Telomere and telomerase play important roles in protecting and maintaining the stability and integrity of chromosomes. Telomere and telomerase are closely related with multiple diseases, and their relationship with aging and tumors has become a hot topic in recent years. Relevant reports in the American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting in 2016 will be reviewed together with advances of telomere and telomerase in hematological diseases.

Although tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) have profoundly improved prognosis of patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), it still can not cure CML with high relapse rate when TKI is used alone. Except for effective development of TKI and precise application of the existing TKI,the exploitation of new therapy target, research on treatment for leukemia stem cells and cocktail targeted therapies also provide further inspiration for improving treatment and curing CML. This article will introduce the advances of therapy in CML.

Objective To evaluate the clinical outcome of severe ulcerative colitis(UC)and to find the factors related to treatment and outcome.Methods Forty one hospitalized patients with UC during 1988-2004 were retrospectively reviewed.Data were recorded including the onset,symptoms,signs, laboratory,endoscopic,radiologic and pathologic findings,as well as the processes of clinical treatment. The patients who undergone surgery were also analysed.Results Forty one of 144(28.5%)hospital ized patients were suffered from severe UC,and among them 92.7%(38/41)had pancolitis.The patients who had first onset,chronic persistent,chronic recurrent type were account for 36.9%(15/41),36.9%(15/41) and 26.8%(11/41),respectively.The steroids treatment played the main role in the inducing remission of severe UC(61.0%).Thirty one cases(75.6%)could be relieved by drug therapy.Seven cases(17.1%) were progressed to have operation.The age of early onset,pancolitis,low hemoglobin and serum albumin levels and need of intravenous steroids treatment were associated with the need of surgery.Conclusions Most of the severe UC patients respond well to the medical therapy,but for some non-responding or steroids depending individuals,after a reasonable duration of treatment,surgery should be considered.

Objective: To clinically evaluate the efficacy of electrolyzed oxidizing water (EOW) as a root canal irrigation solution on disinfecting bacteria and removing the smear-layer to keep the non-bacterium state in the root canal. Methods: In the first experiment, 108 single-rooted teeth that needed root canal treatment were randomly divided into two groups. EOW was used as the root canal irrigation solution in the experimental group while 30 ml/L H2O2, saline solution, and 75 g/L EDTA solution were used as controls. Bacteriological examinations were conducted from each tooth before and after treatment with the root canal irrigation solutions. In the second experiment, the 20 fresh human extracted teeth were divided into two groups and treated as same as the first experiment in root canal preparation and irrigation. After irrigation, the apical canal wall was observed using SEM. Results: There was no significant difference in bacterial growth and removing the smear layer between the group using EOW and that using saline solution, 30 ml/L H2O2 and 75 g/L EDTA solution. Conclusion:The results indicate EOW is useful as a clinical root canal irrigation solution.

Objective To study the effect of 2?-(3-hydroxypropoxy)-Calcitriol (ED-71) on the cell growth and differentiation of human osteoblast-like cell line OS-732. Methods Osteoblast-like cells were cultured with various concentration of ED-71.The effects of ED-71 on proliferation and differentiation were detected by (MTT), alkaline phosphatase activity and level of osteocalcin (bone gla protein,BGP). Results The proliferation rate of osteoblast-like cells cultured for 4 days was significantly inhibited by 10~ -7mol/L concentration of ED-71. ED-71 in 10~ -8, 10~ -9mol/L concentration can significantly increase BGP level, but ED-71 in 10~ -7mol/L concentration may decrease BGP level.Alkaline phosphatase activity compared with control was not changed significantly. Conclusions ED-71 can inhibit cell growth in high concentration and improve cell differentiation in lower concentration.

Objective To compare the changes in the management of severe preeclampsia during a ten-year period, and the maternal and perinatal outcome. Methods Totally, 305 cases of severe preeclampsia were collected in our hospital from January 1999 to December 2003. The management, mode of delivery, frequency of complications and maternal and fetal outcomes were compared with the 349 cases from January 1994 to December 1998. The detection of JAK2 V617F and CALR mutations,which was first reported in 2005 and 2013,respectively,had greatly improved the diagnosis and treatment of myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN).Most MPN patients are inclined to thrombophilia,the carrier frequency of JAK2 V617F mutation was also high in patients of various thrombotic events,and the relationship between the two conditions needs further study.The observation of JAK2 V617F mutation in control group and general population also enlightened and changed the understanding about the development of chronic cancer.Research progress in this area will be introduced together with the related reports in the 56th American Society of Hematology annual meeting in 2014.
