OBJECTIVETo evaluate the antioxidant activity of astragalus and its therapeutic effect on gestational diabetes.
METHODSEighty-four pregnant women with gestational diabetes were divided into insulin and insulin plus astragalus groups after regular dietary control and insulin treatment to maintain stable blood glucose level. The 43 patients in insulin group received insulin injection, whereas the 41 patients in the other group received treatment with both insulin and astragalus. The SOD activity, MDA level, blood lipids and renal function were determined in both groups after the treatments.
RESULTSThe patients with both insulin and astragalus treatments showed significantly increased serum SOD activity and decreased MDA level, renal function and blood lipids in comparison with those with exclusive insulin treatment.
CONCLUSIONAstragalus can effectively control blood glucose, reduce the free radicals, and promote the antioxidative activity, and may play a role in the prevention and treatment of gestational diabetes.

The molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis of hemagglutinin (HA) genes of human influenza H3N2 viruses in Guangdong, China from 2007 to 2010 were studied in this study. By space-time sampling of strains, the HA genes of H3N2 strains from Guangdong were sequenced and searched from Internet, and then the variation and evolution of HA genes were conducted by Lasergene 7.1 and Mega 5.05 and evolutionary rates were analyzed by epidemiological data. The phylogenetic tree was established by alignment of 17 Guangdong strains and 26 global reference strains. Ks rates and Ka rates of HA genes were 2.06 x 10(-3)-2.23 x 10(-3) Nt/Year and 1.05 x 10(-3)-1.21 x 10(3) Nt/Year during 2007-2010, while the velocity of HA1 evolution of Ka was 3. 13 times than that of HA2 evolution. Compared with HA of vaccine strain A/Perth/16/2009, the genetic homologies of Guangdong strains in 2009 reached to 98.8%-99.7% and of Guangdong strains in 2010 reached to 98.0%-98.4%. There were some amino acid substitutions in five epitope regions of HA1 during 2007-2010, especially in B region (N160K) and D region (K174R/N); the K189E/N/Q and T228A in RBS (receptor-binding site) occurred in 2010 as two glycoproteins sites substituted impacted on the HA1 antigenicity. The antigenicity of epidemic H3N2 strains in 2010 was to some degree different that of the vaccine strain A/ Perth/16/2009. According to that there were variations of B and D epitopes and two sites of RBS and two glycoprotein in Guangdong H3N2 HA1 genes, WHO/ CDC should recommend new representative strains during 2011-2012 influenza seasons if H3N2 HA genes further evolve in the near future.

BACKGROUNDGreat advances have been made in the diagnosis, molecular pathogenesis and treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in the past decade. Due to the lack of large population-based studies, the recent trends in the incidence and geographic variations of ALL in Shanghai, China have not been well documented. To better understand the incidence and epidemiological features of ALL in Shanghai, we conducted a retrospective survey based on the database from the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the medical records in all large-scale hospitals in Shanghai, especially those 30 major hospitals with hematology department.
METHODSAccording to the data from Shanghai CDC, 544 patients, with a median age of 32 years (ranging 1.2 - 89 years), were diagnosed as de novo ALL from January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2006, and they were followed up until December 31, 2007.
RESULTSThe average annual incidence of ALL in Shanghai was 0.81/100 000. The incidence in men (0.86/100 000) was slightly higher than that in women (0.75/100 000). The age-stratified incidence showed that the incidence was 2.31/100 000 in patients ≥ 17 years old, 0.54/100 000 in those 18 - 34 years old, 0.46/100 000 in those 35 - 59 years old, and 0.94/100 000 in those ≥ 60 years old. Moreover, there were substantial geographic variations in the incidence of ALL, with the incidence in Chongming county, an island in the east of Shanghai city being 0.60/100 000, much lower than those of other districts. Both French-American-British (FAB) and World Health Organization (WHO) classification systems were applied in the present study. Eighty-eight patients were diagnosed as L1 (26.2%), 193 L2 (57.4%), and 55 L3 (16.4%). For 302 patients with immunophenotypic results, 242 were identified as B cell origin (80.1%), 59 as T cell origin (19.5%), and 1 as biphenotype (0.4%). The leukemia cells in 61 patients co-expressed one or two myeloid antigen (20.2%). For 269 patients with cytogenetic results, the incidences of t(9;22) in patients aged < 10, 11 - 17, 18 - 44, 45 - 59 and ≥ 60 years old were 4.2%, 11.4%, 19.2%, 23.1% and 5.3%, respectively.
CONCLUSIONCompared with the previous data, the incidence of ALL is increased in Shanghai, and has a geographic distribution characteristic.

