OBJECTIVETo study the effect of hepatic artery embolization on the microwave coagulated area, an in vivo animal experiment.
METHODSTwenty-four suitable hepatic lobes of ten dogs were divided into two groups: microwave coagulation alone 12 lobes (control group) and hepatic artery occlusion with iodized oil and gelatin sponge particles followed by microwave coagulation 12 (experiment group). Microwave coagulation was delivered with an output of 50 W for 300 or 400 seconds with thermal needles introduced parallel to and 5 approximately 20 mm from the puncture needle. After sacrifice of the dogs, their hepatic lobes were sectioned along the puncture line. Then, the appearance and size of the coagulated area were recorded. The tissue specimens were fixed in formalin for light microscopic evaluation.
RESULTSA decline in temperature gradient was detected from the center to the periphery of the affected tissue after the application of microwave coagulation, which was sharper in the control group than in the experimental group. Single polar microwave coagulation at 50 W for 300 seconds produced a necrotic volume of 25 approximately 33 mm in longitudinal diameter and 13 approximately 22 mm in transverse diameter in control group, 33 approximately 44 mm and 24 approximately 32 mm in the experimental group. The coagulation area was slightly bigger when the duration of coagulation was 400 seconds than 300 seconds, without significant difference.
CONCLUSIONHepatic artery occlusion, inhibiting the heat loss caused by hepatic arterial blood flow, is able to significantly enlarge the necrotic volume of microwave coagulation.

OBJECTIVETo investigate how network education can improve college students' knowledge on sexual and reproductive health in Ningbo city.
METHODSFrom December 2012 to June 2013, we conducted a questionnaire investigation among college students in Ningbo city about the effects of network education on their knowledge about sexual psychology, sexual physiology, sexual ethics, and reproductive health.
RESULTSA total of 7 362 college students accomplished the investigation, of whom 2 483 (42.1% males and 57.9% females) received network education, while the other 4 879 (24.1% males and 75.9% females) did not. Approximately 47.1% of the male and 28.0% of the female students acquired sexual and reproductive knowledge via network education. Reproductive health-related network education significantly enriched the students' knowledge about the reproductive system and sex, pubertal development, sexual physiology, conception and embryonic development, methods of contraception, sexual psychology, sexually transmitted diseases and their prevention, pregnancy care and eugenics, and environment- and occupation-related reproductive health (P < 0.01). It also remarkably improved their cognitive attitude towards reproductive health knowledge (P < 0.01). Those who received reproductive health-related network education showed a significantly higher rate of masturbation (P < 0.01) but markedly later time of the first masturbation (P < 0.01) than those who did not.
CONCLUSIONNetwork education can enhance the effect of reproductive health education among college students and improve their sexual experience and health.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the change of nerve growth factor (NGF) mRNA in human detrusor in bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and their implication.
METHODSEight cases of bladder cancer and 40 patients with BPH were included in this study. All patients were divided into three groups, a control group, an obstructive detrusor stability group and an obstructive detrusor instability group. NGF mRNA in detrusor from all patients was measured using a RT-PCR.
RESULTSThe RT-PCR study indicated that NGF mRNA was expressed in detrusor of three groups of patients. There were significant differences among the three groups (P < 0.01). The expression of NGF mRNA in the obstructive instability group was higher than that in the obstructive stability group and in the control group. The NGF mRNA level in the obstructive stability group was higher than that in the control group.
CONCLUSIONThe expression of NGF mRNA in detrusor was elevated in BOO with BPH. The elevated expression of NGF mRNA might be correlated with detrusor instability (DI) due to BOO.

AIMThe observation of the relationship between the level of NO detected by ESR in the blood and the myocardial apoptosis and function caused by the recurrent, reversible myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury.
METHODSFifteen New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into three groups (n = 5): (1) control group, (2) L-Arg group, (3) L-NNA group. The rabbits were anesthetized with intravenous pentobarbital. A suture ligature was passed around the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD), so it could be snare occluded and reperfused. The LAD was occluded for 10 min three times, the first and second occlusions were followed by 10 min of reflow, after the third occlusion, the reperfusion was 120 min.
RESULTSIn all groups dp/dt(max) began to decrease at 5 min after the first ischemia. But compared with control group at 5 min after first reperfusion: in L-Arg group NO and apoptosis level were elevated but dp/dt(max) decreased significantly. In L-NNA group NO and apoptosis decreased significantly, dp/dt(max) improved significantly.
CONCLUSIONThe fact that the level of NO and apoptosis elevated suggested that they had taken part in the process of myocardial stunning.

OBJECTIVETo study digitized virtual hepatic three-dimensional reconstruction and virtual hepatic surgery.
METHODSThe whole series of hepatic images taken from the database of digitized Virtual Chinese Human Female Number 1 (VCH-F1) was employed to reconstruct a three-dimensional (3D) liver. First, studied some algorithms for registration of human liver tissue images, and then, segmented the regions of liver, vein, bile duct, and gallbladder from the images. Based on them, the 3D visualization human liver model was reconstructed. Finally, a 3D visualization demo system of liver was developed based on personal computer and Windows operation system.
RESULTSThis demo system of liver provided a graphics user interface to rotate, scale the 3D liver to observe the 3D hepatic structure, and a virtual liver simulation system of resection with primary function.
CONCLUSIONSThe study may be beneficial to the future research on digitized virtual hepatic and virtual hepatic surgery, and the 3D visualization demo system of liver may be beneficial to the research on the hepatic structure.
