1.Meaning of 'Natural Childbirth' and Experiences of Women Giving Birth using Midwifery: A Feminist Approach.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the meanings of 'Natural childbirth' from experiences of Korean women who gave birth to a baby in the midwifery using a feminist approach. METHODS: This paper is a qualitative research study and applies a feminist epistemology and methodology to the experiences of women who gave birth in midwifery. The data were collected by individual in-depth interviews with eleven participants. RESULTS: Two main themes emerged from the feminist content analyses and each main theme had three sub themes. A. transformation of control and knowledge on childbirth and the body 1) refusing coercive medicalization and building a new normality, 2) specific expectations about biological health and maternity rather than a return to nature, 3) the subject of pregnancy and childbirth, B. 'natural childbirth' practice as a new embodied discipline 1) helpers to support mothers, midwives, 2) helping the body to do 'natural childbirth', 3) from isolated labor to cooperative reproduction. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that women desired to practice being a subject, consultation with professionals, self-discipline and named actors except for women as 'other subjects' in childbirth.

2.Digital Therapeutics: Emerging New Therapy for Neurologic Deficits after Stroke

Digital therapeutics is an evidence-based intervention using high-quality software, with the sole purpose of treatment. As many healthcare systems are encountering high demands of quality outcomes, the need for digital therapeutics is gradually increasing in the clinical field. We conducted review of the implications of digital therapeutics in the treatment of neurological deficits for stroke patients. The implications of digital therapeutics have been discussed in four domains: cognition, speech and aphasia, motor, and vision. It was evident that different forms of digital therapeutics such as online platforms, virtual reality trainings, and iPad applications have been investigated in many trials to test its feasibility in clinical use. Although digital therapeutics may deliver high-quality solutions to healthcare services, the medicalization of digital therapeutics is accompanied with many limitations. Clinically validated digital therapeutics should be developed to prove its efficacy in stroke rehabilitation.

3.Anatomical Relationships between Eustachian Tube and Internal Carotid Artery Using Computed Tomography.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: It is important to figure out the location between the internal carotid artery (ICA) and the Eustachian tube (ET) for conducting safe ET surgery. Using computed tomography (CT), this study was aimed to evaluate the anatomical relationship between ET and ICA according to age and gender. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: Contrast enhanced CT scans of the paranasal sinus taken between January 2005 and December 2010 were reviewed retrospectively. A total of 216 patients (432 ears) were enrolled. In each patient, we measuresed the distance from the anterior cushion of torus tubarius to ICA (AC-ICA), the distance from the posterior cushion of torus tubarius to ICA (PC-ICA), the distance from the Rosenmuller fossa to ICA, the shortest distance from ET lumen to ICA (ET-ICA), and the angle between the imaginary lines from the orifice of ET to the posterior end point of nasal septum to point ICA (ET-NS-ICA). Patients were divided into 10 groups based on age difference of 15-years. RESULTS: For the female patients aged 65 to 80 years old, AC-ICA, PC-ICA were closest from the nasopharynx. For this group, at p<0.05, the distances of AC-ICA, PC-ICA and ET-ICA showed a negative correlation with increasing age, whereasET-NS-ICA (p<0.05) showed a positive correlation, indicating a tendency of medicalization with increased age. CONCLUSION: The distance between ET and ICA represents a variety of distribution according to gender and age. When performing a surgery for the nasopharyngeal portion of ET, the surgeon should be aware of the location of ICA in the preoperative CT findings.