Objective:
To investigate the clinical characteristics, treatment and prognosis of relapsed demyeli-nating disease (RDD) associated with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibodies (MOG abs) children in southern China.
Methods:
Children with RDD associated with MOG abs at Department of Neurology in Guangzhou Women and Children′s Medical Center from January 2015 to December 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. The annualized relapse rates (ARRs) and expand disability status scale (EDSS) were used to assess the recurrence frequency and neurological dysfunction respectively.
Results:
Ten children were included with the age of (6.4±3.6) years old, and male to female ratio was 4∶6.(1)Clinical phenotype: all children had 24 episodes during follow-up, with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM)(7/10 cases) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD)(3/10 cases) on the first episode.Among 14 recurrent episodes, ADEM (9/14 times) was the most common, followed by optic neuritis(ON)(3/14 times)and brainstem encephalitis (2/14 times). By the final follow-up, the final diagnosis was multiphasic disseminated encephalomyelitis(MDEM)(6/10 cases), NMOSD(3/10 cases), ADEM-ON(1/10 case), respectively.(2)Laboratory examination: all the children had positive serum MOG abs in the acute stage. The serum MOG abs titer high group(≥1∶640)(6 cases)on the first episode complicated ON (3 cases) and long segment myelitis (3 cases) more common than those of low group(1∶320)(4 cases). (3)Imaging changes: 25 times of bain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were performed in the acute stage, MRI changes mostly involved the cortex and subcortical white matter.Four cases had abnormal spinal cord MRI.(4)Treatment and prognosis: intravenous methylprednone (IVMP) combined with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) were administrated in acute stage.Rituximab (2/10 cases), mycophenolate mofetil (4/10 cases), IVIG (2/10 cases) monthly and low dose prednisone orally (2/10 cases) were given respectively in maintains stage.ARRs decreased from 1.4 to 0 and EDSS score improved significantly after these treatments above.Seven cases had residual neurological dysfunction with 3 cases of NMOSD, 3 cases of MDEM and 1 case of ADEM-ON, including motor dysfunction, learning disability and inattention, symptomatic epilepsy and visual impairment.
Conclusions
ADEM is the most common form of RDD associated with MOG abs in children. Those with high serum MOG abs titer on the first episode are prone to have ON or long segment myelitis.Immunomodification therapy is effective in the relapsed patients, residual neurological sequelae were related to the type of repeated demyelination.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the actual condition of the sexual physiological and psychological development of the high school students in Yibin in order to get a reliable basis for sexual education of the teenagers.
METHODSWith a proportion of 1% to the whole, 2,770 students were randomly selected from eight high schools in the urban and rural areas of the city. We devised a questionnaire and asked each student to fill in his or her answers presently.
RESULTSSo far as sexual physiological and psychological development was concerned, the high school students of Yibin were found rather precocious, with very little sexual knowledge and psychological endurance in sexual affairs and a relative lack of sexual education.
CONCLUSIONIt is imperative to extend the scope of puberty sexual education in high schools. Teenagers must be taught different kinds of sexual knowledge at different periods of growth as well as how to avoid sexually transmitted diseases and gestation. The sexual knowledge level of the teachers must also be raised. It is a must to establish service or specialist consultation hot lines about sexual knowledge for teenagers. Parents are expected to change their traditional views and assume an active role in the joint efforts of sexual education for their children.

OBJECTIVETo analyse the epidemiological data of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in Shanghai.
METHODSALL cases in Shanghai from 2002 to 2006 were retrospectively investigated.
RESULTSAll together there were 544 newly diagnozed ALL cases. The yearly incidence of ALL was 0.81/10(5), which was slightly higher in men (0.86/10(5)) than in women (0.75/10(5)). The age-stratified incidence showed 2.31/10(5) in patients (pts) = 17y, 0.54/10(5) in 18 - 34 y, 0.46/10(5) in 35 - 59 y, and 0.94/10(5) in pts > 60 y. The incidences in Chongming County was 0.60/10(5), being the lowest in all districts. The morphological types of ALL was L(1) (26.2%), L(2) (57.4%) and L(3) (16.4%); the immunophenotype was B (80.1%) and T (19.5%). The incidence of ALL with myeloid antigen expression was 20.2%. Genetic examination revealed that chromosome aberration of t(9;22) was the most common one.
CONCLUSIONSThe incidence of ALL in Shanghai is 0.81/10(5). Compared with the national standard (1986 - 1998), the incidence in adolescents is obviously increased. Chongming County has the lowest incidence, indicating a role of environment factor in ALL incidence.

Objective:To explore the protective effect and the mechanism of Danggui Shaoyaosan(DSS) on angiotensin Ⅱ (AngⅡ)/transient receptor potential cation channel 6 (TRPC6) pathway in nephrotic syndrome (NS) rats. Method:In animal experiments, doxorubicin (4 mg·kg-1 for the 1st week and 2 mg·kg-1 for the 2nd week) was injected twice to the tail vein of rats to induce NS model in 160 rats, which were then randomly divided into model group (normal saline), losartan group (30 mg·kg-1·d-1), and low-(4.3 g·kg-1·d-1), medium-(8.6 g·kg-1·d-1), and high-dose (17.2 g·kg-1·d-1) DSS groups. Besides, a normal group was also set. After intervention for four weeks, ultrastructure changes of the kidney were identified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The 24-hour urine protein was detected by kits. Radioimmunoassay was used to detect the content of AngⅡ and Calcineurin (CaN) in plasma. Western blot was used to detect the protein expression of TRPC6, angiotensin Ⅱ type 1 receptor (AT1R), podocyte slit diaphragm-specific protein (Nephrin), and cysteine-aspartic acid protease-3 (Caspase-3) in the renal cortex. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of TRPC6 and AT1R in the slit diaphragm. In cell experiments, AngⅡ stimulated MPC5 podocytes. The cells were randomly divided into a normal group, an AngⅡ group, an AngⅡ+SAR7334 (TRPC6-specific inhibitor) group, an AngⅡ+5%DSS group, an AngⅡ+10%DSS group, and an AngⅡ+15%DSS group. Western blot was used to detect the protein expression of TRPC6, AT1R, Nephrin, and Caspase-3 in podocytes. Result:Compared with the normal group, the model group showed increased 24-hour urine protein content (
