1.A Study on Related Factors to Overweight for Primary School Children.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the related factors to child overweight through investigation of children aged 6-12. Data on physical examinations, family history and dietary habits were obtained. Children were classified into normal(98 persons) and overweight(118 persons) group using the combination of height for age, weight for age and weight for height standard by the World Health Organization. Children's height, weight and BMI exhibited a significant difference between groups except children aged 8 for height. Unbalanced diet was a risk factors for overweight(Odd ratio : 1.765, 95% CI : 1.022~3.048). Number of brothers showed negative significance especially in two brothers compared to that of one(Odd ratio : 0.456, 95% CI : 0.209~0.995). But Birth weight, feeding practice, overeating, taking nutrition pills, sleeping time, mother's education level and employmental status didn't have any difference. We found out there were different risk factors between obese and overweight group. They should be divided into different groups in studying risk factors. And we should pay much attention to overweight children in order to prevent improving to obesity.

2.Global reach of Korean women doctors

Conveying the activities of these senior women doctors will be valuable to the younger generation of doctors who are interested in international health and who aspire to become potential leaders in the international health care scene in the future.

3.Factors Associated with Cognitive Function in Breast Cancer Patients Complaining Cognitive Decline

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive complaints are reported frequently after breast cancer treatments. The causes of cognitive decline are multifactorial, a result of the effect of cancer itself, chemotherapy, and psychological factors such as depression and anxiety. However, cognitive decline does not always correlate with neuropsychological test performance. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of subjective cognitive decline with objective measurement and to explore associated factors of cognitive function in breast cancer survivors. METHODS: We included 29 breast cancer survivors who complain cognitive decline at least 6 months after treatment and 20 age-matched healthy controls. Neuropsychological tests were performed in all participants. Multivariable regression analysis evaluated associations between neuropsychological test scores and psychological distress including depression and anxiety, also considering age, education, and comorbidity. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences in neuropsychological test performances. However, the breast cancer survivors showed a significantly higher depression(p=0.002) and anxiety(p < 0.001) than the healthy controls did. Among the cancer survivors, poorer executive function was strongly associated with higher depression(β=−0.336, p=0.001) and anxiety(β=−0.273, p=0.009), after controlling for age, education, and comorbidity. In addition, poorer attention was also significantly related with depression(β=−0.375, p=0.023) and anxiety (β=−0.404, p=0.013). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study showed the discrepancies between subjective complaints and objective measures of cognitive function in breast cancer survivors. It suggests that subjective cognitive decline could be indicators of psychological distress such as depression and anxiety.

5.Transcriptional Regulation of H2B Histone Gene Expression by Nocodazole in HL-60 Cells.

PURPOSE: Nocodazole, a microtubule disrupting reagent, is known to arrest cells in the M phase, To gain insight on the regulatory mechanism of H2B histone gene expression by nocodazole in HL-60 cell, the binding pattern of nuclear proteins to cis element in the human H2B histone gene promoter has been investigated with DNase I footprinting and DNA mobility shift assay. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Northern blot hybridization was performed by the method of Virca et al. A Hinc II-Sac I fragment of pSPH28 was used as probe for Northern blot analysis of H2B histone mRNA. DNase I footprinting and DNA mobility shift assay were performed by the method of Lim et al. End labeled DNA oligomer (upper strand, 5'-CTTCACCTTATTTGCATAA GCGATTC-3') for octamer binding activity was mixed with nuclear extracts in a 20 ul reaction volume containing 60 mM KC1, 12 mM HEPES, pH 7.9, 5 mM MgCl2, 0.2 mM EDTA, 0.2 mM DTT, 12% glycerol, and 2 ug of poly [dI-dC]. RESULTS: The level of H2B histone mRNA rapidly was reduced at 24 hours in nocodazole-treated HL-60 cells and the mRNA was repressed in proportion to the concentration of nocodazole. Nocodazole-dependent repression of H2B histone gene was restored by replacement with nocodazole-free media. In DNase I footprinting analysis, one nuclear factor bound at 42 bp site (octamer motif) in the absence of nocodazole. In the presence of nocodazole, the binding of nuclear factor on octamer motif partially vanished. In DNA mobility shift assay, one DNA-protein complex (Octl) was formed when octamer motif was incubated with nuclear extract of HL-60 cell. After nocodazole treatment, Octl binding activity was reduced by time dependent manner. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that nocodazole-dependent repression of H2B histone gene is correlated with reduction of Octl binding activity in HL-60 cell.

6.Kinesin-13, a Motor Protein, is Regulated by Polo-like Kinase in Giardia lamblia

Kinesin-13 (Kin-13), a depolymerizer of microtubule (MT), has been known to affect the length of Giardia. Giardia Kin-13 (GlKin-13) was localized to axoneme, flagellar tips, and centrosomes, where phosphorylated forms of Giardia polo-like kinase (GlPLK) were distributed. We observed the interaction between GlKin-13 and GlPLK via co-immunoprecipitation using transgenic Giardia cells expressing Myc-tagged GlKin-13, hemagglutinin-tagged GlPLK, and in vitro-synthesized GlKin-13 and GlPLK proteins. In vitro-synthesized GlPLK was demonstrated to auto-phosphorylate and phosphorylate GlKin-13 upon incubation with [γ-32P]ATP. Morpholino-mediated depletion of both GlKin-13 and GlPLK caused an extension of flagella and a decreased volume of median bodies in Giardia trophozoites. Our results suggest that GlPLK plays a pertinent role in formation of flagella and median bodies by modulating MT depolymerizing activity of GlKin-13.
7.Role of ATF on Transcriptional Regulation of DNA Topoisomerase II a Gene in HL - 60 Arrested to G2 / M and M Phase.

