2.The Role of Central Group I mGluRs for CFA-induced Knee Joint Pain Model in Rats.

BACKGROUND: Glutamate is the predominant excitatory neurotransmitter in the central and peripheral nervous system and has known to be involved in nociceptive transmission and central sensitization. It acts through ligand gated ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs) and G protein-coupled metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs). And mGlu 1, 5 receptors have been recognized to play a role in nociceptive processing. We want to investigate whether central mGluR1 and mGluR5 antagonists could reverse the behavioral signs of weight bearing and secondary mechanical hyperalgesia induced by chronic knee joint inflammation. METHODS: MGluR1 antagonist, (RS)-1-aminoindan-1,5-dicarboxylic acid (AIDA: 25, 50, 100 microM/10 microliter, n = 7 per group) and selective mGluR5 antagonist, 2-methyl-6-(phenylethynyl)-pyridine (MPEP: 25, 100, 200 nM/10 microliter, n = 7 per group) were injected intrathecally 5 days after Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA, 150 microliter) injection into knee joint and behavior signs of weight bearing and secondary mechanical hyperalgesia were observed. RESULTS: CFA significantly reduced the magnitude of right hind paw weight bearing and decreased the withdrawal threshold to mechanical stimulation compared to contralateral side. Higher dose of AIDA (100 microM) significantly reversed the reduction of weight bearing, but MPEP did not. AIDA reversed the decrease of the paw withdrawal threshold to mechanical stimulation at the dosage of 50 and 100 microM respectively. MPEP significantly increased the paw withdrawal threshold to mechanical stimulation in a dose dependent manner. CONCLUSIONS: Group I mGluRs were involved in maintenance of primary and secondary mechanical hyperalgesia.

3.Comparison of consumption behaviors and development needs for the home meal replacement among Chinese college students studying abroad in Korea, Chinese college students in China, and Korean college students in Korea

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES:
The consumption of home meal replacement (HMR) is increasing among college students in Korea and China. In particular, Chinese college students studying abroad in Korea (CSK) show changes in their dietary behavior after migration, and HMR consumption for meal substitution is also increasing. This study was conducted to compare the HMR consumption behaviors and HMR development needs of CSK, Chinese college students in China (CSC), and Korean college students in Korea (KSK).
SUBJECTS/METHODS:
The subjects were 570 college students (180 CSK, 200 CSC, and 190 KSK) who had experience of HMR consumption. Data were collected by face-to-face survey in 2019 and analyzed using SPSS 25.0.
RESULTS:
The majority of the subjects purchased HMR to ‘saving time’ and ‘preventing meal skipping’. Average purchase price per HMR was about 5,000 won for the CSK and KSK, and about 3,000 won for the CSC. The most important attributes when selecting HMR for the CSK and CSC were hygiene, freshness, and taste in that order, while for the KSK were taste, price, and hygiene. Rice was preferred by the KSK while grilled and fried dishes were preferred by the CSK and CSC. In terms of development needs, dessert and meat-based side dishes were highest in all three groups. The preferred food materials for more than 50% of the subjects of all groups were beef, chicken, pork, shrimp, and squid, and spinach and Chinese cabbage in the CSK, and onion in the KSK.
CONCLUSIONS
This study shows more effort is needed to develop the healthy customized HMR for college students studying in Korea and China, and that focuses are placed by CSK on hygiene and freshness, by CSC on meat side dishes, hygiene, and price, and by KSK on snacks (as meal substitutes), taste, and price.
4.Descriptive Correlational Study on Personality Type using MBTI and Job Satisfaction.

PURPOSE: This study was done to examine the correlations between personality type and job satisfaction of nurses. METHODS: Subjects included three hundred twelve nurses ages from 21 to 55. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator(MBTI) was administered to determine the personality types of the nurses(n=312). A job satisfaction survey including a demographic and career questionnaire was also used. Data were analyzed using ANOVA. RESULTS: The mean score for job satisfaction was 113.68 out of 205. The result showed that there was no statistically significant correlation between job satisfaction and information gathering functions ; S: Sensing, N: Intuition (t=.667, p=.499), T: Thinking, F: Feeling (t=.822, p=.412). The results, however, indicated that style for gaining energy(I: Introversion, E: Extroversion)(t=2.008, p=.046) and life dealing style(J : Judgement, P : Perception)(t=2.290, p=.023) were significantly correlated with job satisfaction. The extrovert focuses on the outside and get energy through interacting with people and doing things. Judgement type is described as organized, decisive, and orderly. CONCLUSION: Nurses in the extrovert and judgement types were more satisfied with their jobs than those in the introvert and perceptive type. Other results support that educational level, marital status, job characteristics, clinical experiences, motivation for nursing, and night duty were correlated with job satisfaction.

