Chinese Journal of General Practitioners 2008;7(10):671-673
Objective To study the effects of aerobic exercises on platelet function in patients with phase Ⅰ essential hypertension (EH). Methods Low-intensity aerobic exercises therapy was given to 36 patients with phase Ⅰ EH for three months. Changes of their blood pressure, heart rate, platelet aggregation rate (PAGTmax), alpha-granule membrane protein (GMP-140) and mean platelet volume (MPV) werer ecorded and compared to those in 36 normal healthy controls. Results As compared to those in controls,PAGTmax, level of GMP-140 and MPV were all increased in patients with phase Ⅰ EH before exercises therapy(t=15.221, 10. 916 and 16. 401, respectively, all P < 0. 01 ). After exercises therapy, 24-hour mean blood pressure decreased in association with reduction in PAGTmax to (0. 80±0. 05)% from (0. 88±0. 08) % (t=4. 323, P < 0. 05), level of GMP-140 decreased to ( 28±20) μg/L from (57±23 ) μg/L ( t=15.049, P<0.01) and MPV decreased to (9.0±0.9)fl from (9.1±0.9)fl (t=5.518, P <0.05) before it. But, there was no significant difference in these in dicators of platelet function in controls before and after exercise therapy (P>0.05). Conclusions Aerobic exercises therapy could be effective in lowering blood pressure in patients of mild EH with increased platelet activation, as well as inhibition ontheir platelet activation.

Objective To observe the effects of loaded swimming exercise on articular cartilage and the serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in knees modelling osteoarthritis in rats. Also to explore how loaded swimming might be useful in treating knee osteoarthritis (KOA) in clinical practice. Methods Fifty male Wistar rats were divided randomly into a normal group (20 rats) and a model group (30 rats).A model of knee osteoarthritis was created in the rats of the model group by papain injection.Ten rats from the normal group and 10 from the model group were sacrificed for:① gross and optical microscopic observations of pathological changes in their knee articular cartilage; ② quantifying the expression of MMP-13 in the knee articular cartilage using immunohistochemistry; ③ determining serum SOD and MDA content using enzyme-linked immunosorbet assays. The remaining 20 rats of the model group were divided into a loaded swimming group (10 rats) and a control group (10 rats). There were no extra interventions involving the rats in the normal and control groups. The rats in the loaded swimming group took loaded swimming exercise for 6 weeks. After that, the same 3 indicators were again surveyed in all groups. Results The scores of pathological changes and the expression of MMP-13 in knee articular cartilage decreased significantly more in the loaded swimming group than in the control group.Serum SOD content also increased significantly more. Conclusions Loaded swimming exercise can delay articular cartilage damage and increase the serum SOD content of osteoarthritic knees,at least in rats.

Taxol could induce tumor cell apoptosis throug h activation of Fas/FasL and caspases. bcl-2 also played an important role in t axol-induced cell apoptosis. Furthermore, taxol had the similar action with lip opolysaccharide on inducing the release of bioactive substances including tumor necrosis factor, interleukin and nitric oxide. There were as well some progresse s in taxol-resistance of tumor cells.
