Objective To observe the effects of acute stress on reproductive- endocrine function in female adult rats. Methods Acute immobilization stress was used to challenge the female adult rats and then the serum levels of progesterone (P), estradiol (E2) and corticosterone were measured 2 h after the stress. Results Acute stress significantly reduced E2 levels in each period of sexual cycle and increased the levels of P and corticosterone in the stressed rats.In addition, the ratio of estradiol and progesterone was disordered in stressed rats. Conclusion Acute stress can cause the disorder of estradiol and progesterone.Since stress is a major factor contributing to reproductive- endocrine disorder, this model will be useful for the research and development of drugs for reproductive- endocrine disorder.

Objective To observe the effects of repeated immobilization on rats ovarian function and to observe the changes of ovarian function in menopause animals. Methods Daily vaginal smears were permfored to follow the estrous cycle in adult female rats. The animals with regular cycle were exposed to the scheduled daily repeated immobilization for 15-day,which included 5 stress episodes with each episode consisting of three immobilizations (one time per day). The duration of immobilization was progressively increased with the subsequent episode. Serum levels of estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P) were measured throughout the estrous cycle before and after the stress. Results The repeated stress resulted in the disruption of the estrous cycle characterized by longer phase of diestrus or by fewer epithelium from vagina in proestrus and estrus. In the stressed rats, a significant decrease of serum E2 and an increase of P were shown throughout the cycle compared to that before stress;the normal secretion cycle was interrupted or even disappeared; changes of serum P level in some rats were similar to the menopause animals. Conclusion Repeated immobilization can cause the disruption or degeneration of ovarian function, indicating that rats with stress-induced ovarian dysfunction is an appropriate animal model for testing protective effects of agents against aging and for the diseases related to ovarian dysfunction.

The dry seeds of Cassia obtusifolia were carried by the "ShenZhou 8" satellite and sowed after landing. Based on our pri- or study on SP1, the characteristics of plants growth, physiological index and content of effective components were examined. The results showed that the QC10, QC29 strains matured 5 d earlier compared with control. The plant height, across diameter and ground diameter of QC10, QC29, QC46 strains was superior to the control at whole growth period. The branch number increased ranging from 4 to 11 and the number of pods reached 321, 313,281, respectively, which was dramatically higher than the control (246). The yield of QC10, QC29, QC46 strains increased noticeably from 31.4 to 63.2 g. The 1000-seed-weight of QC10, QC29, QC46 strains was 25.86, 25.88, 24.06 g, while the control was 23.69 g. Compared to the control, the mass fraction of chlorophyll was enhanced 1.098, 1.016, 0.297 mg. There was no significant difference in aurantio-obtusin and chrysophanol content of seeds. Through two years research, three high-yield mutant strains were obtained. This study indicates that spaceflight-induced mutants could provide new germplasm for C. obtusifolia breeding and offers the theoretical basis for further utilization of spaceflight-induced mutation to breed high-quality C. obtusifolia strains.

Acta Academiae Medicinae Sinicae 2002;24(1):59-62
OBJECTIVEAimed at illustrating the means of early diagnosis for prevention of the impairment of kidney function, the results of conservative medical therapy and the surgical treatment in patients with endometriosis of urinary tract.
METHODSSurgical interventions were done in 5 cases with pathological of endometriosis. Ureters were involved by endometriotic lesion in 3 patients, ureters and bladder in one and urethra in another patient. All of the cases were shown at least partial obstruction of the urinary tract by clinical symptoms, diagnostic examinations and the outcomes of various kinds of treatment.
RESULTSHydropnephrosis and hydroureter were shown by ultrasonography, IVP or retrograde pyelography in one case of ureteral obstruction. A small lump of endometriotic foci along the urethra was detected by manual examination and ultra-sonography in one patient. The relieving of the symptoms and signs of the obstruction of the urinary tract in two cases by GnRH-a or progest in was the evidence of the endometriotic lesion. There were two patients underwent surgical resection of the endometriotic foci surrounding the ureter after medical therapy.
CONCLUSIONSUrinary tract endometriosis are rarely seen and usually escape the attention of the physicians, while they usually cause obstruction of the urinary tract and finally impairment of kidney function if not treated in time. This kind of disease can be easily diagnosed by imaging detection with ultra-sonography, IVP or retrograde pyelography. Conservative treatment with GnRH-a and long acting progesterone as well as surgical treatments are effective for this kind of disease.