5.Novel Pathogenic Variant (c.3178G>A) in the SMC1A Gene in a Family With Cornelia de Lange Syndrome Identified by Exome Sequencing.

Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous congenital anomaly. Mutations in the NIPBL gene account for a half of the affected individuals. We describe a family with CdLS carrying a novel pathogenic variant of the SMC1A gene identified by exome sequencing. The proband was a 3-yr-old boy presenting with a developmental delay. He had distinctive facial features without major structural anomalies and tested negative for the NIPBL gene. His younger sister, mother, and maternal grandmother presented with mild mental retardation. By exome sequencing of the proband, a novel SMC1A variant, c.3178G>A, was identified, which was expected to cause an amino acid substitution (p.Glu1060Lys) in the highly conserved coiled-coil domain of the SMC1A protein. Sanger sequencing confirmed that the three female relatives with mental retardation also carry this variant. Our results reveal that SMC1A gene defects are associated with milder phenotypes of CdLS. Furthermore, we showed that exome sequencing could be a useful tool to identify pathogenic variants in patients with CdLS.

6.Factors Affecting the Quality of Sleep in Young Adults

Purpose:
The study aimed to identify the effects of sleep hygiene (use of caffeine, alcohol, night eating syndrome, stress, and coping styles), social network, and smartphone-related factors on quality of sleep in young adults.
Methods:
This was a descriptive research design. Participants completed a questionnaire on evidence-based variables including caffeine intake, alcohol consumption, social network, night eating syndrome, stress, coping styles, and smartphone-related factors. Stepwise multiple regression was used for data analysis to identify factors that influenced the participants’ quality of sleep. This study included 288 young adults in South Korea.
Results:
This study identified the factors affecting quality of sleep in young adults. Their average weekly sleep duration was 6.86 hours with low sleep quality, indicated by a score of 59.34 points (range 17-100). The predictors of sleep quality were sleep mood, sub-items of night eating syndrome, effects of pain over the last four weeks, and social networks, which explained 33% of the variance.
Conclusion
Sleep-induced diseases in young adults could be prevented by identifying sleep mood, pain, and social networks, which is important for health and using them as a basis for intervention.
7.Comparison of Two Rapid Antigen Detection Tests for Diagnosis of Group A Streptococcal Pharyngotonsillitis.

PURPOSE: Recently, a number of rapid antigen detection tests have been available to diagnose group A streptococcal pharyngotonsillitis. The purpose of this study was to determine the sensitivity, specificity and consistency of the two rapid antigen detection tests. METHODS: Among the patients who visited our clinic from November 2001 to February 2002, 61 patients who had clinical findings of pharyngeal erythema or edema, pharyngeal exudates and soft palatine petechiae were enrolled in our study. A total of 61 patients were tested with rapid antigen detection tests and throat culture. BD LINK2TM Strep A(Becton, Dickinson and Company, U.S.A.) and QuickVue(R) In-LineTM(Quidel Corporation, U.S.A.) were selected for rapid antigen detection tests. RESULTS: Of the 61 patients tested, 22 patients were confirmed as group A streptococcal pharyngotonsillitis by throat culture. The BD LINK2TM Strep A had a sensitivity of 81.8% and a specificity 89.7%. The positive and negative predictive values were 81.8% and 89.7%, respectively. The QuickVue(R) In-LineTM had a sensitivity of 77.3% and a specificity of 100%. The positive and negative predictive values were 100% and 88.6%, respectively. The kappa values of BD LINK2TM Strep A and QuickVue(R) In-LineTM were 0.72 and 0.81, respectively. CONCLUSION: In addition to high sensitivity, specificity and consistency, both kits are easy to use and simple to interpret, and therefore have the potential to be used with backup throat culture for diagnosis of acute pharyngotonsillitis.

