Objective To know the relationship between air quality and meteorological conditions in Sanming City,Fujian, China.Methods Based on the fixed point monitoring data of everyday air quality from Sanming Environmental Monitoring Center and the corresponding upper air synoptic chart from 2002 to 2006,the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics,the variation tendency of the ambient air quality and their relations with the meteorological conditions were analyzed by using Excel 2003 software.Results The air pollution in Sanming was serious,the PM10 was concluded as the predominant pollutant.The concentration of SO_2,NO_2 and PM10,which affected the air quality of Sanming,was higher during October—April,and it was lower during May—September.The concentration of the pollutants was higher in the urban areas eompared with the suburbs. Conclusion The air quality in Sanming is related to the variation of the synoptic system.The air quality under the warm shear line system is best and under low system is next-best;the air quality under the warm sector convergence system is worst and under continent high system is next-worst;the low-level wind direction has some effect on the variation of the air quality,the air quality in easterly wind is better than that in westerly wind.

OBJECTIVETo search for a method for increasing clinical therapeutic effect of acute large area cerebral infarction.

METHODSNinety-six cases were randomly divided into a comprehensive treatment group and a western medicine group, 48 cases in each group. The western medicine group were treated with routine western methods, dehydration for decreasing intracranial pressure, brain-protection, anti-platelet agglutination, improving circulation and expectant treatment, etc.; the comprehensive treatment group were treated with the routine treatment of western medicine combined with acupuncture, moxibustion and enema of Chinese drugs. The therapeutic effect was observed after treatment for 28 days.

RESULTSThe total effective rate was 68.8% in the comprehensive treatment group and 39.6% in the western medicine group with a very significant difference between the two groups (P < 0.01), and the score of the National Institute of Health's Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and the score of the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) in the comprehensive treatment group were better than those in the western medicine group (P < 0.001, P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONCombined treatment of Chinese medicine and western medicine for large area cerebral infarction is better than simple western medicine, and it can significantly improve neurological defect of the patient and decrease death rate.

Objective To investigate the expression and significance of Caspase-3 and Survivin at different stages of human hemangioma in children.Methods Fifty-five specimens of hemangioma tissue excised in operation and 8 normal skins removed in operation were harvested from People's Hospital of Gansu Province between Jan.2000 and Dec.2005.The pathologic diagnosis was divided into 3 groups according to Mulliken's standard under microscope:proliferated phase group(n=31),degenerated phase group(n=24),and control group(n=8).All these specimens were examined by immunohisto for Caspase-3 and Survivin expression.Results Caspase-3 positive rate in the proliferative phase and involuting phase were 35.5% and 79.2%,respectively.The positive rate in involuting phase was higher than that that in proliferative phase,the difference between the 2 groups was significant(P=0.045 9).A significant difference was not found between the proliferative phase and normal skin tissue(P=0.057 3).Survivin positive rate in the proliferating and involuting phase were 77.4% and 45.8%,respectively.The positive rate in proliferative phase was higher than that in involuting phase,the difference between the 2 groups was significant(P=0.008 5),the difference in involuting phase and normal skin tissue was not significant(P=0.059 3).Conclusions High level of Caspase-3 expression in vascular endothelial cells in involuting phase in contrast to that in proliferative phase,which indicates that Caspase-3 may play a positive role in the apoptosis of vascular endothelial cells.Survivin may inhibit the apoptosis of vascular endothelial cells in proliferative phase due to it's high expression.Caspase-3 and Surivivin involved in the hemangioma in the regulation of apoptosis.J Appl Clin Pediatr,2009,24(1):51-52

BACKGROUNDIt is generally accepted that gliomas are the most common primary brain tumors with poor prognosis. We aimed to explore the relationship of the immunity of the central nervous system and the genesis and development of glioma.

METHODSG422 glioma was implanted in the brain of BALB/c mice (immuno-competent mice), nude mice (T cell related immuno-deficient) and complement C3 knock-out mice (complement C3 related immunodeficient). The survival time of the host, growth and histopathology of the tumor, and concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interferon-γ (INF-γ) in tumor tissues were assessed.

