Journal of Acupuncture and Tuina Science 2008;6(5):301-303
The system of meridians and acupoints in the traditional Chinese medication (TCM) builds up a complex network. We analyze the features and properties of the system of meridians and acupoints as a complex network based on knowledge of TCM and mathematics. The system shows some important features of complex networks such as the small-world effect and the scale-free property. A preliminary discussion on the robustness of the meridian system as a complex network, and the biomedical functions of such robustness is also given.

Objective :
To learn the effects of cassia seed extract, ginkgo biloba leaf extract, salvia miltiorrhiza extract and red yeast rice compounds on blood lipid level of rats with hyperlipidemia.
Methods :
The model of hyperlipidemia in SD rats was established. The rats in the low, moderate and high dose groups were given 0.267 g/kg body weight,0.533 g/kg body weight and 1.600 g/kg body weight of cassia seed, red yeast rice, ginkgo biloba leaf and salvia miltiorrhiza compounds by gavage for 30 days. A blank control group and a model control group were also set. The levels of serum total cholesterol(TC),triglyceride(TG),high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C)and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C)in the five groups were measured before and after the intragastric administration.
Results :
One week after the model was founded, the levels of serum TC,TG and LDL-C in the model control group were higher than those in the blank control group(P<0.05). Before the intragastric administration, there were no significant differences in the levels of serum TC,TG,HDL-C and LDL-C between the model control group and each dosage group(P>0.05). After the intragastric administration, there were no significant differences in the levels of serum HDL-C and LDL-C between the model control group and each dosage group(P>0.05). The levels of serum TC and TG in the high dose group were significantly lower than those in the model control group(P<0.05);There was no significant differences in the levels of serum TC and TG between the moderate dose, low dose group and the model control group(P>0.05).
Conclusion
The compounds of cassia seed extract, red yeast rice, ginkgo biloba extract and salvia miltiorrhiza extract with a dosage of 1.600 g/kg body weight can reduce serum TC and TG levels in rats with hyperlipidemia.

Chinese Journal of Stomatology 2015;50(10):598-602
Objective To propose a new three-dimensional method or grading scale in the evaluation of the secondary alveolar bone grafting, thus modifying the Bergland grading scale. Methods A total of 40 patients (26 male,14 female) with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP),who underwent secondary alveolar bone grafting at least 3 months ago, were enrolled.Regional cone-beam CT(CBCT) scans were taken to evaluate the height and thickness of the postoperative bone bridges.A new three-dimensional grafting scale was established, including four grades respectively in alveolar height and thickness. Results According to the new three-dimensional scale in this study,15 grafted sites were rated grade T-Ⅰ or T-Ⅱ in the alveolar thickness among 18 sites of grade H-Ⅰ in height, and 10 among 15 of grade H-Ⅱ in height.Therefore,25 grafted sites were considered as clinical success in the alveolar thickness (grade T-Ⅰ or T-Ⅱ) among 33 sites with clinical success in alveolar height (grade H-Ⅰ and H-Ⅱ).There were 24% of 33 sites with clinical success in height, which were considered as clinical failure in the alveolar thickness. Conclusions It is necessary to establish a new three-dimensional method or grading scale for evaluating the secondary alveolar bone grafting. The three-dimensional scale can take comprehensive view of the bone-grafted alveolar clefts and thus modify the Bergland grading scale.
