Chinese Journal of Geriatrics 2010;29(11):891-893
Objective To explore the correlation between the parameters of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) and prostatic volume in elderly patients with essential hypertension. Methods The 131 elderly patients with essential hypertension from March 2007 to December 2009 were enrolled in this study, including 102 benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) patients and 29 nonBPH (NBPH) patients. All patients underwent ABPM and ultrasound examination of prostate.Prostatic volumes (PV) were calculated and were compared between BPH group and NBPH group.Correlation between parameters of ABPM and PV was analyzed. Results (1)The maximal mean artery pressure (MAPmax) at night was higher in BPH group than in NBPH group [( 104.7 ± 12. 0)mm Hg vs. (99.6± 10. 1) mm Hg, P= 0.039]. (2)There were correlations between PV and MAPmax in all-day (r=0. 184, P=0. 035), MAPmax at daytime (r=0. 183, P=0. 037), MAPmax at night (r=0. 181, P=0. 040), respectively. Conclusions MAPmax of ABPM may be associated with PV in elderly patients with essential hypertension.

Objective To study the feature extraction methods for the event related potential (ERP) evoked by mental arithmetical tasks through the sample entropy, in order to enhance the features of electroencephalograph (EEG) signals for brain computer interface (BCI).Methods Three types of mental arithmetic tasks including a simple counting, a random number and a stroke of Chinese character counting were proposed and 16 channel EEG signals were recorded from eight healthy subjects. The sample entropy method was then applied in characteristic signal complexity analysis. The characteristic and difference of signal complexity of ERP evoked by three types of mental arithmetical tasks were explored. Results The entropy value for EEG signal evoked by non-target stimulus was higher than that by the target stimulus with the significant difference (P<0.01).The entropy of the mental arithmetic based on the Chinese characters counting task was significandy higher than that of the other two tasks (P<0.05).EEG signals evoked by target/non-target were fundamentally signals under the state of attention or non-attention.Conclusions For the Chinese characters counting task, more complex information have been processed by the brain and the non-linear connection between nerve cells are much more complicated and a higher entropy value is achieved. In summary, the mental arithmetic task can effectively activate the relevant brain regions and the sample entropy can distinguish signals evoked by target or non-target stimuli.

Objective To compare the effect of clustered acupuncture of the scalp combined with constraint induced movement therapy (CIMT) with that of conventional acupuncture of the body points plus conventional rehabilitation intervention after cerebral infarction using blood oxygenation level dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (BOLD-fMRI).Methods Thirty acute cerebral infarction patients with hemiplegia were equally divided into two groups at random. The test group received the clustered acupuncture of the scalp combined with CIMT,while the control group received the body point acupuncture plus conventional rehabilitation intervention. Before and after two weeks of treatment, blood oxygenation level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging at 3.0 T was performed during a passive digital opposition movement. The volume and intensity of the activated areas were compared.Fugl-Meyer assessment (FMA) was carried out as well. Results The most pronounced activation appeared in the contralateral somatosensory motor cortex for both groups. There was no significant difference in average FMA scores between the two groups before the treatment, but after the treatment the averages were significantly different. An increase in activated volume and intensity in the contralateral SMC was observed in both groups after the treatment, but the test group showed a much larger change in both activated volume and intensity. Conclusion The clustered acupuncture of the scalp combined with CIMT can achieve a more significant improvement in functional recovery after acute cerebral infarction than conventional acupuncture of the body points plus conventional rehabilitation intervention.Such combined therapy is worthy of application in clinical practice.

