BACKGROUND: Twin-block appliance has been confirmed to efficiently change hard tissue and the profile of soft tissue.Whether a linear relationship exists between soft tissue and hard tissue changes remains unclear.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the face convexity changes of soft and hard tissues after Twin-block appliance therapy and compare with controls.METHODS: Thirty-one class Ⅱ division 1 malocclusion subjects with hand-wrist radiographs in FG-G stage were selected.Among the 31 patients,17 received Twin-block appliance therapy, serving as experimental group, and the remaining 14 subjects abandoned treatment, serving as control group.Cephalometric radiographs of each included subject were taken prior to and after treatment or observation.Face convexity of soft and hard tissues,as well as the face convexity changes, was compared between the experimental and control groups.Linear regression equation was employed to analyze the linear association between soft-and hard-tissue changes.Regression equations of experimental and control groups were compared.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Prior to and after Twin-block appliance therapy,a significant correlation existed between the position changes of superior and inferior alveolar sockets relative to the nose and mandible, and the position changes of upper and lower lip pits relative to the nose and mandible,i.e.,there was a linear correlation between A-E change and Ss-E change, and between B-E change and Si-E change. The largest Pearson's correlation coefficient(0.839)appeared between Si-E change and B-E change, indicating the best correlativity between these two changes.Statistical analysis revealed that the linear equations of face convexity changes of soft and hard tissues after Twin-block appliance therapy were Si-E=0.745 B-E,Ss-E=0.276 A-E.These linear equations would be helpful to explain mandible growth and face convexity change after Twin-block appliance therapy and predict the prognosis of face convexity change.

Objective To investigate the clinic pathologic features of young patients with renal malignant tumour by comparing with older patients. Methods The clinical data of 83 younger adults(age,≤40 years) with renal cell carcinoma and 703 cases of older renal cell carcinoma (age>40 years)was analyzed and compared retrospectively. All of the patients were surgically treated between 1986and 2007. Results Among patients with symptoms, younger female patients were more likely to have abdominal pain(12/27, 44.4% vs. 154/703, 21.9%)and mass (2/27, 7.4% vs. 154/703,1.3%)than older (P<0.05). The older groups were more likely to have dear cell carcinoma than in the younger(501/703, 71.3% vs. 47/83, 56.6%)(P<0.05). The rate of PRCC has the trends to be higher in young patients than that in older patients (21/83, 25.3% vs. 118/703, 16.8%) (P=0.054),especially in male patients (17/56, 30.4 %) (P=0.011). The rate of MFH and leiomyosarcoma was significantly higher in young patients than that in older patients (6/83, 7.2% vs. 12/703,1.7%) (P< 0.05), especially in female patients (4/27,14.8%). Younger male patients were more likely to have a higher incidence of small tumors (T≤4 cm)(24/56,42.9 % vs. 173/703,24.6 % )(P<0.05)and a lower incidence of big RCC(T>7 cm) than older patients(12/56,21.4% vs. 295/703,42.0%) (P<0.05). Conclusion Younger female renal cell carcinoma patients tends to have worseprognosis than older patients, while younger male patients have better prognosis due to different pathology.

Euphorbia kansui (EK) is a toxic herbal drug, and often used after vinegar-processing to reduce its toxicity. In present study, a 1H-NMR based metabonomic approach was used to evaluate the detoxification effect of vinegar-processed EK. The water extracts of EK and VEK were administered orally to male SD rats at doses of 9 g x kg(-1) x d(-1) for 1 week, respectively, and one more week observation was further conducted. The control group was orally given with saline. Histopathological studies of liver samples on the 8th and 15th day were conducted, and the metabolites of rat urine and liver were analysed by 1H-NMR. Histopathological studies of liver samples from EK and VEK treated rats showed no negative impacts. In metabonomic analyses of urines, changes of metabolites indicated liver damages, kidney lesions and imbalance of gut microbes in the second week. VEK-treated rats showed a quite lower toxicity compared with EK-treated ones. The present study revealed that the metabonomic approach might be helpful for the evaluation of toxicity of EK and detoxic effect of VEK.

Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2014;(3):482-487
BACKGROUND:Serious patel ar comminuted fractures can be treated by a number of methods such as cerclage with tension band steel wire or steel wire, or fixation with the nickel titanium patel a concentrator and absorption lines, or cerclage with 10# double-loop wire plus fixation with split-type patel a claws or with the memory al oy patel a concentrator. But it is difficult to achieve strongly fixed effect on patel a fractures by these methods.
OBJECTIVE:To investigate the clinical effects of suture with polyester braided wire and cerclage with belt lock cable on serious comminuted patel ar fractures.
METHODS:A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of 57 patients with serious comminuted patel ar fractures who received suture with polyester braided wire and cerclage with belt lock cable from January 2007 to October 2012. According to AO classification of fractures, there were nine cases of type B3, 22 cases of type C2 and 26 cases of type C3. After satisfactory reduction of comminuted patel ar fractures during the operation, firstly we sewed up both sides of the expansion region of quadriceps muscle and stitched on periosteum and prepatel ar tissue with thick polyester braided wire fol owed by patel ar cerclage with belt lock cable. According to the stability of fracture blocks, tension band fixation with polyester braided wire was partial y added. After the operation, the clinical effects were assessed based on the Bostman score system.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Total y 46 out of 57 cases were fol owed up with an average of 8 months (4-18 months). Al patients obtained bone union within 3-5 months. Wounds healed in the first stage without any infections, and fractures in al patients healed without complications such as implant loosening and skin irritation. According to the Bostman score system, 33 cases were scored excellent, 10 good and three fair. The excellent and good rate was 93.5%. It suggests that treatment of serious patel ar comminuted fracture by the combination of polyester braided wire and belt lock cable leads to closely contact fracture sites and reliably fix bone fragments. It can facilitate early postoperative range of motion exercises.
