Objective To explore the relationship of serum homocysteine ( Hcy) level with metabolic syndrome (MS) and its components. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in 594 adults consec-utively sampled from people visiting Fuwai Hospital for physical examination between September and Decem-ber 2012, including 160 MS participants (MS group) and 434 without MS participancs (without MS group). Serum Hcy levels, serum biochemical parameters, and anthropometric measurements of all the participants were collected.Binary logistic regression was used to assess the association of serum Hcy levels with MS and its components. Results No significant difference in Hcy levels was observed comparing the MS group and the without MS group [(12.2 ±7.0) μmol/L vs.(12.6 ±8.4) μmol/L, P>0.05].Between participants with and without hyperhomocysteinemia (≥15 μmol/L vs.<15 μmol/L) , no statistically significant differ-ences were observed in prevalence of MS and its metabolic disorders ( MS 27.3% vs.26.9%; high blood pressure 27.3% vs.19.6%; high triglycerides 50.0% vs.48.3%; high-density lipoprotein cholesterol 39.8%vs.36.6%; dysglycemia 30.7% vs.32.6%; abdominal obesity 31.8% vs.31.2%; all P >0.05).Among participants having 0 to 5 metabolic abnormalities, there were no significant differences in ser-um Hcy levels [ (12.3 ±7.4) μmol/L; (12.4 ±6.7) μmol/L; (13.2 ±11.2) μmol/L; (12.5 ± 7.8) μmol/L; (11.2 ±2.7) μmol/L; (12.4 ±4.3) μmol/L; all P>0.05].In a binary logistic re-gression model adjusted for age, gender, body mass index, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein choles-terol, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, neither MS nor its components were independent predictors of serum Hcy levels ( all P>0.05 ) .Conclusions Elevated serum Hcy levels are not associated with MS or its components in people without evident cardiovascular diseases .MS and elevated serum Hcy levels may cause cardiovascular diseases via different mechanisms .

Creatinine, uric acid, hypoxanthine and xanthine are important diagnostic biomarkers in human urine for gouty arthritis or renal disease diacrisis. A simple method for simultaneous determination of these biomarkers in urine based on reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) with ultraviolet (UV) detector was proposed. After pretreatment by dilution, centrifugation and filtration, the biomarkers in urine samples were separated by ODS-BP column by elution with methanol/50 mM NaH2PO4 buffer solution at pH 5.26 (5:95). Good linearity between peak areas and concentrations of standards was obtained for the biomarkers with correlation coefficients in the range of 0.9957-0.9993. The proposed analytical method has satisfactory repeatability (the recovery of data in a range of creatinine, uric acid, hypoxanthine and xanthine was 93.49-97.90%, 95.38-96.45%, 112.46-115.78%and 90.82-97.13%with standard deviation of o5%, respectively) and the limits of detection (LODs, S/N Z 3) for creatinine, uric acid, hypoxanthine, and xanthine were 0.010, 0.025, 0.050 and 0.025 mg/L, respectively. The established method was proved to be simple, accurate, sensitive and reliable for the quantitation of gouty arthritis' biomarkers in human urine samples. The ratio of creatinine to uric acid was found to be a possible factor for assessment of gouty arthritis.

Objective To evaluate the feasibility of the porous titanium/chitosan/hydroxyapatite (Ti/Ch/HA) composite scaffold as a bone repair substitute. Methods Additive manufacturing (3D printing) technology was used to fabricate porous Ti scaffolds as supporting structures.Chitosan/hydroxyapatite (Ch/HA) sponge was prepared within the macro-pores of Ti scaffolds using freeze drying technology. Thus,a kind of composite porous Ti/Ch/HA scaffold with good cell affinity was obtained.Osteoblastic cells were seeded and cultured in pure porous Ti scaffolds and composite Ti/Ch/HA scaffolds for 7 days. The cellular morphology, seeding efficiency and proliferation were examined and compared between the 2 kinds of scaffolds using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and MTT assay. Results The SEM examination showed that the macro-pores of Ti/Ch/HA scaffolds were full of the composite sponge structure of Ch/HA,with a micropore size of 50 to 200 μm.Like the pure porous Ti scaffolds, composite Ti/Ch/HA ones have a compressive strength of 168.2 to 192.6 MPa,a yielding strength of 137.1 to 154.1 MPa,and a Young's modulus of 3.21 to 4.51 GPa.After culture for 7 days,a large number of flat cells adhered onto the surface of Ti scaffolds while the cells adhering onto the Ti/Ch/HA composite scaffolds were fusiform. The seeding efficiency of osteoblastic cells in the composite Ti/Ch/HA scaffolds (73.218% ± 3.748%) was significantly higher than that in the pure porous Ti scaffolds (21.352% ±4.365%) (P <0.05);the OD value of the composite Ti/Ch/HA scaffolds (0.783 ±0.043) was significantly higher than that of the pure porous Ti scaffolds (0.382 ± 0.036) (P < 0.05).Conclusions Ti/Ch/HA composite scaffolds can match human bone in mechanical properties.Compared with pure porous Ti scaffolds, the Ti/Ch/HA composite ones are more suitable for adhesion and proliferation of osteoblasts, making them an ideal kind of bone repair substitute.
