BACKGROUND:Compared with conservative treatment, percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) and percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) can rapidly relieve the pain caused by the compression of osteoporotic vertebral body. However, the perfusion of bone cement can not only restore the rigidity of fractured vertebrae, but also theoretical y alter the stress distribution of fractured vertebrae and increase the stress load of adjacent vertebrae, thus causing adjacent intervertebral disc degeneration. <br> OBJECTIVE:To observe the effects of PVP and PKP on the adjacent intervertebral disc degeneration and explore the possible mechanism. <br> METHODS:A total of 85 patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture were divided into three groups:conservative treatment group (n=23), PVP group (n=42) and PKP group (n=23). ODI scores, DHI, MRII, and peripheral interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-αlevels were col ected and analyzed at different time points. <br> RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The results showed that, PVP group and PKP group relieved pain effectively, reduced the time in bed, and had a better treatment satisfaction, but there were no significant differences in the scores of ODI scores between PVP group and PKP group at 24 months after discharge (P>0.05). At 24 months after discharge, MRII in the PVP group and PKP group were lower than that in conservative treatment group and before treatment (P<0.05), while peripheral interleukin-1, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-αlevels were higher (P<0.05), there were significant differences between PVP group and PKP group (P<0.05). The disc degeneration adjacent to the fractured vertebral body can be accelerated by PVP and PKP procedures, and the latter is more serious. Interleukin-1, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-αlevels are closely related to the degree of intervertebral disc degeneration.

Objective To study some sensitive electrophysiological parameters in surveillance of allograft rejection. Methods Forty rats underwent heterotopic heart transplantations.IMEG was re- corded by an epicardiac unipolar pacing lead fixed at the right ventricular outflow tract.QRS amplitude and heart rate were determed daily in 10 syngeneic and 30 allogeneic transplants.Syngeneic transplants were killed at 7 th postoperative day,and allogeneic transplants killed at 3 rd,5 th and 7 th postopera- tive day.Histopathologie studies were performed at every transplanted heart. Results In syngeneic group,QRS amplitude kept constant after the transplantation while no significant differences were ob- served at the 3 rd,5 th and 7 th postoperative day.QRS amplitude was dropped obviously in allogeneic group after the first two postoperative days whereas significant differences were observed at the rejec- ting and non-rejecting hearts. Conclusions IMEG is a valid method to monitor acute allograft rejec- tion.QRS amplitude is a more sensitive electrophysiological parameter to diagnose severe rejections than heart rate, while mild rejections were not detected by this method.

BACKGROUND:In recent years, animal models of lumbar disc degeneration have been popularized to explore the effect of tissue engineering, cel engineering and genetic engineering technologies on intervertebral disc degeneration.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of biological patches on rabbit anulus fibrosus repair.
METHODS:L3-4, L4-5, L5-6 segments from rabbits were randomly divided into normal control group (the intervertebral disc was exposed correspondingly), control group (the annulus fibrosus was only cut with a surgical scalpel) and experimental group (the annulus fibrosus was cut and sutured with the surgical biomaterial). Six rabbits were selected randomly to take the lumbar X-ray and MRI preoperatively and 1, 2, 4, 8, 12 weeks postoperatively; one rabbit was chosen preoperatively and three rabbits selected respectively at 1, 2, 4, 8, 12 weeks postoperatively to execute hematoxylin-eosin and type II colagen immunohistochemistry.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:At postoperative 1, 2 and 4 weeks, the disc height index decreased significantly in the control and experimental groups. MRI and histopathological examination showed that the T2WI signal intensity and hematoxylin-eosin grading were both increased significantly in the control and experimental groups at 2 weeks after surgery (P < 0.05). With time, the number of nucleus pulposus cels gradualy reduced in the control and experimental groups. Annulus fibrosus defects were filed with granulation and fibrous tissues, and the biofilm was tightly fused with the annulus fibrosus. Findings from the type II colagen immunohistochemical staining showed that the histological staining of the nucleus pulposus was gradualy changed from positive to negative in the experimental and control groups. Therefore, cutting the annulus fibrosus can lead to severe disc degeneration at early period, and surgical biomaterials can be integrated with the annulus fibrosus wel to seal annulus fibrosus defects and further prevent nucleus pulposus protrusion. However, this approach cannot restrain the continuous process of disc degeneration.

