OBJECTIVETo investigate the clinical effects of plate and xenogenic bony plate for the treatment of nonunion of femoral shaft fracture after initial fixation with locked intramedullary nailing.

METHODSFrom February 2006 to June 2013, 21 cases with nonunion of femoral shaft fracture after initial fixation with locked intramedullary nailing were treated with femoral plate and contralateral xenogenic bony plate. There were 12 males and 9 females with an average age of 34.8 years old (ranging from 18 to 62 years). The time of nonunion was 9 to 18 months (averaged 12.8 months). The clinical outcomes of the treatment were evaluated by Merchan assessment.

RESULTSAll of the patients were primary healing, and on complications such as infection,fat embolism, internal fixation breaking or rotational deformity, shortening were occurred. All the cases were followed up for 13.2 months (ranging from 8 to 24 months). Nineteen cases were bone healed,the time of union averaged 6.2 months (ranging from 4 to 9 months). Two cases appeared delayed union and gained bony union after 7 to 13 months' observation. According to the criterion of Merchan,the results were excellent in 13 cases, good in 6 cases, poor in 2 cases.

CONCLUSIONTreatment of nonunion of femoral shaft fracture after initial locked intramedullary fixation with plate and xenogenic bony plate has advantages of high curative rate and low complications, good postoperative function recovery, it is a reliable treatment to elevate the stability of fixation and promote the osteogenesis.

OBJECTIVETo prepare zinc-modified carbonated hydroxyapatite (Zn-CHA) coating material via sol-gel method and explore the influence of zinc substitution on physical and chemical properties of biomaterial samples.

METHODSTwo kinds of samples with different zinc content and Ca/P molar ratio were prepared. One was fabricated with 4% zinc and the Ca/P molar ratio was 1.67. Another was prepared with 8% zinc and the (Ca+Zn)/P molar ratio was 1.67. The coating samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Furthermore, the zinc ions releasing ability of the coating samples were investigated by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS).

RESULTSXRD results revealed that the coating samples contained hydroxyapatite phase. After determination by FTIR, the biomaterial samples were found to contain carbonate and resemble biological apatites. High homogeneous and porous surfaces of coating samples were observed in SEM micrographs. According to the results of dissolution test, zinc was incorporated into hydroxyapatite lattice structure or surface absorbed when calcium was insufficient or sufficient respectively.

CONCLUSIONThe results demonstrate that phase-pure zinc-modified carbonated hydroxyapatite might be prepared through simple sol-gel method and have favorable antibacterial effect.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) reference standards plays an important role in the quality control of Chinese herbal pieces. This paper overviewed the development of TCM reference standards. By analyzing the 2010 edition of Chinese pharmacopoeia, the application of TCM reference standards in the quality control of Chinese herbal pieces was summarized, and the problems exiting in the system were put forward. In the process of improving the quality control level of Chinese herbal pieces, various kinds of advanced methods and technology should be used to research the characteristic reference standards of Chinese herbal pieces, more and more reasonable reference standards should be introduced in the quality control system of Chinese herbal pieces. This article discussed the solutions in the aspect of TCM reference standards, and future development of quality control on Chinese herbal pieces is prospected.

Objective To investigate the optimal scanning parameters for diffusion tensor imaging of the cervical cord.Methods MRI and diffusion tensor imaging of the cervical cord was performed in 80 healthy adult volunteers.Different parameters including b values,the number of the diffusion sensitive gradient directions,the number of excitations,and slice thickness were applied and their effects on the quality of the images were compared.DTI was performed on the cervical spinal cord with different b-values (400,700,and 1000 s/mm~2)in group 1,with different numbers of diffusion gradient directions(6,13, and 25)in group 2,with different numbers of excitations(2,4,and 8)in group 3,and with different slice thicknesses(2,3,and 4 mm)in group 4.Two radiology experts gave a score to every image with double blind methods,then compared the image quality.Results In the comparison of the four different parameters,DTIs using a b value of 700 s/mm~2(2.25?0.58)showed better image quality than those with the b values of 400 s/mm~2(1.86?0.53)and 1000 s/mm~2(1.48?0.35)(P

