosis. METHOD: A total of 121 women who had been diagnosed with endometriosis was given a questionnaire. Data was collected from August 2004 to January 2005. The data was analyzed by frequency, mean, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression analysis using SPSS WIN 10.0 software. RESULT: The mean score of TSD was 3.23. 'Menstrual cramping' showed the highest score. The mean score of uncertainty, and quality of life of the subject was 56.6, and 38.3 respectively. TSD was significantly related with coffee intake and uncertainty was significantly related with marital status, economic status, alcohol intake, diagnosis after period, and family history. Quality of life was significantly related with age, and dysmenorrhea. There were significant relationships between total symptom distress and uncertainty, and quality of life. There were significant relationship between uncertainty and quality of life. CONCLUSION: Endometriosis symptoms showed a significant relationship with uncertainty and quality of life. This study will help to manage women with endometriosis.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to examine site-specific bone strength changes induced by hindlimb unloading in mature adult male rats. METHODS: Eight month old (390-410 g) 26 male Sprague-Dawley rats were weight-mated assigned to either a Ground control (CON) or a Hindlimb Unloading (HU) for 24 days. Daily body weight was watched for status of animal. Weight, BMD, strength, geometry of femur, tibia and humerus were examined in both groups. RESULTS: The 24-day hindlimb unloading of HU showed no significant change of body weight, total bone mineral, and bone geometry compared to CON. HU showed that the upper limb had maintained total bone mineral, bone geometry, and bone mechanical strength compared to CON. The hindlimb of HU had significantly decreased bone strength and ultimate stress (F/B) compared to CON. DEXA analysis of BMD and BMC in HU showed inconsistent changes at femur and tibia, although a relatively constant increase was shown in humerus. In HU rats, mechanical stress testing of compulsive fracture showed that more significant decreases in UL (ultimate load) and ultimate stress (F/B) was seen in femur than in tibia. CONCLUSION: These results support the theory that hindlimb unloading contribute to deleterious effects in femur rather than in tibia. It induced higher loss of mechanical bone strength in femur. In testing for BMD, pQCT, 2D, or 3D is recommended. DEXA is not recommended because it has inconsistent results and limitation with respect to the characteristics of area BMD (g/cm2) as a surrogate of volume BMD (g/cm3).

PURPOSE: Heat therapy by heat lamp after microvascular surgery is being used for preventing blood vessels's contraction and blood-flow's disturbance. As usually, incandescent lamp has been used. But there have been several problems and need for improvement in the existing heat lamp treatment. So we would like to introduce improved heat lamp to keep an appropriate temperature and intensity of illumination. METHODS: The existing heat lamps are the ones of general light stands covered with newspaper, having 60 watt light bulb of incandescence and lampshade made of aluminum. We have tried to improve shortcomings of the existing heat lamps by enlarging the size of aluminum lampshade and attaching a curtain that can block heat and light. We conducted a comparative study between the existing and improved heat lamps. Under the assumption that there are several affected parts, we have also measured the distance from heat lamp to patients' eye region and then intensity of illumination. RESULT: The target temperature of surface was realized in 11 minutes with the maximum temperature reaching at 36.6 degrees C in 28 minutes at the existing heat lamp while the target temperature reached in 7 minutes with the maximum temperature reaching at 39.0 degrees C in 17 minutes at the improved heat lamp. The existing and improved heat lamp showed 38 lx and 0.1 lx of intensity of lumination, respectively. CONCLUSION: Using improved heat lamps, we can keep an appropriate temperature and we think we can make contribution to patients' treatment by making them and their neighbors able to sleep with minimized disturbance thanks to low intensity of illumination secured by blocking light.
