Papillary eccrine adenoma is a rare sweat gland tumor with a characteristic histopathological appearance and has a benign clinical course. Five cases were reported in Korea since a report by Song et al. in 1988. We report a case of papillary eccrine adenoma in a 38-year-old male who had a firm, dark brown nodule on the medial surface of the left thigh. Microscopically, the tumor was composed of multiple dilated ducts lined by two or more layers of epithelial cells and the luminal cells showed papillary projections into the lumen in some tubules. Immunoperoxidase staining was positive for CEA, S-100, and EMA. We excised the lesion completely and no evidence of recurrence was observed for 6 months.

Met protein is a transmembrane 190 kD heterodimer with tyrosine kinase activity, encoded by c-Met oncogene. It serves as a high affinity receptor for hepatocyte growth factor (HGF)/scatter factor (SF), a cytokine which stimulates cell proliferation, motility, and invasion. In this study, we immunohistochemically evaluated the expression of Met/hepatocyte growth factor receptor in colorectal cancers. Met protein was expressed in 31 of 72 patients (43.1%). The staining pattern was cytoplasmic in nature, present throughout the tumor, and showed variable intensity from case to case. The relationship between the expression rate and intensity, and age and sex of patients, tumor size (p=0.645), tumor site (p=0.902) and tumor differentiation (p=0.844) was not statistically significant. The expression rate and intensity were significantly correlated with lymphovascular invasion (p=0.001), lymph node metastasis (p=0.010), depth of invasion (0.019), and stage (p=0.023). Cytoplasmic accumulation of Met protein was not associated with enhanced PCNA index of tumor cells (p=0.052). These results suggest that Met protein may play an important role in the invasion and metastasis of colorectal cancer cells.

Ovarian mature cystic teratoma containing benign prostatic tissue is rare and only 11 cases have been reported in the literature to date. We report a case of mature cystic teratoma of the ovary containing prostatic tissue. A 23-year-old female patient came to our hospital complaining of irregular menstruation for 3 months. Her menarche had occurred when she was 13 years old. The patient showed no evidence of virilization nor of endocrinopathy. A goose-egg-sized mass was palpable in the left lower abdomen on physical examination. Ultrasonography revealed a cystic ovarian mass with internal echogenecity. Microscopic finding was consistent with that of usual mature cystic teratoma except for a 1.5 cm focus of prostatic and bladder tissues. Prostatic tissue demonstrated strong immunoreactivity for prostatic specific antigen (PSA), prostatic alkaline phosphatase (PAP) and cytokeratin 7. Basal cells of the prostate glands were positive for high molecular weight cytokeratin (34betaE12). Although ovarian mature cystic teratoma containing prostatic tissue has been reported as a rare occurrence, a careful examination with immunohistochemical staining may increase the detection of prostatic tissue in mature cystic teratoma of the ovary.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between emotional intelligence and stress coping of nurses in hospitals. METHODS: The study was a descriptive-correlational study with a convenience sample of 298 nurses. Descriptive statistics t-test, Mann-Whitney U, One-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficients were used for data analysis. RESULTS: The results of this study were as follows; Emotional intelligence was higher in married nurses than unmarried nurses (t=-2.90, p=.004). Nurses with a clinical career of 4~7 years had better stress coping than nurses with shorter careers (F=5.60, p=.004). Ward nurses better stress coping than nurses in emergency rooms and Intensive care units (F=4.43, p=.013). Fixed shift nurses had better stress coping than nurses on rotation shifts (t=-2.37, p=.019). There was a significant positive correlation between emotional intelligence and stress coping (r=.29, p<.001). CONCLUSION: The results indicate that stress coping is better in nurses with higher emotional intelligence, 4~7 year clinical experience, working on ward a as well as having a fixed shift. However further development and application of programs which can improve nurses' emotional intelligence are needed.

Porcelain is considered to be one of the materials of choice for restoration where esthetics is of concern. But porcelain surface without final glazing treatment may induce undesirable results such as inflammatory respones on adjacent soft tissues due to plaque accumulation and increased wear of opposing teeth. Therefore, rough porcelain surface must be smoothened by final glazing treatment or chairside polishing procedure. The purpose of this study was to compare the surface roughness among self-glazed, overglazed and polished porcelain with various polishing kit, and to detect which phase of polishing is optimal in clinic. Specimens were fabricated with Vita VMK porcelain. The surface treatment of each group was performed as follows. Group 1 : overglazing treatment Group 2 : self-glazing treatment Group 3 : polishing with the Truluster Polishing System for Porcelain(Brasseler, U.S.A.) Group 4 : polishing with the Exa Cerapol Adjustment kit (Edenta dental products, Switzerland) followed by finishing with diamond-filled polishing paste Group 5 : polishing with the Shofu Porcelain Adjustment kit (Shofu inc., Japan) followed by finishing with diamond-filled polishing paste. At each polishing steps, the measurement of Ra and Rq values were performed, and the surface was examined by scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows: 1. Overglazing treatment brought smoother surface than self-glazing treatment. 2. Polishing systems without porcelain polishing paste did not make better result than self-glazing treatment. 3. Polishing system with porcelain polishing paste made similar result to overglazing treatment. 4. Applying diamond-filled polishing paste after using polishing system which has porcelain polishing paste produced surface as smooth as overglazing treatment does.