RESULTSTumor spheres were formed in all mice after injection, and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) positive staining of the cells declared their glioma origin. The longest median survival time of (44.3 ± 6.0) days was found in BALB/c mice, followed by (24.8 ± 5.2) days in nude mice and the shortest (18.6 ± 5.8) days in complement C3 knock-out mice. Accordingly, the growth of the tumor was fastest in complement C3 knock-out mice, followed by the nude mice and slowest in the BALB/c mice. Although the proportions of infiltrating CD68(+) lymphocytes in tumor tissues showed no significant difference (P > 0.05), TNF-α level in the nude and C3 knock-out mice, (28.11 ± 4.86) µmol/L and (22.87 ± 6.36) µmol/L respectively, were significantly lower (P < 0.01) than that in the BALB/c mice, which was (230.21 ± 39.17) µmol/L. The INF-γ level was highest in the BALB/c mice ((180.76 ± 29.19) µmol/L), followed by the nude mice ((113.46 ± 23.76) µmol/L) and then the C3 knock-out mice ((16.84 ± 4.45) µmol/L).

CONCLUSIONSThe G422 glioma implanted in the brains of mice with different immune ability would be a useful model for studying the relationship of the immune system and tumor in the central nervous system. Furthermore, the T cells and complement C3 compartments of the immune response may affect the growth of implanted tumors and inflammatory factors such as TNF-α and INF-γ.

OBJECTIVETo observe the effect of SHENG MAI ZHUSHEYE on the movement parameters and viability of human sperm in vitro.

METHODSWe collected sperm samples from 33 normal fertile men, divided each into two, and cultured them in vitro with SHENG MAI ZHUSHEYE + Hams-F10 and Hams-F10 alone, respectively. Then we measured the straight line velocity (VSL), curvilinear velocity (VCL), average path velocity (VAP) and the amplitude of lateral head displacement (ALH) of the sperm by computer-aided semen analysis at 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 12 h. And the sperm viability was detected.

RESULTSVCL was significantly higher at 8 h (P < 0.05) and very significantly higher at 12 h (P < 0.01) in the SHENG MAI ZHUSHEYE + Hams-F10 group than in the Hams-F10 group. VSL, VAP and ALH were significantly increased in the former group at 4, 8 and 12 h as compared with the latter (P < 0.05). The sperm viability was significantly decreased in the Hams-F10 group at 12 h (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONSHENG MAI ZHUSHEYE can improve sperm movement parameters and increase sperm viability in vitro.

OBJECTIVETo study the inter-population and inter-individual effect of education attainment on men's behavior of smoking in China.

METHODA cross-sectional study of 7,415 men, aged 35-59 years, from 15 population samples was carried out in 1998. Information on education attainment and smoking was collected by standardized questionnaires. The population samples were divided into 2 groups according to the proportion of men with college or above education attainment: group I had an average 25.8% of men with college or above education attainment, and group II had an average 2.0% of men with college or above education attainment.

RESULTS(1) In group I, the percent of ever smokers, current smokers, deeper smoker, and ever smokers with cessation due to disease and the average number of cigarettes per day for the smokers were significantly lower than in group II (66.2%, 56.4%, 34.4%, 47.8%, 17.2 cigarettes/day vs 75.8%, 64.4%, 40.3%, 58.4%, 20.4 cigarettes/day, respectively). (2) The percent of current smokers and the number of cigarettes decreased with increased education attainment in both groups. Taking the men with college or above education attainment in group I as reference, the odd ratio of smoking for those with high school education in group I was 1.8 (95% CI: 1.5-2.1), for those with middle school or lower education in group I was 2.0(95% CI: 1.7-2.5), for those with college or above education in group II was 1.4(95% CI: 0.9-2.1), for those with high school education in group II was 1.7(95% CI: 1.4-2.1), and for those with middle school or lower education in group II was 2.4 (95% CI: 2.1-2.8).

CONCLUSIONSmoking behavior was affected by both individual education attainment and population education level. Smoking cessation measures should be focused on the development of better anti-smoking environment, such as education development, health promotion, etc.
