OBJECTIVE: Research on the associated factors of subjective memory impairment(SMI) has reported conflicting findings. This study aimed to investigate the associations of SMI with objective cognitive function, depression, and various socio-demographic characteristics and to measure possible differences in cognitively impaired and intact elderly peoples. METHODS: A community study of individuals aged 65 or over was conducted in Kwangju, South Korea. SMI was assessed by means of asking a single item question and its associations with cognitive function(Korean version of Mini-Mental State Examination; MMSE-K), depression(Korean form of Geriatric Depression Scale), and socio-demographic factors were investigated. In addition, analyses were repeated for the cognitively impaired and intact samples separately. RESULTS: Of 1,134 participants, 596(53%) were categorized as having SMI. Depression, lower score on MMSE-K, and past manual occupation were significantly associated with SMI. Further analyses for cognitively impaired and intact samples showed some different results. For the cognitively impaired sample(n=412), SMI was significantly associated with depression and past manual occupation. For the cognitively intact sample(n=722), depression, lower score on MMSE-K, and male gender were significantly associated factors. CONCLUSION: Depression was consistently associated with SMI regardless of cognitive status. Other than depression, associated factor profiles differed between cognitively impaired and intact older populations.

A series of substituted 2-arylnaphthyridin-4-one analogues, which were previously synthesized in our laboratory, were evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxic activity against human lung cancer A549 and human renal cancer Caki-2 cells using MTT assay. Some compounds (11, 12, and 13) showed stronger cytotoxicity than colchicine against both tumor cell lines, and compound 13 exhibited the most potent activity with IC50 values of 2.3 and 13.4 micrometer, respectively. Three-dimensional quantitative structure activity relationship (3D-QSAR) studies of comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) and comparative molecular similarity indices analysis (CoMSIA) were performed. Predictive 3D-QSAR models were obtained with q(2) values of 0.869 and 0.872 and r(2)(ncv) values of 0.983 and 0.993 for CoMFA and CoMSIA, respectively. These results demonstrate that CoMFA and CoMSIA models could be reliably used in the design of novel cytotoxic agents.

OBJECTIVES: To compared the effect of different levels of moisture of root canal on the sealing ability after filling with four different types of sealer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Single-rooted teeth (n = 90) instrumented to and apical size of 0.06 / 45 were randomly assigned to 12 experimental groups (n = 7 per group), positive/negative control groups (n = 3 per group). The teeth of the experimental groups (a. DRY; b. PAPER POINT DRY; c. WET) were obturated with sealer (Group 1-3: Sealapex; Group 4-6: AH plus; Group 7-9: Tubuli-seal; Group 10-12: EndoRez) and warm vertical compaction method. After 7 days in 37degrees C, 100% humidity, the coronal-to-apical microleakage was evaluated quantitatively using a glucose leakage model. The leaked glucose concentration was measured with spectrophotometer at 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, and 30 days. Data were recorded ad mmol/L and statistically analysed with the two-way ANOVA and Duncan test (p = 0.05). RESULTS: Throughout the experimental period Tubuli-seal/WET (Group 9) showed the highest mean cumulative glucose penetration (178.75 mmol/L), whereas AH plus/DRY (Group 4) had the least (20.78 mmol/L). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study demonstrated that the moisture condition of root canals at the time of obturation and the type of sealer that was used had a significant effect on leakage and sealing ability. Thus drying procedure according to sealer types is a critical step and should not be missed in endodontic treatment.

Korean Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine 2015;23(2):107-113
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the factors including possibility of bipolar disorder that are related to intensity of suicidal idea. METHODS: The study subjects consisted of 50 patients who did suicidal attempt and treated at the Inje University Haeundae Paik Hospital Emergency Room. All participants underwent psychiatric interview and underwent Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale(C-SSRS), Beck Depression Inventory(BDI), Korean Version of Mood Disorder Questionnaire(MDQ) and Bipolar Spectrum Diagnostic Scale(BSDS) to evaluate patient's suicide attempt, severity of depression and possibility of bipolar disorder. RESULTS: Compared to non-high risk group, suicide high risk group showed significantly higher BDI(p<0.001) and intensity of ideation(IOI) in C-SSRS(p<0.001). Also intensity of ideation(IOI) was correlated with Mood Disorder Questionnaire(MDQ) bipolarity positive(p=0.033). CONCLUSION: The present study indicated that possibility of bipolar disorder plays a significant role in suicide attempters. Assessment of suicide ideation severity and possibility of bipolar disorder should be considered when suicide attempters come to emergency room.