8.Relationship between electromyography and computed tomography in the evaluation of low back pain.

In a group of 109 patients with low back pain, the electromyographic(EMG) findings were compared with computed tomographic (CT) findings. There were 64 (58.7%) patients who had abnormal EMG results combined with abnormal CT findings. 11 (10.1%) cases had abnormal EMG and normal CT findings, another 11 (10.1%) patients had abnormal CT and normal EMG findings. 33 patients underwent operation; nerve root compressions were confirmed in all those with abnormal EMG findings, and 32 of those with abnormal CT findings. Among 33 surgical cases, 24 (72.7%) patients had abnormal EMG findings in both paralumbar and lower extremity muscles. In 9 (27.3%) patients there was evidence of abnormal EMG findings in the paralumbar muscles only. Among 46 who had abnormal EMG findings in paralumbar and lower limb muscles, 44 (95.6%) patients had combined CT abnormalities, and in the remaining 2 patients, nerve root 'compression was confirmed by surgery in 1 case and by myelogram in the other. In 29 cases with abnormal EMG findings in the paralumbar muscles only, 20 (69.0%) patients had combined CT abnormalities. In comparing normal versus abnormal EMG findings of the paralumbar muscles only, a significantly higher percentage of abnormal CT results were found among the abnormal EMG findings. These results indicate that abnormal EMG findings in both the paralumbar and lower limb muscles, strongly suggests the presence of nerve root compression. In cases where there are abnormal EMG findings in the paralumbar muscles only, it is recommended that CT scan must be done for the correct diagnosis of low back pain.

9.Effects of Nanofiber Alignment and Strain Direction on Cellular Activities of Human ACL Fibroblasts.

PURPOSE: The effects of fiber alignment and direction of mechanical strain on the ECM generation of human ACL fibroblast were assessed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The aligned nanofiber was fabricated using electrospinning with a rotating target. The amounts of collagen on aligned and randomly oriented structures were compared. To evaluate the effect of strain direction, 5% uniaxial strain (0.2 Hz) was applied to fibroblasts seeded on parallel aligned, vertically aligned to the strain direction, and randomly oriented nanofiber sheets. The amounts of collagen produced were measured 2 days after halting the strain application. RESULTS: The fibroblasts on the aligned nanofiber were spindle-shaped and oriented in the direction of the fibers. Significantly more collagen (22.5+/-2.7 ug/ngDNA) was synthesized on the aligned nanofiber than the randomly oriented (14.5+/-3.2 ug/ngDNA). And the amounts of collagen produced were increased by 150% and 50% approximately with the longitudinal and perpendicular cyclic strain, respectively. CONCLUSION: The aligned nanofiber scaffold used in this study constitutes a promising base material for tissue-engineered ligament in that it provides a more biomimetic structure, including the preferable mechanical environment.

10.Changes in Homocysteine Levels During Low Dose Methotrexate Therapy for Rheumatoid Arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of short term methotrexate (MTX) therapy and subsequent folic acid (FA) supplementation on plasma homocysteine (p-homocysteine) levels in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: Sixteen RA patients treated with low dose MTX (10 mg/week) were prospectively studied for 8 weeks. Sixteen age and sex matched healthy individuals were included for control. Serial p-homocysteine levels were determined before the initiation of MTX, 4 weeks after the MTX treatment, and further 4 weeks after FA supplementation. FA and vitamin B12 levels were determined before MTX treatment. RESULTS: Baseline p-homocysteine levels were not significantly different between the RA patients and the controls (7.63 vs 8.40micromol/L). However, in patients with RA, FA levels negatively correlated with the baseline p-homocysteine levels (p=0.009), whereas this negative correlation was not found in the controls. RA patients showed increased tendency in homocysteine levels after MTX treatment without folic acid supplementation but did not reach statistically significance (8.4 vs. 9.06micromol/L, p=0.57). With FA supplementation, the p-homocysteine levels significantly decreased to the level lower than the baseline value before treatment (8.40 vs. 7.05micromol/L, p=0.004). CONCLUSIONS: Folic acid nutriture is an important factor in determining baseline p-homocysteine levels. Folic acid supplementation during low dose MTX therapy result in decrease in p-homocysteine level, thereby, may be helpful to decrease the cardiovascular risk in patient with RA receiving MTX.
