Journal of Experimental Hematology 2011;19(5):1097-1101
Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), a potent chemotactic and mitogenic factor, is involved in the regulation of hematopoiesis and platelet production. Our studies demonstrate the presence of functional PDGF receptors (PDGFR) on human megakaryocytes/platelets and CD34(+) cells, and their ability to mediate a mitogenic response. PDGF promotes the ex vivo expansion of human hematopoietic stem (CD34(+)) and progenitor (CD41(+)) cells. More significantly, PDGF enhances the engraftment of human CD45(+) cells and their myeloid subsets (CD33(+), CD14(+) cells) in NOD/SCID mice. PDGF also stimulates in vitro megakaryocytopoiesis via PDGFR and/or the indirect effect on bone marrow microenvironment to produce TPO and other cytokines. It also shows a direct stimulatory effect of PDGF on c-Fos, GATA-1 and NF-E2 expressions in megakaryocytes. We speculate that these transcription factors may be involved in the signal transduction of PDGF on the regulation of megakaryocytopoiesis. PDGF also enhances platelet recovery in mouse model with radiation-induced thrombocytopenia. This radioprotective effect is likely to be mediated via PDGFR with subsequent activation of the PI3K/Akt pathway. It provides a possible explanation that blockage of PDGFR may reduce thrombopoiesis and play a role in imatinib mesylate-induced thrombocytopenia.

Journal of Interventional Radiology 1994;0(02):-
Objective To study the efficacy of thyroidal arterial embolization in treating hyperthyroidism by using different embolizing materials and the relationship between recurrence rate and the numbers of embolized arteries. Methods 56 cases with hyperthyroidism were divided into group A (25 cases) and group B (31 cases). Patients of group A had their thyroidal arteries embolized with gelfoam particles and stainless coils after arterial infusion of a total dosage of 24 mg of blemycin. Patients of group B had their thyroidal arteries occluded with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) particles. The effectiveness and general complications of arterial embolization for these two groups were compared and the relationship between recurrence rate of hyperthyroidism after treatment and numbers of embolized thyroidal arteries was studied. Results It showed effectiveness in all patients within 2 3 months. The follow up records showed, the recurrence rate of hyperthyroidism was 28% and 16.1% for group A and group B respectively but without statistical difference. The recurrence rates were 46.7% for those patients with 2 thyroid arteries embolized and 12.2% for those with 3 4 arteries embolized, showing significant difference ( ? 2=7.751, P
8.Clinical Observations of Mind-regulating Acupuncture in Treating 100 Cases of Peripheral Facial Paralysis
Journal of Acupuncture and Tuina Science 2007;5(5):307-310
Objective: To investigate the clinical effect of mind-regulating acupuncture therapy on peripheral facial paralysis. Methods: Two hundred subjects were divided into observation group (treated by mind-regulating acupuncture therapy) and control group (treated by points of Yang-ming meridians) with one hundred in each group. The points of Yang-ming meridians were mainly selected for control group, observation group were treated by points with the function of regulating mind besides the points of control group, for two courses with 10 treatments in course. Results: The cure rate was 65.0% and total effective rate was 99.0% in observation group, while in control group, the cure rate was 55.0% and total effective rate was 91.0%, the curative effect in observation group was prior to control group (P<0.05). Conclusion:The therapy of mind-regulating acupuncture gives a quicker response, a shorter course of treatment and a higher cure rate.
