Objective To investigate the relationship between of the serum homocysteine (Hcy) level and the occurrence and severity of diseased coronary arteries in patients. Methods The total serum Hcy content was determined in sixty-seven patients with diseased coronary arteries and forty-three normal subjects. They were all subjected to coronary artery angiography for evaluation. Using the Gensini's scoring system the degree of severity of of pathology the coronary arteries were assessed. Objective To improve the recognition, diagnosis and treatment of synchronous bilateral thyroid carcinoma(SBTC). Methods The diagnosis and treatment of 11 patients with SBTC were analysed. Results Of them, 9 patients were well differentiated cancer, 1 medullary cancer, 1undifferentiated cancer. The diagnosis was comfirmed by needle aspiration biopsy(NAB) in 2 cases preoperatively, by frozen section in 4 cases intraoperatively. Among the 11 patients, total thyroidectomy was performed on 4 patients, near total thyroidectomy on 7 patients; functional neck dissection(FND) on 7 patients. Ten patients were followed up for 1～2 years (average 4 years and 9 months), only 1 patient died; 9 patients were alive and 8 were free of cancer. Conclusions The diagnosis of SBTC is difficult before operation, so for suspicions patient of SBTC, preoperative NAB or intraoperative frozen section should be done to make the diagnosis. The choice of surgery for SBTC is near total thyroidectomy. FND should be done, if the patient has indication of FND, but a preventing FND is not advocated.

Objective To analyze the genetic diversity of higher artemisinin-yielding Artemisia annua. Methods With the chemical investigation of artemisinin contents, RAPD analyses of selected plants from ten various habitats in China were carried out using arbitrary primers. Results The RAPD data clearly indicated the genetic diversity level in A. annua was relatively high with 53.6% polymorphic sites. UPGMA Analyses of RAPD and phytochemical trait data showed that the wide phytochemical diversity was included within the genetic diversity being present in at least four geographical regions. ConclusionArtemisinin has obvious inherited differentiation that further support the prospects for selection and breeding of superior artemisinin containing lines.

Objective To find out the dynamic variation on HCV genome to give the theoretic basis for diagnosis of post transfusion hepatitis C,and demonstrate the causality between donors and recipients suffering from post transfusion hepatitis C.Methods The high variable envelope gene fragments (HVR1 and HVR2) of HCV was selected for a cross sectional study and a one year follow up study was carried out on 3 HCV patients at every 3 month period to understand the dynamic variation of HCV HVR in each patient.Results The homology of HCV HVR genes among different types is 56.99%～60.88%,65.09%～68.80% among different subtypes,and 80.05%～96.40% among the same subtypes.It consists with the geographic distribution of HCV.The homology between the different strains isolated from the same patients is 92.10%～99.73%,95.36%～97.54 and 97.07%～99.20%,respectively.Conclusion The variation of different HCV strains in HVR is great.However,the variation of the same virus in the same patient during short infectious period is rather limited,which is no more than 7.9% per year.So the transmission pathway of some hepatitis C cases can be trailed at the molecular level by this way,and some non transfusion transmitted hepatitis C cases can be exclude

Objective To compare the peri-operative anaesthetic management between emergent and selective operations of(off-pump) coronary artery bypass grafting(OPCAB).Methods A retrospective review was conducted on clinical data of 50 cases of OPCAB from January 2001 to December 2004 in this hospital,including 30 emergent operations(Emergent Group) and 20 elective operations(Selective Group).The preoperative assessment and preparation,hemodynamic changes,vasoactive agent usage,hemostatic functions,and postoperative outcomes were compared between the two groups.Results ①The risk assessment score was greater in the Emergent Group(18.56?5.12) than in the Selective Group(8.98?3.12)(t=-7.479,P=0.000),and the application rate of(intra-aortic) balloon pump assist device(IABP) before the operation was higher in the Emergent Group(93%) than in the Selective Group(50%)(?~2=12.354,P

Objective:To explore the effects of total saponins of panax ginseng ( TSPG) combined with icariin ( ICA) on learning and memory capability, oxygen free radical and apoptosis of hippocampal CA1 pyramidal cells in vascular dementia ( VD) rats. Meth-ods:The VD rats were obtained by occlusion of bilateral common carotid artery and reperfusion repeatedly combined with intraperitoneal injection of sodium nitroprusside. Spacial learning and memory ability was evaluated by 8-arm radial electric maze test on the 21st day af-ter the drug treatment, the activity of SOD and the level of MDA in the brain were determined, and the adjacent sections were used to de-tect fragmented DNA in apoptotic cells( TUNEL) . Results:The learning and memory ability of the model rats judged by the 8-arm radial electric maze test was significantly decreased compared with that in the sham-operated group (P <0.05). The combination treatment could significantly protect and improve all the evaluated indices of the model rats after the 3-week treatment (P<0. 05) with increased SOD (P<0. 05), and decreased MDA (P<0. 01) and TUNEL positive cells (P<0. 05). Conclusion:The combination drug treatment can significantly protect and improve the spacial learning and memory ability of VD rats, which is related with such effects as improving oxygen free radical metabolism and nerve cell injure in hippocampal CA1 region.