A 39-year-old man with poliosis of his lower eyelid lashes visited our clinic. He reported that his symptoms began with a few central lashes and then spread along the adjacent lashes during the ensuing 2 weeks. A pigmented nevus, approximately 4 mm in diameter, was identified just above the white lashes without surrounding skin depigmentation. No specific findings were identified with regard to the patient's general health or serologic and radiologic testing. Excisional biopsy of the pigmented nevus was performed. On histopathologic examination, infiltration of the dermis by numerous lymphocytes and melanophages was observed. The poliosis was ultimately diagnosed as a presenting sign of the halo phenomenon in the regressive stage of a melanocytic nevus.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify the effect of individualized education on stroke patients' post-discharge anxiety and self-care compliance. METHODS: It was a pretest-posttest design with non-equivalent groups. A total of 32 hospitalized stroke patients in experimental group were given individualized education three times at one day before, the day of and one week after discharge. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test and chi2-test. RESULTS: The scores of anxiety at posttest were 45.66+/-9.58 in control group and 35.44+/-8.21 in the experimental group. Self-compliance scores were 44.00+/-7.99 in control and 61.06+/-7.69 in the experimental group. These indicate that anxiety score is significantly lower (t=-4.58, p<.001), and self-compliance score is significantly higher (t=8.70, p<.001) in experimental group. CONCLUSION: If stroke patients receive a relevant individualized education, it could help reduce their anxiety. Also it would be useful to maintain and improve their self-care compliance after discharge.

Primary non-Hodgkin' lymphomas of the liver, an organ normally devoid of a native lymphoid tissue, are very rare. We recently experienced a case of a primary low-grade hepatic B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) type in a 36-year-old woman. The ultrasonography revealed a 5 cm sized mass in the right lobe of the liver. A right segmentectomy of the liver was done and showed a relatively well-circumscribed brownish yellow lobulated homogenous mass, measuring 5.5x4.5 cm in size. Histologic sections of liver mass revealed large lymphoid follicles with reactive germinal centers, follicular colonization by centrocyte-like cells (CCL cells), and lymphoepithelial lesions. The CCL cells were positive for B-cell (CD20), LCA (CD45RA), Bcl-2 oncoprotein, and lambda light chain.

BACKGROUND: This study is aimed at describing the outcomes of the management of the patients, caregivers, and healthcare workers (HCWs) who are exposed to the pandemic influenza (H1N1 2009) virus and at evaluating the adequacy in exposure management and infection control. METHODS: From July 2009 to January 2010, for 7 a month period, we managed patients and healthcare workers without any respiratory protective devices, who came within 1 m distance of H1N1-positive individuals for more than 1 h and performed a 1-week follow-up. RESULTS: The total of 157 cases with exposure to pandemic influenza (H1N1 2009) virus and exposed individuals of 907 were reported. Of the exposed individuals who were under management, 15 were confirmed to be infected with the infection rate being 1.7%. The confirmed individuals did not have a secondary infection after the exposure. Rates of infection of the exposed patients and healthcare workers were 1.8% and 1.6%, respectively, and these figures were not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: The exposure management results at the hospital revealed that the infection had spread by contact with individuals who were positive for the infection. The high incidence of early exposure to the virus warrants the need to ensure the use of protective equipment and the adoption of assertive teaching methods that have long lasting effects.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Fascin, an actin-bundling protein found in membrane ruffles, microspikes, and stress fibers, induces membrane protrusions and increases cell motility in normal and various transformed cells. The expression of fascin in epithelial neoplasms has only been described recently, and the role of fascin in colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is still unknown. METHODS: Paraffin sections of CRC from 79 patients were immunohistochemically investigated using monoclonal anti-fascin antibody. Staining of >5% of tumor cells was recorded as positive immunoreactivity. RESULTS: Overall, fascin immunoreactivity was detected in 63 of 79 patients (79.7%). Twenty-three patients were classified as 1+ (5-25% immunoreactive tumor cells) and 24 were 2+ (>25% immunoreactive tumor cells). In these patients, 16 had 3+ (>75% immunoreactive tumor cells) fascin immunoreactivity. Fascin immunoreactivity was increased according to the TNM stage (P<0.001), positive lymph node metastasis (P<0.001), budding (P<0.001), vessel invasion (P=0.001), perineural invasion (P=0.039), overall survival (P=0.012), and disease-free survival (P=0.016); however, fascin immunoreactivity was not correlated with recurrence or depth of tumor invasion. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that an increased expression of fascin was associated with a poor prognosis and the immunohistochemical detection of fascin provides useful information as one of the prognostic values in CRC.
