Objective:This study aimed to observe the synergistic effect of a new tumor vaccine combined with metronomic che-motherapy in vivo on breast cancer. This study was also conducted to investigate the mechanism of this combination. Methods:Balb/c mice inoculated with 4T1 mouse breast cancer cell were used as tumor models. High-mobility group nucleosome-binding protein 1 (HMGN1) gene was used to transfect 4T1 cell lines as cancer vaccines. After 4T1 cell was inoculated, the mice were randomized into four groups:normal saline (NS);metronomic gemcitabine (GEM) alone;cancer vaccine alone;and combination therapy group. Tumor growth and potential toxicities of these regimens were observed. The Foxp3 expression of regulatory T cells (Tregs) was detected by western blot and immunohistochemical staining. The microvessel density (MVD) of the tumor was also detected by immunohistochemi-cal staining. Results:The tumor volume of the mice was significantly lower in the combination group than in the MET group or cancer vaccine group (P<0.05). This result exhibited a higher significant difference than the tumor volume of the mice in the NS group (P<0.01). Foxp3 expression was significantly lower in the mice treated with GEM (combination or MET group). MVD was significantly lower in these two groups than in the cancer vaccine group or NS group (P<0.05). Furthermore, adverse reactions slightly occurred in each group. Conclusion: The combination of cancer vaccines and metronomic GEM is a very active and well-tolerated regimen for breast cancer in mice.

Objective To observe the effects of electrical acupuncture for the treatment of neurogenic detrusor overactivity (DO) caused by spinal cord injury (SCI).Methods Twenty SCI patients with DO were included in this study. There were 18 males and 2 females;age ranged from 17 to 58 years. Patients were given electro-acupuncture treatment at the bilateral S3 foramen at the lateral position during the vidio-urodynamic investigation when the detrusor of the patients began to contract. The different intensities of electrical stimulation were used when the DO appeared during cystometry and the most effective intensity to inhibit DO was determined. Then, the bladder was emptied and the stimulation with selected intensity was used at the beginning of cystometry. The changes of parameters in the urodynamics, the urinary incontinence times per day and the pad used per day were recorded. The acute effects were observed. Ten days were set as one course and after 3 courses and 9 courses the patients underwent urodynamic test again. The long-term effects were observed. Results After treatment, the urinary incontinence times per day and the pad used per day decreased obviously (P<0. 05). The bladder capacity increased significantly and the maximum intravesical pressure decreased significantly. There were 3 patients having the long terms treatment. Conclusions The Chinese electro-acupuncture at S3 foramen in the SCI patients with DO is demonstrated effective. After the treatment bladder capacity could increase and the times of the urinary incontinence per week decrease.

Chinese Medical Journal 2001;114(2):152-154
Objective To investigate the expression of β-catenin and its mRNA in renal cell carcinoma. Methods Twenty-six cases with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) were studied by immunohistochemistry, Western blot and RT-PCR. Results We found the expression of β-catenis is higher in cancer tissues than in normal kidney tissues and the level of β-catenin is associated with the tumor stage. Its expression in tumor of pT3 and pT4 is obviously higher than pT1 and pT2 (P<0.01). That is to say, there was an overexpression of β-catenin protein in RCC and its level was related to the tumor stage, but the expression of β-catenin mRNA had no difference between tumor tissue and normal tissue. Conclusion β-catenin may be related to the occurrence and progress of RCC.

Background and objective Afatinib is an irreversible ErbB-family blocker with a clinical activity in non-small cell lung cancer with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations. hTe aim of this study is to assess the safety of afatinib in patients with advanced lung adenocarcinoma. Methods Patients with lung adenocarcinoma (stage IIIb or IV) with EGFR mutations were ifrst-line treated with an oral administration of afatinib (40 mg/d) until disease progression. Adverse events, effects, and survival condition were observed. Results hTe most common adverse events were diarrhea (n=5, 100%), skin rash (n=4, 80%), and mucositis/stomatitis (n=4, 80%). Moderate toxicities not exceeding grade 3 were observed. Relatively, the most serious adverse reaction was mucositis/stomatitis. Mild diarrhea occurred in all patients. hTree patients experienced temporary drug withdrawal and dose reduction because of adverse reaction. Among the four patients who were evaluated, partial response was observed in two patients (50%), one with stable disease (25%) and one with progressive disease (25%). Median progression-free survival was 9.7 months, whereas median overall survival was 18.4 months. Conclusion Afa-tinib was approved as ifrst-line treatment for patients with advanced lung adenocarcinoma. hTe most common adverse events were diarrhea and skin rash. However, mucositis/stomatitis related to afatinib should also be considered. Considering the small number of cases, the conclusion requires more trials for conifrmation.

After continuous development and improvement, lung transplantation has become the preferred means to treat a variety of benign end-stage lung diseases. However, the field of lung transplantation still faces many challenges, including shortage of donor resources, preservation and maintenance of donor lungs, and postoperative complications. Lung tissue samples removed after lung transplantation are excellent clinical resources for the study of benign end-stage lung disease and perioperative complications of lung transplantation. However, at present, the collection, storage and utilization of tissue samples after lung transplantation are limited to a single study, and unified technical specifications have not been formed. Based on the construction plan of the biobank for lung transplantation in the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University, this study reviewed the practical experience in the collection, storage and utilization of lung transplant tissue samples in the aspects of ethical review, staffing, collection process, storage method, quality control and efficient utilization, in order to provide references for lung transplant related research.