ObjectiveTo investigate the expression of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in lung tissue of mice with acute paraquat poisoning, and discuss its pathological mechanism. Methods Fifty-eight healthy male mice were randomly divided into control group (n = 8) and poisoned group (n = 50). The mice in poisoned group were lavaged with 20% paraquat (50 mg/kg), and those in control group with equal amount of normal saline. The mice were sacrificed on the day of experiment in control group, and those in poisoned group at 6 hours and 1, 3, 7, 14 days after poisoning. The lung tissue was harvested to observe the changes in pathology of lung with hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining. The positive expression of HO-1 was determined with immunohistochemistry, and the protein expression of HO-1 was determined with Western Blot. The contents of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malonaldehyde (MDA) were determined. Results The mice showed shortness of breath and signs of exhaustion 1 hour after poisoning, getting worse on 3-5 days, but returned to normal 14 days after poisoning. Under the light microscope, it showed that the control group had no significant pathological changes in lung tissue. One day after the ingestion, pulmonary alveolar structure disorder, obvious hemorrhage, edema and infiltration of inflammatory cells were found. At 3 days, the pathological changes in the lung tissue were more pronounced. They were less pronounced on 7 days, and inflammatory changes disappeared on 14th day, but alveolar structure disorder remained. Immunohistochemical test showed that HO-1 was seldom expressed in the lung tissue, and a little amount was expressed in the mucosal epithelial cells of the airway in control group. It was shown that inflammatory cell and endothelial were mainly distributed in the mucosal epithelial cells of airway 1 day after poisoning followed by a gradually decrease tendence, and came to normal level of control group 7 days after poisoning. It was shown by Western Blot that HO-1 (gray value) in lung tissue increased 6 hours after poisoning (2.438±0.467 vs. 0.475±0.167,P< 0.01), peaked at 1 day (9.200±0.940 vs. 0.475±0.167,P< 0.01), continued to increase till 7 days after poisoning, and it lowered to normal level thereafter (0.825±0.260 vs. 0.475±0.167,P> 0.05). The SOD activity (μU/L) in lung tissue was lowered 6 hours after poisoning, and it was significantly lower than that of control group (649.681±13.951 vs. 1 167.051±15.744,P< 0.01), and it continued to decrease up to 14 days after poisoning (859.733±121.079 vs. 1 167.051±14.744,P< 0.01). MDA content (μmol/L) in the lung tissue homogenate was elevated 6 hours after poisoning with significant difference compared with that of the control group (4.542±0.266 vs. 3.705±0.176,P< 0.01). It peaked on day 1 (5.956±0.281 vs. 3.705±0.176,P< 0.01), then it declined and reached normal level 3 days after poisoning (4.134±0.168 vs. 3.705±0.176,P> 0.05).Conclusion HO-1 expression was increased significantly in lung tissue of mice with acute paraquat poisoning, which may be considered as an important protection mechanism against paraquat poisoning.

BACKGROUND:The molecular mechanism of traumatic deep vein thrombosis is complex.Numerous studies focus on clinical observation and epidemiology, but its molecular mechanism has not been a new breakthrough.OBJECTIVE:By use of gene array technology, this study was aimed to study the expression changes of matrix metalloproteinases in rat models of traumatic deep vein thrombosis, and to explore the roles of matrix metalloproteinases in traumatic deep venous thrombosis.METHODS:A total of 150 SD rats,SPF grade,of 8-12 weeks old, body weight of 250-300 g,were divided at random into normal control group (n=10) and model group (n=140).Rat traumatic deep venous thrombosis models were set up by clamping the femoral vein and fixing the bilateral hind limbs, and the fixation of hip spica with plaster bandage was conducted in each group. Then rats were divided into 7 subgroups:post-traumatic 0.5 hours,post-traumatic 2.5 hours (initial period of thrombosis),post-traumatic 25 hours (thrombogenesis at thrombotic crest-time),post-traumatic 25 hours non-thrombogenesis at the thrombotic crest-time),post-traumatic 72 hours (thrombus resolution),post-traumatic 72 hours thrombus insolution) and post-traumatic 168 hours (nonthrombosis). At the corresponding phasess, the femoral vein tissues were incised, and total RNA of femoral vein was extracted using Trizol one-step method.Applying Genechip Rat Genome 430 2.0 genechips, the gene expressions in femoral vein were detected in different groups. The rate of traumatic deep venous thrombogenesis and non-thrombogenesis,the rate of thrombi solution and insolution were observed;the expressions of matrix metalloproteinases and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases at different time phases was detected by gene array data analysis.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Three model rats died and the remaining 147 rats were involved in the final analysis. At the post-traumatic 25 hours, the rate of thrombogenesis was 50.5% and nonthrombogenesis was 49.5%.To the post-traumatic 168 hours, the rate of thrombus solution was 56.7% and thrombus insolution was 43.3%.Both matrix metalloproteinases and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases exhibited differential expressions in the course of traumatic deep venous thrombosis.Under the thrombus insolution state, matrix metalloproteinases continued to show a high expression, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase expression was down-regulated in the thrombus formation, was significantly inhibited in the thrombus insoluUon process. In the process of traumatic deep vein thrombosis and insolution, matrix metalloproteinase was closely related to traumatic deep vein thrombosis, the matrix metalloproteinase/tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases are likely to affect the biological state of thrombosis.
