Objective To investigate the clinical and electrophysiology features of infantile spinal muscular atrophy, and explore the clinical significance of genetic diagnosis. Methods The clinical data of 13 infants suffering from infantile spinal muscular atrophy were analysed. The serum creatine phosphokinase was examined, and nerve conduction velocity was tested in median nerve, ulnar nerve, tibial nerve and peroneal nerve. The parameters such as distal motor latency, motor nerve conduction velocity and amplitude of compound motor active potential were analysed.Electromyography was performed in no less than four muscles, and the insertion potential, spontaneous potential and motor unit action potential were observed.Deletion of exon 7 in SMN1 gene was detected by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism(PCR-RFLP). Results All these infants were characterized by progressive flaccid paralysis in limbs. In all cases, amplitude of muscle response was significantly decreased, with prolonged distal latency and slowed conduction velocity.Electromyography demonstrated motoneuron degeneration.Deletion of exon 7 in SMN1 gene was detected in all 13 infants. Conclusion There are unique clinical and electrophysiology features for infantile spinal muscular atrophy, and electromyography may play an important role in the diagnosis.Prenatal genetic diagnosis may help to avoid the birth of this kind of infants.

NAS preparation, a kind of Chinese herbal medicine found by the Yunnan Eco-agricultural Research Institute, has potential antiviral activity. In this paper, the inhibiting effect of NAS preparation on H9N2 subtype Avian influenza virus (AIV) was investigated in vivo. Chickens infected with H9N2 virus were treated with NAS preparation for 4 days. The virus was then detected by hemoagglutination (HA) test and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The results showed that no H9N2 virus could be detected at the 7th day when the chickens were treated with 0.2g/kg/d or 0.1g/kg/d of NAS preparation. However the virus could be detected in other chickens without NAS preparation treatment. This result suggested that NAS preparation may be a potential drug candidate to control infection of H9N2 subtype AIV in chickens.

BACKGROUND:IPS e.max Presshas an excelent biocompati bility and corrosion resistance, which obtains satisfactory clinical outcomes on dental veneers, inlay and onlay restorations. But little is reported on molar monolithic restoration by IPS e.max Presscrown.
OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the clinical effects of IPS e.max Press crown on molar repair after root canal therapy.
METHODS:Totaly 215 patients with 324 affected molars, including 88 males and 127 females, aged 22-58 years old, were enroled for repairing with IPS e.max Presscrown. Then the color, shape, fracture and edge coloring of the restoration, marginal discrepancy, secondary caries and gingival health status were assessed after a 3-year folow-up.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:During the folow-up, 324 dental restorations met the class A standards for color, marginal discrepancy, shape as wel as secondary caries. In addition,3restoration swere fractured, 14 restorations had margin coloring, and 8 restorations appeared to have gingival inflammation. More than 95% restorations were scored grade A. These results indicate that IPS e.max Press crown applied to molar repair after root canal therapy can achieve ideal outcomes.

Objective To investigate the endurance or resistance of different bacteriophages to bubbling stress in different sampling solutions,to select the optimum sampling solution from three different ones and to select relatively stress-resistant bacteriophages from five different ones. Methods AGI-10(all glass impinger)was used as the representative for all the impingers that would bubble during operation to fulfill the bubbling experiment.Three different sampling solutions used, such as distilled water(DW),phosphatic buffer solution(PBS),and suspension medium(SM),were divided into two groups by adding olive oil(50 μl) or otherwise(0 μl).The impingers were operated 30 min at a flow rate of 7.0 L/min.The titers of bacteriophages and the volume of final sampling solutions were determined before the corrected survival probability was used to evaluate the stress resistance of several different bacteriophages. Results It was found that the survival probability of the same bacteriophage bubbling with different sampling solutions was different except for bacteriophage F2.The use of SM as the collection fluid was related to a high survival probability which remained unchanged between 50 μl and 0 μl olive oil.The corrected survival probability was 79%,77%,86%,50% and 71% for phage SM701,SM702,PhiX174,EcP1 and F2 respectively after 60 minutes of impingement at a flow rate of 7.0 L/min.Conclusion The endurance or resistance of different kinds of bacteriophages in the same sampling solution is different.SM might be an optimum sampling solution for phages.Bacteriophage SM701,SM702 and PhiX174 are more resistant to bubbling stress than EcP1 and F2.