OBJECTIVE:To study the in vitro uptake of Resibufogenin(RBG)lactic acid glycolic acid copolymer-water solu-ble vitamin E (PLGA-TPGS) in human liver cancer HepG2 cells, mouse ascites-type lymphatic metastasis of tumor HCa-F cells, and the toxicity on HepG2 cells. METHODS:RCPTN loading RBG and coumarin-6(C6)were prepared. Fluorescent inverted mi-croscope was used to observe the in vitro uptake by RCPTN HepG2,HCa-F cells. It was divided into negative control group, blank PLGA-TPGS nanoparticles(EPTN)group,5-fluorouracil solution(FS)group,RBG solution(RS)group,RBG/PLGA nanoparti-cles(RPN)group and RPTN group. WST-1 was conducted to investigate the optical density at 450 nm wavelength of HepG2 cells after 24,48,72 h incubated by FS,RS,RPN and RPTN with different final concentrations (1.25,2.5,5,10,20 μg/mL);the cell viability (CV) and half inhibitory concentration (IC50) were calculated. RESULTS:RCPTN distributed around the nucleus of HepG2,HCa-F cells. CV was decreased by RBG concentration increased in RPN group and RPTN group, and decreased by time prolonged;compared with FS group,CV in RPTN group was decreased(P<0.05 or P<0.01). IC50 of HepG2 cells incubated by FS,RS,RPN and RPTN was decreased by time prolonged, ordered by RS>FS>RPN>RPTN;IC50 incubated by RPN and RPTN for 48,72 h was obviously less than that of FS and RS(P<0.05 or P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS:RPTN can deliver RBG in-to HepG2,HCa-F cells, showing inhibition effect on HepG2 cells which is stronger than RPN,RS and FS.

BACKGROUND: CD58 is a glycoprotein, belongs to immune protein superfamily members, widely expresses in various human immunocytes and erythrocytes, and is the key immune substance of regulating T cell immune function by erythrocytes.OBJECTIVE: To explore the influence of moxibustion on the acupoints of Shenque (CV8) and Guanyuan (CV4) on erythrocyte CD58 expression in healthy people.DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: A randomized, controlled experiment was performed at the Central Laboratory, Shanxi College of Traditional Chinese Medicine from March to December 2008.PARTICIPANTS: A total of 40 healthy undergraduates, 20 males and 20 females, aged mean 21.08 years, admitted in Shanxi College of Traditional Chinese Medicine were selected. Informed consents were obtained from each participant.METHODS: Putting the medicinal cakes on the acupoints, Shenque (CV8), Guanyuan (CV4), Zusanli (ST36), Pishu (BL20),Shenshu (BL21), and then lighted moxa every other day, totally for 10 times. Different quantities were compared before and after applying moxibustion.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Hemocyte routine examination was performed before and after moxibustion. Positive percentage and mean fluorescent strength of CD58 molecule on erythrocyte surface were determined by flow cytometry.RESULTS: The quantities of erythrocytes and leukocytes were increased significantly following moxibustion (P < 0.01). Positive percentage and mean fluorescent strength of CD58 molecule on erythrocyte surface were significantly greater following moxibustion (P < 0.01), especially fluorescent strength of CD58 molecule on erythrocyte surface following moxibustion.CONCLUSION: There are close relationships between CD58 expression and moxibustion. Moxibustion with medicinal cake plays an important role in the immune function of a body.

Objective To explore the distribution characteristics of high density lipoprotein (HDL) subclasses in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and to evaluate the relationships of them with oxidative stress and carotid atherosclerosis. Methods The serum levels of HDL subclasses and 8-iso-prostaglandin (PG) F2α were assayed, the carotid ultrasound examinations were executed in 56 elderly patients with T2DM (male: 40, female: 16) and 41 elderly healthy controls (male: 31, female: 10). Results Compared with control group, the serum level of HDL3 was significantly lower in T2DM group [(0.51±0.21) mmol/L vs. (0.59±0.15) mmol/L,t=1.991, P< 0.05], and the serum levels of HDL and HDL2 were also decreased [(1.07±0.36)mmol/L vs. (1.18±0.32) mmol/L; (0.56±0.25) mmol/L vs. (0.64±0.33) mmol/L], but there were no statistical significances (t= 1.611 and 0.614 both P>0.05). The HDL3 was negatively correlated with HbA1C (r=-0.503, P=0.005). The values of absorbance of serum 8-iso-PG F2αwere significantly decreased in T2DM group than in control group (0.017±0. 004 vs. 0. 021±0. 008,t=2.245, P<0.05). The mean carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) was higher in T2DM group, but there was no statistically significance. The detection rate of carotid atherosclerotic plaques was significantly higher in T2DM group than in control group (63.3% vs. 36.0%, x2=4.076, P<0.05). Conclusions The low level of small particles HDL3 as well as elevated oxidative stress may contribute to the development of atherosclerosis in elderly patients with T2DM.