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the sub-acute oral effect of titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles on the oxidation/antioxidation biomarkers and inflammatory cytokines in blood, liver, intestine, and colon in rats. METHODS: Twenty four 4-week-old clean-grade Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were randomly devided into 4 groups by body weight (n=6, control, low, middle, and high), in which the rats were orally exposed to TiO₂ nanoparticles at doses of 0, 2, 10 and 50 mg/kg body weight/day for 28 consecutive days separately. Food intake, body weight and abnormal behaviors during the experiment were recorded. The rats were euthanized on the 29th day. The blood was collected via abdominal aortic method and centrifuged to collect the serum. Tissues from liver, intestine and colon were collected and homogenated. Then enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and microwell plate methods were used to detect oxidation/antioxidation biomarkers including superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), total mercapto (T-SH), glutathione disulfide (GSSG), malomdialdehvde (MDA) and inflammatory cytokines including interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in the serum, liver, intestine and colon in the rats. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, no significant differences in body weight, food intake and organ coefficients were observed in all the three groups after TiO₂ gavage. No significant changes in GSH, GSH-Px, T-SH, and IL-6 were observed. Compared with the control group, significant increase of SOD activity in serum in high dose group, signi-ficant increase of GSSG concentration in intestine in middle and high dose group and significant increase of MDA concentration in liver in low and high dose group were observed. Compared with the control group, a significant increase of TNF-α in liver in middle and high dose group was observed. CONCLUSION TiO₂ nanoparticle can increase antioxidant enzymes activities in blood, increase oxidative biomarkers in liver and intestine, increase inflammatory cytokines in liver in rats after a 28-day sub-acute orally administration. Among blood, liver, intestine, and colon, liver is most sensitive to the toxicity induced by TiO₂ nanoparticles, followed by intestine, blood, and colon in sequence.

AIMTo study the dissociation pathways of aminoglycoside antibiotics.

METHODSIn positive mode, eight aminoglycoside antibiotics were elucidated by use of electrospray ion trap mass spectrometry in the multi-stage MS full scan mode.

RESULTSIt was demonstrated that the eight aminoglycoside antibiotics gave abundant product ions at m/z 322 (gentamicin, micronomicin and sisomicin), m/z 350 (etimicin, netilmicin and vetilmicin) and m/z 324 (kanamycin and tobramycin) by loss of the C-ring (amino-alpha-D-glucopyranose) in MS2 full scan mode. In MS3 full scan mode, the prominent fragmentation ions at m/z 163 as well as m/z 191 were formed from the fragmentation ions at m/z 322, m/z 350 and m/z 324 by loss of the A-ring (amino-alpha-D-glucopyranose), separately, while the characteristic fragmentation ions at m/z 160 as well as m/z 162 were formed from m/z 322, m/z 350 and m/z 324 by loss of the B-ring (2-deoxy-D-streptamine), separately.

CONCLUSIONThe structural information was obtained via collision-activated dissociation and these characteristics are applicable to the structural elucidation and quantitative analysis of aminoglycoside compounds.

OBJECTIVETo explore the effects of experimental varicocele on the apoptosis of spermatogenic cells in rats.

METHODSThirty-two Sprague-Dawley(SD) male rats were randomly divided into four groups: pseudo-operation group, 45 d experimental group, 60 d experimental group and 90 d experimental group. Experimental varicocele was created by partial ligation of left renal vein. The apoptosis number of spermatogenic cells was measured by flow cytometry.

RESULTSNo marked apoptosis peak was observed in the control group, but it was observed in all the other groups, and the height of the peak increased with the duration of experiment.

CONCLUSIONSVaricocele can induce apoptosis of large numbers of spermatogenic cells, and the decrease of spermatogenic cells. This may be the mechanism of varicocele causing male sterility.