[Objective] To compare the influence of first-degree relatives' cancer history on the genetic tendency of gastric and colorectal cancer. [Methods] Patients with gastric and colorectal cancer from six towns of Suzhou City were investigated by means of face-to-face survey based on the "Family History and History of Population Diseases Questionnaire"which included general conditions, family composition and cancer occurrence of all their three degree relatives. [Results] If there were first-degree relatives with history of cancer, individual risk of gastric cancer would be higher than that of colorectal cancer by 55%, with the adjusted OR (95% CI) being 1.551 (1.021, 2.356). If there were first-degree relatives with history of digestive tract cancer, the risk of the subject would increase to 104%, with the adjusted OR (95%CI) being 2.037 (1.279, 3.246). Men with first-degree relatives who had cancer history was at91% higher risk of developing gastric cancer than colorectal cancer, with the adjusted OR (95%CI) being1.911 (1.080, 3.381). And for history of digestive tract cancer, the risk would reach 156%, with the adjusted OR (95% CI) being 2.559 (1.337, 4.897). The number of cancers suffered by first-degree relatives of those patients with gastric cancer was higher than that of patients with colorectal cancer, with Z =-6.873, P<0.001, while the number of digestive tract cancer was also higher, with Z =-6.137, P<0.001. [Conclusion] The history of cancer and digestive tract cancer with first-degree relatives, is more common in patients with gastric cancer than with colorectal cancer. It is necessary to focus health education on men with first-degree relatives suffering from cancer or digestive tract cancer and suggest some changes in their living habits and regular medical examinations to reduce the occurrence of gastric cancer.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the interaction between hydrogen sulfide (H2S)/cystathionine gamma-lyase (CSE) system and nitric oxide (NO)/nitric oxide synthase (NOS) system on cardiac protection in metabolic syndrome (MS) rats.
METHODSForty one male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 6 groups: control group, MS group, H2S donor group, CSE inhibitor group, NOS inhibitor group, and NO donor group. The MS rat model was established by a high-fat diet of 16 weeks. Rats in control and MS groups were subjected to normal saline and the other four groups were respectively subjected to sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS, 56 μmol/kg), D,L-propargylglycine (PPG, 37.5 mg/kg), Nψ-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 18 mg/kg), L-Arginine (500 mg/kg) every day. Four weeks later, the obesity indices, blood sugar of oral glucose tolerance test in each time point (0,30,60, and 120 minutes) and blood lipids (cholesterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein, low density lipoprotein) were measured. The computer-based electrophysiological recorder system was used to measure the changes of the left ventricular systolic pressure (LVSP), the left ventricular end diastolic pressure (LVEDP), the maximal rate of pressure increase in the contraction phase (+dP/dtmax), and the maximal rate of pressure decrease in the diastole phase (-dP/dtmax). H2S and NO concentration in plasma and myocardium, as well as CSE, constitutive NOS (cNOS), and inducible NOS (iNOS) activities in myocardium were measured with colorimetric method. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was used to assess the gene expression of CSE and endothelial NOS (eNOS) mRNAs.
RESULTSCompared with control group, the obesity indices, blood sugar at each time point, and blood lipids significantly increased in MS group (P<0.05). H2S and NO concentration in plasma and myocardium, CSE and cNOS activities in myocardium, the expressions of CSE mRNA and eNOS mRNA, and the myocardial function significantly decreased in MS group (P<0.05). Compared with MS group, NO concentration in plasma and myocardium, cNOS and iNOS activities in myocardium, and the expression of eNOS mRNA significantly increased in CSE inhibitor group (P<0.05). However, activities of cNOS and iNOS in myocardium and the expression of eNOS mRNA were significantly decreased in H2S donor group (P<0.01), while the myocardial function significantly increased (P<0.05). H2S concentration in plasma and myocardium, and the expression of CSE mRNA significantly increased in NOS inhibitor group (P<0.05). However, in NO donor group, the CSE activity in myocardium and the expression of CSE mRNA significantly decreased (P<0.05). And the myocardial function was improved significantly (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONSBoth the H2S/CSE and NO/NOS systems appear to have a mutual down-regulation effect on myocardium in MS rats. Meanwhile, exogenous H2S and NO supplement is cardioprotective in rat model of MS.
