Abstract?AIM:To compare the loss of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer ( RNFL ) thickness measurements by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography ( SD -OCT ) in healthy individuals and glaucoma patients with or without progression.? METHODS: A total of 60 eyes, comprising 36 glaucomatous eyes with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and 24 healthy controls, were included in the study over a 2-year period.All eyes underwent at least 4 serial RNFL measurements performed by Cirrus OCT every half a year over a period of 2a.Visual field ( VF) testing was performed by using the Swedish interactive threshold algorithm( SITA) Standard 30-2 program of the Humphrey field analyzer within the same week as the optic disc/RNFL photography. By masked comparative analysis of VF test results and optic disc/RNFL photographs, the eyes were classified into non -progressive and progressive glaucoma cases. Longitudinal loss of RNFL thickness was compared.?RESULTS: The mean follow-up time was 2.1 ±0.3a. Seventeen from 36 subjects were identified as progressors. Mean rates of change in average RNFL thickness were significantly higher for progressors compared with nonprogressors (2.46μm/a vs.1.21μm/a;P <0.001 ). Inferior quadrant RNFL thickness were significantly correlated with MD reduction in glaucoma eyes with progression(r=0.423, P=0.03).? CONCLUSION: Longitudinal measurements of RNFL thickness using SD-OCT show a pronounced reduction in patients with progression compared with patients without progression.Inferior RNFL thickness parameters might be more important in discriminating eyes with progressive glaucomatous optic nerve damage.

Objective To compare the clinical features of space infections in the oral maxillofacial region between patients with diabetes mellitus and patients without diabetes.Methods A retrospective study was conducted on 61 patients diagnosed with space infections in the oral maxillofacial region and receiving treatment at the department of oral and The 4nd Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University between 2013 and 2016.The patients were divided into 2 groups:diabetic group (n =28) and non-diabetic group (n =33).The study variables were demography,etiology,clinical and laboratory examinations (bacteriology,admission blood glucose level,admission white blood cell count and percent of neutrophil on admission).The outcome was compared.The length of hospital stay and complications were also compared.Statistical analyses of the results between groups were performed using the t test and chi square test.Results For oral and maxillofacial space infection,there was no statistically significant difference in gender between the diabetic group and (28 cases) and non diabetes group (33 cases) (x 2 test,P=0.5929);while there were statistically significant differences between two groups in age (t test,P＜0.001) and in the number of infection space (t test,P＜0.001);there was no significant difference between the two groups in the sources of infection (x 2,P＞0.05);The main source of infection was odontogenic,followed by adenogenous.There were statistically significant differences between two groups in blood glucose concentration at admission (t test,P＜0.001) and in the hospitalization time and complications (t test and x 2 test P＜0.05),while no statistically significant differences in the white blood cells count and neutrophil count (t test,P＞0.05).Compared with the non diabetic group,for patients in the diabetic group,the age of onset was older,the involvd gaps were more,the blood glucose concentration was higher on admission,the length of stay was longer,complications were more likely to occur,and the consequences were more serious.Conclusion Compared with non diabetes group,space infection in oral and maxillofacial region is more serious and the hospital stay is longer and has more complications in diabetic patients which should be paid higher attention to.

Objective To observe the effects of intravitreal injection of conbercept for aggressive posterior retinopathy of prematurity (AP-ROP).Methods It is a retrospective case study.Twenty-one patients (40 eyes) with AP-ROP were enrolled in this study.There were 9 males (18 eyes) and 12 females (22 eyes),with the mean gestational age of (28.30±1.79) weeks and the mean birth weight of (1 021.40±316.70) g.All the lesions of 40 eyes were located in posterior zone,with 24 eyes in zone Ⅰ and 16 eyes in zone Ⅱ.All the eyes were treated with intravitreal injection of conbercept 0.025 ml (0.25 mg).During follow-up,nonresponders or patients with deterioration were retreated with intravitreal injection of conbercept or photocoagulation;patients with progressive deterioration to stage 4 had received vitrectomy.At the 1,2,4,8,12,16,20,24 weeks after treatments,the disappearance or decrease of retinal vessel tortuosity and neovascularization,and the growth of the normal retinal vessels toward the peripheral retina were evaluated.Results Thirty-six eyes were cured for only one injection,the cured rate was 90.00％.However,2 eyes (5.00％) had progressed to stage 4 with contractive retinal detachment,which underwent vitrectomy.Two eyes (5.00％) had received twice injections,whose remaining avascular zone area treated by photocoagulation.No major systemic or ocular complications after injection appeared.All lens remained transparent and no iatrogenic retinal hole was occurred during the follow-up.Conclusion Intravitreal injection ofconbercept is effective in the treatment of AP-ROP.

Objective: To study the effects of psychological variables on orthodontic compliance of adolescents.Methods:Prior to orthodontic treatment,60 adolescent patients received two questionnaires for the analysis of their personality(EPQ) and self-consciousness.The compliance of the patients was evaluated at each visit and 6 months after the beginning of treatment by orthodontists.Results:The outgoing personality and the high self-consciousness significantly predicted good orthodontic compliance of the adolescent patients in the treatment(P

Objective To investigate the relationships between the expressions of intercellular adhesion molecule 1(ICAM-1),heat shock protein 70(HSP70) and acute rejection after pancreas allotransplantation in miniature swine.Methods Ultrasound guided biopsies of the pancreas and histopathologic examination were performed after the miniature swine models of pancreas allotransplantation were established.According to the histological change,the samples were divided into group Ⅰ(no rejection),group Ⅱ(mild acute rejection),group Ⅲ(moderate acute rejection)and group Ⅳ(serious acute rejection).The expressions of ICAM-1 and HSP70 were analyzed with immunohistochemistry and imaging.Results The expressions of ICAM-1 and HSP70 were increased when acute rejection occurred after pancreas allotransplantation in miniature swine.The levels of ICAM-1 and HSP70 were sequentially high when acute rejection was serious.Conclusion ICAM-1 and HSP70 were involved in pancreas allograft rejection and useful for early diagnosis of acute rejection after pancreas transplantation.

Objective To establish a successful model for pancreaticoduodenal allotransplantation with enteric drainage in piglet and surveillance acute rejection by biopsy.Methods We implemented the model same as protocol of clinical pancrease transplantation.40 piglets were divided into donors and recipients randomly.20 times experimental operation were finished. The total pancreas with a short segment of duodenum was transplanted to a recipient by anastomoses of vessels to the recipient iliac vessels and small bowel segment to the jejunum with enteric drainage. During operation, mean arterial pressure(MAP), central venous pressure(CVP)were monitored. The levels of amylase activity in blood were investigated.Doppler color blood flow ultrasonography was used to evaluate blood flow of pancreatic allografts,and ultrasound-guided percutaneous pancreas allograft biopsy and histopathologic examination were performed.Results The successful rate of operation was 90%. Recipient's MAP was decreased after the reopening of inosculated blood vessels.(P

Limb-shaking transient ischemic attack (TIA), a rare manifestation, is commonly caused by severe stenosis or occlusion of an extracranial internal carotid artery. Such patients are usually treated with surgical revascularization or anti-platelet therapy. We present a 56-year-old woman with 6 months’ episodic attacks starting with mouth skewed to the right and a sensation of ‘weakness’ involving predominantly her left arm, and at times, also involved the left leg. This was immediately followed by rhythmic jerky movements of the left arm and at times, also involved the left leg. Magnetic resonance angiography revealed severe stenosis of M1 segment of the right middle cerebral artery. The patient’s symptoms were signifi cantly improved by treatment with anti-platelet drugs and nimodipine.
