Objective To investigate the efficacy of ICG clearance test for hepatic reserve function in patients with hepatic cirrhosis and primary liver carcinoma by pulse dye deusitometry (PDD). Methods Eighty-nine patients with hepatic cirrhosis and forty patients with primary hver carcinoma were enrolled in this study. All patients were classified by Child-Pugh grade. The value of indocyanin green retention at 15 min (ICGRI5) was measured by PDD. Biochemical parameters including CHE, PAB, ALB, PTA and TBA were also examined. Correlation analysis between ICGR15 and those indexes were conducted. Results (1) ICGR15, CHE, TBA, ALB, PTA among Child-Pugh A, B, C in all patients were significantly different (P < 0.05). PAB between Child-Pugh B and A group, C and B group was significantly different (P < 0.05). (2)Increased level of ICGR15 and TBA positively correlated with Child-Pugh scores, while negatively correlated with the level of PTA. The difference of ICGRI5 between Child-Pugh score 5 and score 7, score 9 and score 10 were all significant (P <0.05). (3) The correlation between ICGR15 and other clinical markers is significant. The clinical marker with the best correlation was TBA (r=0.605), was the parameter in most significantly correlated with ICGR15 followed by PTA, CHE, PAB, and ALB (r= -0.598, -0.565, -0.537, -0.424). Conclusion There was good correlation between the clinical markers and the value of ICGR15 which demonstrate superiority to the other indexes. The data also suggested that CHE, TBA, could be used in evaluating liver reserve function.

Objective:To observe the clinical effect of spinal manipulation on chronic, non-specific neck pain. Methods:Thirty patients with chronic, nonspecific neck pain were divided randomly into an observation group ( n=15) and a control group ( n=15). Patients in the observation group were given 20 minutes of a novel 4R spinal manipulation (resetting joint malalignment, resetting abnormal muscle, resetting joint stabiliazation, resetting sensorimotor control) twice a week for 2 weeks while the control group were given 20 minutes of medium frequency and high frequency conventional physiotherapy 4 times a week, also for 2 weeks. Before the treatment, right after, and one and three months later, both groups were evaluated using a visual analogue scale (VAS) and a neck disability index (NDI). Right before and after the treatment, cervical flexion and extension range of motion (ROM) were measured. The surface electromyography was employed to record the root mean square (RMS) of the EMG amplitude and the median frequency (MF) from the erector spinae and upper trapezius. Results:Before the treatment no significant differences were found in any of the measurements between the two groups. Afterward and one and three months later the average VAS, NDI and cervical ROM results of both groups had improved significantly, with the improvements in the observation group significantly greater than those in the control group on average. After 2 weeks of treatment, the average RMS and MF values had improved in both groups, again with the observation group′s average values significantly better than those of the control group. Conclusion:Spinal manipulation can effectively improve the strength and stamina of cervical muscle groups in patients with chronic, non-specific neck pain.

Journal of Experimental Hematology 2012;20(5):1284-1288
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a kind of molecules derived by oxygen in the metabolic process of aerobic cells, which mainly includes superoxide, hydroxyl radicals, alkoxyl, hydrogen peroxide, hypochlorous acid, ozone, etc. They can destroy the structure and function of cells through the damage of biological macromolecules such as DNA, proteins and the lipid peroxidation. ROS also can regulate the proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis of cells through several signaling pathways and participate in fibrogenesis of many organs including hepatic and pulmonary fibrosis. Recent study shows that ROS might have an important effect on the forming of myelofibrosis. Consequently, ROS plays a significant role in the fibrogenesis of tissues and organs. In this review, the relevance between ROS and common tissues and organs fibrosis is summarized.

Experiments were conducted to investigate the suitability of the multistage in-situ reaction analyzer based on a micro fluidized bed ( MFB-MIRA) for measuring the rapid change of the gas concentration during gas-solid reactions. The results showed that the control performance of capillary temperature had a great impact on the stability of on-line measurement. Based on the observed regular patterns, the capillary temperature control system was equipped with a precision temperature controller. The control precision of capillary temperature reached ± 0 . 2℃, which guaranteed the high stabilities of the sampling flow rate and the chamber vacuum. The measured results of the modified gas monitoring system showed the periodic fluctuations of the on-line measurement were eliminated. The stability of measurement was significantly improved. The fluctuating range and relative standard deviation of the measured response to O2 in air changed from 1. 9% and 0. 5% to 1. 4% and 0. 2%, respectively. A pressure regulating device was also developed to control the absolute pressure at the gas sampling point. The control precision reached ± 0. 02 kPa. The measured results showed that the response of the process mass spectrometer was positively correlated with the absolute pressure at the sampling point, indicating the necessity of the pressure regulating device. The accuracy and repeatability of process mass spectrometer were improved. This study has enhanced the suitability of MFB-MIRA for studying rapid gas-solid reactions and broadened the scope of reliable applications of MFB-MIRA and process mass spectrometer.

Objective To explore the effects of butylphthalide on the apoptosis of SH-SY5Y cells induced by the 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium iodide (MPP+). Methods SH-SY5Y cells were cultured with butylphthalide in the dosage of 1 µmol/L, 10 µmol/L and 20 µmol/L for 2 hours, and with MPP+ for 24 hours. The viability of cells was measured with trypan blue. The mitochondrial membrane potential was detected with Rhodamine 123. The content of P53 protein was detected with ELISA. The expression of P53 and cytochrome C (CytC) were detected with Western blotting. Results The viability of SH-SY5Y cells increased with the dosage of butylphthalide (P<0.05), while the mitochondrial membrane potential and the expression of P53 and CytC decreased (P<0.05). Conclusion Butylphthalide can prevents the SH-SY5Y cells from the injury induced by MPP+, which may associate with the inhibition of apoptosis through the expression of P53 and CytC.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the types of disc position of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and their relationship with age and gender in asymptomatic volunteers by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
METHODSA total of 100 asymptomatic volunteers were divided into 5 groups (11-, 21-, 31-, 41-, 51 - 60 years old), 10 male and 10 female were included in each group. A total of 200 TMJs were scanned with Siemens Trio Tim 3.0T MRI system oblique-sagittally at closed- and open-mouth positions. Visual evaluation of MR images were performed on 3 neighbour slices of each TMJ (lateral, central, medial).
RESULTSThere was a normal disc-condyle relationship in 59 of the 100 asymptomatic subjects. The normal disc position, anterior disc displacement and insidious anterior disc displacement (IADD) were observed in 140 (70.0%), 14(7.0%) and 46(23.0%)joints respectively, which showed no significant differences among different age groups or between genders (P > 0.05). The maximum mouth opening of the 100 asymptomatic volunteers was (46.3 +/- 5.5) mm, with no significant difference among the various types of disc position (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONSDisc displacement does exist in the asymptomatic volunteers, however, its occurrence is not associated with age and gender. IADD is the main type of the disc displacement in asymptomatic volunteers. There is no close relationship between the imaging manifestation of the disc displacement and clinical symptoms.
