OBJECTIVEThis study was conducted to investigate the correlation between anemia and postoperative chemotherapy in elderly cancer patients.
METHODSOne hundred and fifty-seven elderly patients ( age ≥ 60) with pathologically confirmed breast, lung and digestive tract cancers, who had HGB ≥ 120 g/L and ECOG scores 0-2, were included in this study. We reviewed their clinicopathological data and analyzed the correlation of anemia in breast cancer patients after 1, 3 or 5 cycles and lung cancer patients after 1, 2 or 3 cycles of postoperative chemotherapy.
RESULTSAmong the 157 cases, the overall proportion of anemia was 31.8% (50/157) , with 18.8% in male and 47.2% in female patients (P < 0.001). After three cycles of chemotherapy, the proportion of anemia was 57.9% in lung cancer, 34.5% in breast cancer, 26.3% in gastric cancer and 9.3% in colorectal cancer patients (P < 0.001). The proportion of anemia during 5 cycles chemotherapy (three cycles in lung cancer) was gradually increasing. In the lung cancer patients, anemia was observed in 66.7% of patients who received vinorelbine plus cispiatin regimen and 25.0% of cases who received vinorelbine regimen chemotherapy (P = 0.044).
CONCLUSIONSIn most elderly patients with normal hemoglobin level and in good conditions, the chemotherapy-related anemia is mild and less frequent. Age should not limit the adjuvant chemotherapy in elderly cancer patients. Attention should be paid to the possibility of anemia in elderly female lung cancer patients receiving multiple cycle platinum-based chemotherapy regimens.

Objective To study the effects of alternating magnetic field with different intensities on the proliferation of human squa-mous tongue cancer cells in vitro. Methods Viable cells with the OD value cell and flow cytometry were revealed through MTT assay to evaluate the proliferation and apeptosis and cell cycle respectively after the cells were exposed to electromagnetic fields of different intensity (5mT,8mT,11mT) once per day lasting 1 hour for 3 days. The sham -exposure controls were correspondingly established. Results We compared the electromagnetic field groups with the normal groups by MTT assay after 24,48,72 hours. By analyzing the data in SPSS sta-tistical software , we found that the OD value of electromagnetic field groups was significantly less than that of the control groups (P <0.01) . The rates of apoptosis cells by flow cytometry revealed that EMF groups had no change as compared with control groups. But the cell cycle displayed significant chang at 0.5rot. Conclusion The cells displayed significant changes with obvious Tca8113 cell prolifera-tion inhibition and hold - up cell cycle after being exposed to alternating magnetic field of different intensity. But human squamous tongue cancer ceils could not be induced to apeptosis.

Objective To investigate the expressions of cell phenotypes CD_8 and CD_(28) of peripheral blood lymphocytes in patients with colorectal cancer. Method CD_8 and CD_(28) of cell phenotypes were measured by flow cytometry in 50 patients with colorectal cancer (cancer group) and 30 nontumorous patients (control group). Results The expression of CD_8 in cancer group was significantly higher than that in control group [(32.24±8.38)% vs (22.18±7.55)%](P < 0.01). CD_(28) and CD_8~+/CD_(28)~+ were much lower than those in control group [(52.03±10.94)% vs (60.60±7.98)%,12.18±4.28 vs 16.38±4.94](P<0.01). CD_8~+/CD_(28)~+ in Dukes D stage patients were significantly lower than that in Dukes B stage patients (P<0.05). CD_(28) and CD_8~+/CD_(28)~+ in lymph node metastasis patients were much lower than those in lymph node negative patients (P < 0.01). CD_(28) and CD_8~+/CD_(28)~+ in serosa involved patients were lower than those in no serosa involved patients (P < 0.01). Conclusions The expressions of cell phenotypes CD_8 and CD_(28) of peripheral blood lymphocytes in patients with colorectal cancer are closely related to biological characteristics of the tumor. The assays of cell phenotypes CD_8 and CD_(28) might be useful for evaluating the immunal statement and prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer.

Chinese Journal of Rheumatology 2011;15(5):291-295
objective To study the role of anti-EBV antibody in the development of systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE).Methods Peripheral blood was obtained from 55 SLE patients and 29 normal controls, and anti-EBV-VCA IgG,IgA,IgM antibody was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay[ELISA).Totat RNA was extracted from peripheral blood of 33 SLE patients and 26 normal controls and then reverse transcribed into complementary DNA.Real-time PCR technique was used to determine gene expressions at the transcription level.Comparison of anti-EBV antibody level and interferon inducible gene expression was made between SLE Datients and normal controls by t-test.The associations between anti-EBV antibody level, lupus activitv and IFN inducible gene expression were analyzed by Spearman's correlation analysis. Results (1)The levels of anti-EBV antibodies in SLE patients were significantly increased as compared to those in the normal controls[IgG(41±6)vs(19±6)U/ml,IgA(15.4±1.8)vs(8.3±2.1)U/ml,IgM(7.8±1.0)vs(3.7±1.2)U/ml]cantly elevated in SLE Datients as compared to normal controls[IFN scores 11±13 vs 0±3](all P<0.05),but not correlated with the levels of anti-EBV antibody in patients(all P>0.05).Conclusion Anti-EBV antibody is overproduced in SLE patients but not associated with disease activity as well as the expression level of several major types of I IFN inducible genes, suggesting that EBV infection may not be a major factor mediating the activation of IFN pathway and consequently the exacerbation of SLE.

Objective To investigate the regulatory effects of umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC -MSCs) on Th17 cells and related cytokines in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods Human UC-MSCs were isolated and expanded and infused into fourteen SLE patients. Clinical changes were evaluated before and after transplantation by SLE disease activity index (SLEDAI), 24-hour urine protein, serum albumin and complement C3. The percentages of CD3 +CD8-IL17A + T cells in peripheral blood were detected by flow cytometry. Concentrations of plasma IL-6, TGF-β, IL-17A, IL-22were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). UC-MSCs and peripheral blood mononindependent samples t-test. Results SLEDAI scores decreased significantly at 3 month (7.8±1.2, t=2.19) and 6 month (6.9±0.9, t=4.2) after UC-MSCs transplantation than pre-transplantation level (10.4±0.9, P< 0.05). Twenty-four-hour proteinuria decreased significantly 6 months after MSCs infusion [(1489±260) mg vs (2454±322) mg, t=2.6, P<0.05]. Meanwhile, serum albumin and complement C3 levels had increased significantly since 1 month after transplantation (P<0.05). The percentages of peripheral blood CD3+CD8-IL17A+T cells decreased obviously in 1 week, 1 month and 6 months after UC-MSCs transplantation (all P<0.05). The coculture of UC-MSCs with PBMC from SLE patients resulted in a statistically significant reduction of CD3+CD8-IL17A+T cells percentage in PBMC (P<0.05), but was not in a dose dependent manner. No change of plasma IL+6, TGF-β, IL-17A and IL-22 levels was observed after UC-MSCs transplantation (P>0.05).Conclusion UC-MSCs transplantation down-regulates the percentages of CD3+CD8-IL17A+T cells in SLE patients, which may be one of the mechanisms for its therapeutic effect in refractory SLE.