PURPOSE: To gain insight on transcriptional repression of Topo II a in HL-60 cells arrested to G2/M and M phase, the levels of Topo IIa mRNA and the binding activity of ATF have been investigated with Northern blot hybridization and DNA mobility shift assay, respectively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: HL-60 cells were grown in RPMI 1640 medium supplemented with 10% heat-mactivated fetal bovine serum and antibiotics in a humidified 5% CO2 at 37C degree. Total RNA was prepared by a modification of the method of Karlinsey et al. Northern blot hybridization was performed by the method of Virca et al. A Xho I-Mlu I fragment of phTOP2 was used as probe for Northern blot analysis of Topo II a mRNA. DNA mobility shift assay was performed by the method of Lim et al. End labeled DNA oligomer (upper strand, 5-TCTCCGCTATGACGCCGAGTGGTG-3) for ATF binding activity was mixed with nuclear extracts in a 20 pl reaction volume containing 60 mM KC1, 12 mM HEPES, pH 7.9, 5 mM MgCl2, 0.2 mM EDTA, 0.2 mM DTT, 12% glycerol, and 2 ug of poly [dI-dC]. RESULTS: HL-60 cells were arrested at G2/M phase and M phase after taxol or nocodazole treatment. The levels of Topo II a mRNA were reduced at 24 hours after exposure with nocodazole or taxol but the unknotting activities were not changed. DNA mobility shift assay using oligonucleotide containing the ATF binding site showed that ATF binding activity was reduced after pretreatment of nododazole or taxol. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the reduction of ATF binding activity may be important to transcriptional repression of Topo II a gene by nocodazole and taxol in HL- 60 cells.

8.Dietary Underreporting from the 2001 Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey.

BACKGROUND: Underreporting in self-reported dietary survey is a potential source of bias in nutritional epidemiology. We assessed if dietary underreporting existed in the 2001 Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey (KNHANS) and evaluated the health related factors and nutrients associated with dietary underreporting. METHODS: The subjects were 2,552 men and 3,335 women, 18 years of age or older, with a complete 24 hour recall and physical examination data including height and weight. Basal metabolic rate (BMR) was calculated from weight and height using WHO equations. Questionnaire to assess daily physical activity and regular exercise was done. EI/BMR ratio was used to evaluate dietary underreporting. RESULTS: The mean EI/BMR ratio of Korean men and women were 1.43+/-0.56 and 1.41+/-0.57, respectively. Among the total, 20.6% of men and 22.8% of women reported their energy intake lower than their BMR. Age was negatively related with EI/BMR ratio only in women (P<0.001). Body mass index, education level, and household income were negatively and daily physical activity was positively associated with the EI/BMR ratio in both sexes. Lower EI/BMR ratio was significantly associated with lower reported fat energy density (% of energy intake) and higher reported carbohydrate and protein energy densities. The EI/BMR ratio was related negatively with nutrient energy densities of Vitamin C, Calcium, and Iron. CONCLUSION: We could confirm selective dietary underreporting in the 2001 KNHNS. Caution should be paid on the interpretation of the nutrition survey data and efforts should be exercised to reduce dietary underreporting at data collection stages.

9.Calcifying Aponeurotic Fibroma of the Elbow: A Case Report.

Calcifying aponeurotic fibroma is a rare soft tissue tumor that mostly occurs in the distal extremities of children and adolescents. We report here on a case of calcifying aponeurotic fibroma of the right elbow in an 8-year-old boy, and the tumor was diagnosed by surgical excision. The patient complained of painless swelling and mild limitation of the range of motion of the elbow joint. Radiologically, the mass was ill-defined and showed stippled calcification with shallow bony erosion. Microscopically, the tumor was composed of spindle cells with nodular deposits of hyalination and calcification, and these deposits were surrounded by palisading polygonal plump cells. Immunohistochemically, the tumor showed a diffuse positive expression for CD99 and negativity for smooth muscle actin, S-100 protein and CD34. The patient has been well with no signs of recurrence during the 42 months after surgery.

10.SPM Analysis of Changes in Cerebral Blood Flow in Alzheimer's Disease with Apathy.

BACKGROUND: Apathy is one of the most frequent behavioral symptoms in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and interferes with activities of daily living. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the differences of cerebral blood flow between AD without apathy and with apathy. METHODS: Nineteen AD patients without apathy (AD-NA group) and 15 AD patients with apathy (AD-A group) were evaluated. Cerebral perfusion was measured by (99m)Tc-ECD single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). The images of the AD-A and AD-NA groups were statistically analysed by means of statistical parametric mapping (SPM) 99. RESULTS: Compared with AD-NA group, the AD-A group had significantly lower perfusion in the left inferior frontal regions (left orbital gyrus, Broadmann area 47 and left median frontal gyrus, Broadmann area 11) (uncorrected p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest apathy may be related with disturbances in projections of frontal subcortical circuits, even though apathy is primarily related with dysfunction of the cingulate gyrus.
