SUMMARY To demonstrate the clinical manifestation, diagnosis and treatment of myoclonus epilepsy with ragged-red-fibers ( MERRF) , a case of MERRF was presented with review of the literature. A 4-year-7-month-old girl was diagnosed with MERRF. She had tremor, fatigue and developmental delay for more than 2 years. Laboratory tests showed that the serum and urine lactic acid and pyruvic acid increased significantly. Electroencephalogram showed diffuse and focal spike slow wave and slow wave in right central and parietal regions. Electromyogram showed neurological damage. Gene mutational analysis showed mtDNA 8344 A>G mutation. The mutational rate was 78%. Mitochondrial disease MERRF syndrome was diagnosed. Cocktails therapy with vitamins B1, B6, B12, L-carnitine, and coenzyme Q10 was administra-ted to the patient. MERRF is a rare disease. The diagnosis can be made by gene mutational analysis. Cocktail therapy may slow down the deterioration of the disease. Gene therapy is still experimental.

OBJECTIVEThe effects of different nitrogen forms on the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of Prunella vulgaris were observed.
METHODWater culture experiments were carried out to observe the effects of NH4+: NO3- ratios(100:0, 75: 25, 50:50, 25:75, 0:100 in mmol x L(-1)) on the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of P. vulgaris.
RESULTThe leaf area, fresh biomass and P(n) of these cultivars increased with the increasing of NH4(+) -N: NO3(-) -N ratios, and they were found to be the highest in 25: 75 NH4(+) -N: NO3)-) -N. However, they decreased with the increasing NH4(+) -N: NO3(-) -N ratio further. P. vulgaris had a minimum leaf area, biomass, chlorophyll content and P(n) in pure ammonium group. The biggest chlorophyll and carotenoid contents were found in the ratios of NH4(+) -N to NO3(-) -N of 50: 50.
CONCLUSIONThe results indicated that properly increasing nitrate proportion could promote the growth and photosynthesis of P. vulgaris.

Objective:To evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound-guided superior laryngeal nerve block(SLNB) combined with intravenous anesthesia for improving pediatric fiberoptic bronchoscopy. Methods:Forty pediatric patients of either sex, aged 3-6 yr, of American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status classificationⅠor Ⅱ, with body mass index of 18-24 kg/m 2, undergoing fiberoptic bronchoscopy in Cangzhou Central Hospital in 2022, were divided into 2 groups ( n=20 each) by a random number table method: ultrasound-guided SLNB plus intravenous anesthesia group (group A) and topical anesthesia plus intravenous anesthesia group (group B). After sedation with dexmedetomidine and esketamine, ultrasound-guided bilateral SLNB was performed with 1% lidocaine 0.5 ml (for each side)in group A, and topical anesthesia was performed with 1% lidocaine in nasal and pharyngeal cavities in group B. After completion of the surgery procedure, propofol was continuously infused at 5 mg·kg -1·h -1 until completion of diagnosis and treatment. An increment of propofol 1 mg/kg was intravenously given if severe bucking or body movement occurred during operation. Mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR) and SpO 2 were recorded on admission to the operating room (T 0), immediately after sedation (T 1), immediately after bronchoscopy entering the glottis (T 2), 5 min after start of treatment (T 3) and at the end of examination (T 4). The occurrence of intraoperative hypoxemia, HR <60 bpm, and MAP <50 mmHg were recorded, and the additional dose of propofol was recorded. The venous blood samples were collected at T 0 and T 4 to determine plasma cortisol concentrations by chemiluminescence. The surgeon′s satisfaction score was recorded. The complications of SLNB were also recorded within 2 h after operation in group A. Results:Compared with group B, HR was significantly decreased at T 2 and T 3, SpO 2 was increased, the intraoperative additional dosage of propofol and incidence of hypoxemia were decreased, and the surgeon′s satisfaction score was increased, and the concentrations of cortisol were decreased at T 4 in group A ( P<0.05). No HR<60 bpm and MAP<50 mmHg were found in two groups. No SLNB-related complications were observed after operation in group A. Conclusions:Ultrasound-guided SLNB combined with intravenous anesthesia is safer for pediatric fiberoptic bronchoscopy and can improve the analgesic effect and is more helpful in inhibiting intraoperative stress responses when compared with conventional anesthesia.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most prevalent gynecological diseases, and its incidence is increasing year by year, seriously affecting the physical and mental health of female patients. The pathogenesis of this disease is complex and has not been fully clarified. At present, PCOS is mainly treated by Western medicine, which, however, has poor efficacy and induces various adverse reactions. Therefore, developing safe and effective therapies has become a difficult problem that needs to be solved. Studies have confirmed that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) can regulate phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B(PI3K/Akt), mitogen-activated protein kinase/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (MAPK/ERK), Toll-like receptor 4/nuclear factor-κB (TLR4/NF-κB), transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β)/Smads, secreted glycoprotein/β-catenin (Wnt/β-catenin), adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK), and advanced glycation endproduct/receptor for advanced glycation endproducts (AGE/RAGE) signaling pathways to ameliorate insulin resistance, inhibit inflammation and oxidative stress, regulate endocrine hormone disorders, and intervene in apoptosis and autophagy, thus alleviating the symptoms, slowing down the disease progression, and improving the ovarian function. The treatment of PCOS with TCM has demonstrated definite effects and high safety. Therefore, exploring this disease from cellular and molecular perspectives can provide a theoretical basis for its clinical treatment and new drug development. However, there is a lack of systematic reviews on the modulation of relevant signaling pathways by TCM in the treatment of PCOS. This article reviews the research progress in the treatment of PCOS with the active ingredients and compound prescriptions of TCM by regulating relevant signaling pathways in recent years, with the aim of providing evidence to support the promotion of TCM for treating PCOS in the future.
